Sony announced today that the Playstation Home Open Beta has been pushed back until Fall ‘08 and the Closed Beta will be “expanded” both in length and number of testers. This announcement seems to have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way as if there is somehow this technological Utopia they’re being told they can’t enter yet. Sony (ie. “the man”) is somehow keeping them down. It seems like some of you think this is somehow cruel and unusual punishment. You know what? Suck it up guys.

My efforts to pin down an exact source for this have met with little success, but it’s worth noting that many PS3 forums are alive with persons who claim to have received an email invitation to participate in the OPEN beta for Playstation Home on the PS3. This final phase of the roll out for this highly-anticipated Second Life-ish time suck is reported to be set for April 18th. (more…)

Today’s rant has to do with the constant (and glaring) misconceptions surrounding the upcoming Playstation Home service.  Let me get this out of the way right now, I’m in the Playstation Home beta, but nothing I’m going to discuss in the course of this rant will be derived from any experiences I have (or haven’t) had during said beta; I don’t want to displease the NDA-Gods.

Let me start this out with a simple statement that hopefully the most hard-core Xbox 360 fanboy can understand.  Playstation Home is NOT a counter to Xbox Live.  I posted a while back in one of my rants how I suspected people intentionally emphasize things about another platform that may or may not be true in order to steal (or ruin) their thunder when the truth is known.  This is one of those instances. Home, it’s where the heart is. It’s also where Sony is pinning their hope for at least online equality, if not dominance over Xbox Live at some point. The poor showing of their Home beta has caused Sony to push the October release date to spring of 2008. What is going on?

Gamasutra has recently reported that Sony has yet to fill the position of “Home Content Producer.” What is the person in this position responsible for?

1. Developing content strategies for Home to achieve Home business objectives. (not important!)
2. Coordinate development efforts of Home content.(Making sure the vending machine in the break room is stocked has a higher priority!)
3. Act as a liaison between first and third party game publishers/advertisers and external developers of Home content. (Totally unnecessary.)
4. Analyze community response to content and iterate strategies accordingly. (Who cares what those guys want?)

Did they think that they could proceed without someone in what seems like a vital role? Well, this IS Sony. They must think that the position is soooo “Last Gen!”Oh, if you feel that you are qualified you can apply here. Go there, make it work, and give the Sony disciples something to testify about. Maybe I should apply, I’ve got some free time.

Surely there were other reasons that slowed the Home project? Maybe they are all playing Halo 3?
