Review: F1 2011

October 31st, 2011 · 2 Comments

Part of Ugly Bob's contract was never to remove his helmet. Thankfully, that ensured him a lucrative career in posing for the covers of racing games.

Formula 1 is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting sports on the planet.  Well, at the very least, it’s infinitely better than kicking a glorified pig’s bladder around a bit of grass.

So I was positively giddy with anticipation at getting my hands on the follow-up to last year’s BAFTA winning F1 2010 – the imaginatively titled F1 2011.

So what difference does a year make?  Have Codemasters shied away from the temptation of just whacking new skins on the cars?  Well, the good news is that I loved F1 2011 – read on to find out why!

What Can We Expect From Grand Theft Auto V?

October 26th, 2011 · 6 Comments

In case you hadn’t noticed, small-time unknown publisher Rockstar Games announced relatively low-budget indie sequel Grand Theft Auto V yesterday, along with a date for the trailer: Wednesday November 2nd. Since this announcement, a Flash countdown has gone live on the site, an embedded version of which you see above.

With a logo revealed and the timer ticking, it’s inevitable that we find ourselves asking: what can we expect from Grand Theft Auto V?

Battlefield 3 PC Multiplayer Impressions

1am?  Really?  I would have to wait until 1 am to get into Battlefield 3 on my shiny new gaming PC?  That’s what EA’s Origin was telling me after I preloaded the game.  I had planned on sleeping from 9pm to 12:45am and then getting up and playing all night.  That was until I tried to load the game at 8:45 and Origin showed that my unlock time had changed to 10pm!  WOO!

I played for almost exactly two hours.  So was it worth building a $650 PC to play Battlefield 3(more…)

Review: Dungeon Defenders (360)

October 21st, 2011 · 1 Comment

What kind of game sucks me in (perverts) without even trying? Tower defense. It’s ridiculous how much time and energy I’ll put into a game like that while the hours just tick by. While I’m technically new to the genre, having only been indoctrinated since PlayStation 3′s exclusive Pixeljunk Monsters, I’m still new to the club. Once I saw how fun tower defense games could be, however, I took up every opportunity to do more.

The one thing I noticed though about tower defense games that I couldn’t get behind: the panic attacks. Yeah, you know what I mean, right? The little mini-strokes you’d have while you watched your towers try to stay strong through endless waves of enemy hordes? That was killing me softly. So often did I have the desire to just swoop in there as something other than the hand of God and actually become the aggressor!

Dungeon Defenders gave me this opportunity! Read on to hear more about my insatiable desire for war-mongering!

Review: Iron Grip Marauders

October 20th, 2011 · No Comments

When I first sat down with this game, I had a hard time putting my finger on what type of game this exactly was. First and foremost, you are a marauder. You are tasked with plundering as much loot as possible (in the form of gold and iron) in order to build an unstoppable army, which in turn allows you to hunt for even bigger treasures (more gold and iron, see the pattern?). The core game play is split into two main game types: turn-based strategy and resource management, which blend together rather well.

Crysis, four years later on consoles

October 18th, 2011 · 2 Comments

I’m not here today to write a review for a four-year-old game, only to offer my opinion on how Crytek’s 2007 quasi-open world shooter performs on the platforms that said developers had always stated it could never run on.

So let me be clear as I state this, it is impossible to run Crysis, in its original form, on a console. Porting the game into the more optimized CryEngine 3, however? That’s a different story.  (more…)

Review: RAGE Single Player

Bright daylight fills your eyes as you step into the unknown world of post-Apophis Earth, civilisation as we know it eradicated by the catastrophic asteroid some 20 years or so into the future. Within seconds, you’re assaulted by crazies and saved by an unknown saviour. He rolls up in an off-road buggy and roars at you, “It’s not safe here. Get in.”

So begins RAGE: id Software’s first new IP in years and, to top it all off, a proper good slice of shooting action.
