PS3 Backwards Compatibility: Will it, won’t it?

PS3BC

There’s nothing I despise more than a company not being straight about a rumor that is nothing but good news for them. Price cuts are fine, since the companies don’t want people waiting to buy a system, but software updates? They should be straight with us about that from the get-go.

GOW Compilation Banner

Hoping to dethrone tubed toothpaste as the best idea ever, Sony has announced that it is preparing  a God of War Blu-ray compilation for a holiday 2009 release. This news follows an April God of War III Collector’s Edition survey, where fans were teased with goodies including a graphic novel, an art book and a Kratos figurine. May Liam Neeson have mercy on those who put a priority on the keychain or the necklace.

“P.S. Thanks” could be Sony’s Club Nintendo; hopefully with worthwhile rewards

I can honestly say that this is the first U.S. Patent Office application that has ever given me an erection. The PSP-controlled car was a neat idea, but the thought of a possible PlayStation rewards program is sexier than a shaved bison bathing in a vat of macaroni and cheese. I assure you, that’s pretty damn sexy. (more…)

The best of Ratchet’s arsenal so far

July 6th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Ratchet Weapon Countdown Banner

With the release of A Crack in Time looming on the horizon, I thought that I would take the opportunity to delve into the Ratchet & Clank lore, and highlight my favorite weapons from the galactic duo’s locker. Insomniac Games has created a slew of absurd “toys” over the years, so this was definitely a tough list to compile. I was able to narrow the field to five, but only after some ferocious debating in front of my mirror. Next time I will probably just pull some slips of paper out of a hat.

Since this article is merely a reflection of my opinion, there are sure to be dissenters. That is perfectly fine. I only ask that insults be kept to a minimum. My ego is rather delicate, and I don’t take criticism well. Last night, I sobbed for over an hour after a malevolent mallard ridiculed my haircut. Yep, that actually happened.

As you read, keep in mind that I put a priority on novelty. As an example, the Devastator, which was essentially a rocket launcher, did not make the cut. I should also mention that I haven’t played every Ratchet & Clank game, so some weapons – particularly those from the portable titles and their console ports – were not considered.

So, without further ado, let’s get this thing started.

Losing Control

June 29th, 2009 · 13 Comments

losing-control-final

With motion control looming on the horizon (and already here in the case of the Wii!), I wanted to discuss the future of gaming control. Perhaps a scary subject for those of us that had come to love the humble joypad controller. With Nintendo having changed it almost beyond recognition and Sony, who already have motion sensitivity in their existing control pads, seeking to take it one step further with their answer to motion control, it truly looks like the end for the classic joypad. What’s more, Microsoft, with Project Natal, are looking to do away with them altogether! Are we losing control?

To discuss what I thought of the matter I found it was best to fully explain my position. It turned in to a personal journey through the history, present and future of controller design. It is not a list of dates and facts and figures about controllers. It is a lot of personal opinions about how I have interacted with various controllers over the years. I very much doubt you will agree with everything I have to say, and I will be keen to hear where your opinion differs to mine, just try to comment without losing control…

Games vs. Reality: Ghostbusters: The Video Game

June 22nd, 2009 · 8 Comments

gbrvg2

Many of you are probably aware that the much-anticipated Ghostbusers: The Video Game has finally been released, and today Sarcastic Gamer’s own Havok Saunders did a great review of the title.

What you may not realize is that I also consider myself to be an amateur “Ghostbuster,” or “Ghost Hunter” as the case may be. This inspired me to present to the community a look at “Games vs. Reality,” from the perspective of today’s most popular Ghost hunting group, TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) from TV’s “Ghost Hunters.” For those of you not in the know, they have a very popular weekly show on Sci-Fi channel, now with its own “International Ghost Hunters” spin-off.

If you find this remotely entertaining, let us know! I hope to make this a regular feature on SG, to help keep us gamers grounded in reality.

NTSC version of Ghostbusters to be compatible with PAL 360s

June 9th, 2009 · No Comments

ghostbusters-release-banner

After what seems like ages, Ghostbusters: The Video Game will finally hit North America and PAL regions next week. The game has been in development for roughly two years, which is, admittedly, a pretty normal cycle these days. However, to a rabid “Ghostbusters” fan such as myself, it is an eternity. Honestly, anything longer than a month is too long.

The game is a timed exclusive for Sony’s home consoles in Europe and other PAL territories, but it appears that Atari is providing Xbox 360 owners with a workaround.

E3 2009: Sony brought it

June 8th, 2009 · No Comments

sonybackI admit to not being the biggest Sony fan in the world.  Guilty as charged your honor.  Being a very recent proud papa of a PS3, I must also admit that I had very high expectations of Sony to help me feel a little better about dropping four hundie on the system as we headed into E3 2009.  Their press conference put me to sleep.

Their presence on the show floor, BLEW_ME_AWAY.
