Rothbart’s Rant - The Clear Cut Case for Qore

September 24th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Qore caused quite a backlash when it was announced… and then when it was released. People have a real problem separating Fact from FUD. Future Publishing announced today that they’re working on a second digital magazine to be distributed via Playstation Network, this time looking at a weekly format targeting the UK market. Future Publishing, behind Qore in the US, describes this new magazine as a “digital magazine” that “will include news, reviews, features and high definition video content.” That’s it; that’s the extent of their description of this new product. Already, in the Sarcastic Gamer forums, we’ve heard cries of anger and disgust over having to pay for demos/betas and having to wait so long after the US getting Qore that people are planning to boycott this simply due to the delay. Wow, over react much guys?!?! (more…)

SG-PSP Episode 20: The Lost Episode

September 18th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Even Hurricane Ike couldn’t stop us from putting out Episode 20 of the Sarcastic Gamer Playstation Podcast… is just contributed to its tardiness.  If it helps, just think of it as PacManPolarBear’s contribution to the episode… extra tardiness!  Okay, enough PMPB bashing before the episode even starts, in this episode we discussed:

  • Introductions (Frawlz announces with confidence this show will be released on time… Shyeah!)
  • Rothbart pulls a PacManPolarBear
  • Frawlz/Rothbart “bet” update
  • Extra Life Charity Event October 18th, and calling out Playstation Nation Podcast guys
  • Resistance Limerick Contest, for the love of God someone submit a Resistance limerick!!!
  • EyePet beat out Eight Days?!?!
  • Penny Arcade’s XBLA game making its way to PSN this year
  • Life with Playstation coming soon (okay, at the time of posting this show, it’s actually out…)
  • Frawlz is a Folding@home n00b…
  • Sony’s Yoshida proclaims LBP to be the biggest PS3 title of the year
  • PSN Cards coming to Blockbuster, 7-11, and RiteAid (at the time of posting this show, Blockbuster has $20 and $50 PSN cards, nation wide)
  • The Last Guy scored really well, Frawlz complains about a $10 game that can be beaten over a weekend.  Does a games rating directly relate to its price:length ratio?
  • Sony loses Singstar Exec Paulina Bozek as she leaves to go work with Phil Harrison at Atari
  • Singstar Country (if you don’t know what Faith Hill looks like, click here)
  • LittleBigPlanet billboards popping up
  • It’s Not a Roomah! Podcast Edition
  • Shoutouts
  • Ending

Do LAN features matter anymore?

September 8th, 2008 · 13 Comments

I’ve been chatting away to a couple of 360-owning friends lately (in case you’ve forgotten, which you probably have, I’m first and foremost a PS3 owner) and we got into a heated discussion about network features. Well, I said that I had nothing against the 360 and quite enjoyed playing Warhawk, and they said Halo 3 was better despite the two games being sorta different and because the latter featured Local Area Network features..which Warhawk does anyway.

However, they did quickly pounce on the fact that Gears of War had LAN features too, and outside of multiplatform releases I was stumped. So the question is, are LAN features really as necessary as my 360-owning chums make out, or are they just a nice afterthought that you wont use? Jump time.

Is Quest for Booty an indication of the future?

August 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

There is no way to escape it. Digital distribution, not the current disc-based system, is the future. Though opinions vary on how much longer discs will reign supreme, many in the industry seem to believe that the shift will happen within the next decade.

I have yet to fully embrace digital distribution. There is a Blu-ray copy of “Warhawk” resting in the dresser in my television room. I feel better knowing that I will always have a DRM-free copy of the game. However, it seems that even I am not immune to the power of digital distribution. (more…)

PixelJunk Eden: A Video Walkthrough

August 1st, 2008 · 5 Comments

I’m gonna admit I was pretty stumped at first as to what PixelJunk Eden was actually about. There were descriptions flying all over the place - “artsy schmaltz”, “a bit like Mario” but it wasn’t really until I played it that I began to understand what was going on. To help fellow PS3 owners (and those who’re just plain curious) I’ve used Eden’s YouTube upload feature to create a video walkthrough describing what’s actually going on. No terrible voicework though; YouTube’s annotations are dead handy for this sort of thing.

Hit the jump for the video! Sort of, anyway…

PixelJunk Eden Gives Hollywood Pair Déjà Vu

August 1st, 2008 · 3 Comments

Sony’s PSN lineup, which was arguably the most impressive part of its E3 media briefing, has come under fire in recent weeks. Last week, angry feminists used their right of free speech to lash out against the violent, yet adorable “Fat Princess.” In the wake of that controversy, it seems that yet another has sprouted legs. However, this time the battle won’t be waged through angry blog posts. No. This time, the afflicted party is looking to take Sony to court.

Hit the jump to get the details. (more…)

10 fun things to do in an online lobby that could get you arrested.

July 29th, 2008 · 11 Comments

Most online games have a lobby. Lobbies are essential to organizing teams, getting people on the right team and getting your gear ready. Upon entering a pre/post game lobby is there a certain type of decorum that people usually follow. Usually… Except, I’m not your usual type of guy.

Here’s somethings that you should do and some things you simply must do in a lobby and it’s not what you think.

Want to know more? Follow the jump.

Artsy-Fartsy PixelJunk Eden demo impressions

July 28th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Fresh from the American PlayStation Store comes a whole heap of fancy updates. As well as being treated to a sale dropping PAIN, PixelJunk Monsters and three other downloadable games to the low, low price of $4.99 each, Siren: Blood Curse makes it appearance, with Europe astonishingly receiving the game at the same time (but not the demo, meaning curious European gamers will have to spend at least 7 quid to find out what it’s like, thanks SCEE) as well as the almost typical Guitar Hero and Rock Band song packs. Also thrown in was a demo of Elefunk, which is rubbish, and PixelJunk Eden, the third game from the small Japanese development studio Q-Games.

Hit the jump for my Eden impressions.

Feminists ftw: Sony making changes to Fat Princess

July 25th, 2008 · 9 Comments

Some people seem to have nothing better to do than complain. Take for instance the recent feminist outcry over Sony’s “Fat Princess.” You know, that cute but yet incredibly violent PSN game that allows up to 32 players on two teams (16 each) to duke it out in an epic struggle to rescue a portly gal from the clutches of the opposing squad.

Well, rather than deal with a stampede of hundreds of angry, protesting women, Sony has decided to give “Fat Princess” a facelift.

Get all of the details after the jump. (more…)

Updated: Resistance 2 beta not exclusive to U.S.

July 24th, 2008 · 5 Comments

U.S. perspective by Havok Saunders.

How would you describe Sony’s Qore? Pointless? Unnecessary? A complete waste of money? Well, that might not be your view, but it is certainly my opinion of the service.

The Playstation Network’s monthly online gaming program is two episodes old and has yet to entice me to open my wallet. Game previews and developer interviews are great, but does Sony actually expect me to spend $24.99 on a year-long subscription (or $2.99 per episode) for content and information that can be found on numerous gaming websites for free?

No movies on PSN in Europe ’til 2009

July 17th, 2008 · 13 Comments

Kotaku’s got some unfortunate news that makes Sony’s position in Europe even weaker than it is now: the PlayStation Store’s video download area, just launched in America, is staying there until next year at the earliest.

Colour me SERIOUSLY pissed off. Hit the jump for more.
