Sony announced today that the Playstation Home Open Beta has been pushed back until Fall ‘08 and the Closed Beta will be “expanded” both in length and number of testers. This announcement seems to have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way as if there is somehow this technological Utopia they’re being told they can’t enter yet. Sony (ie. “the man”) is somehow keeping them down. It seems like some of you think this is somehow cruel and unusual punishment. You know what? Suck it up guys.

It’s no surprise to anyone that actually owns a PS3 that the Playstation Store needed “something” done to it. It wasn’t efficient, and didn’t seem very “fancy” compared to other aspects of the system and experience (hold your PSN jokes, Xbots!) We now have the new Playstation Store on our PS3s and despite some initial issues that are sure to be worked out, I have to hand it to whoever is responsible… Thank You! You’ve made just about everything I can think of about the store better. Don’t stop working because it’s still not perfect, but you do deserve praise for what you’ve done so far.

Sony’s announced they’re updating the Playstation Store and it’s about time to tell you the truth. It’s been functional, but it’s always left a lot to be desired. In their third generation of home consoles though, I would expect that when asked why they’re freezing updates for two weeks that they could come up with better words to describe the current state of things than “texty”. That’s not even a real word, is it?

My efforts to pin down an exact source for this have met with little success, but it’s worth noting that many PS3 forums are alive with persons who claim to have received an email invitation to participate in the OPEN beta for Playstation Home on the PS3. This final phase of the roll out for this highly-anticipated Second Life-ish time suck is reported to be set for April 18th.
