Big news from the Sony camp today as the company has finally tagged a firm release date on Insomniac Games’ “Resistance 2.” Rather than type some witty, drawn-out introduction, I figured I would jump right into the news. Well, right after that abbreviated, unimaginative intro.
I generally do not “Rock the Vote.” In fact, the 2004 presidential election was the last time I participated in a meaningful political race. Therefore, I feel a tad hypocritical telling a group of devoted readers to go out and vote. I find it hilariously similar to a bear telling another woodland creature not to defecate in the woods. However, as an SG writer, it is my duty to bring you the latest news in the industry.
Most young Americans seem somewhat averse to participating in the political process. We seem to avoid the privilege as if it was the Plague. Personally, I hate standing in line. Whatever the reason, there is a sizable chunk of the country that doesn’t vote unless it is for some singer on “American Idol.” Fear not, I am not going to encourage you to impact the future of our country. There is a more pressing matter at hand.
There is no way to escape it. Digital distribution, not the current disc-based system, is the future. Though opinions vary on how much longer discs will reign supreme, many in the industry seem to believe that the shift will happen within the next decade.
I have yet to fully embrace digital distribution. There is a Blu-ray copy of “Warhawk” resting in the dresser in my television room. I feel better knowing that I will always have a DRM-free copy of the game. However, it seems that even I am not immune to the power of digital distribution. (more…)
With Nathan Hale prepping for his ongoing campaign against the Chimera, I recently found myself wondering what the other Insomniac characters were doing to occupy their time this summer. I imagine Captain Qwark is sitting on his astro couch, sipping Dr. Pepper and munching Doritos. However, what about Ratchet and Clank? Do they have any plans for the future?
Insomniac Games has been a staple of Sony home consoles since it introduced Playstation owners to Spyro the Dragon in 1998. Since that time, the studio has put out quality titles almost annually and looks to continue that trend when it releases Resistance 2 sometime in the fall.
Referring to Insomniac as a staple might be a little unfair. The studio, at least recently, has meant so much more to Sony. In fact, Insomniac probably single-handedly held the PS3’s head above water during its rocky first year. During that time, Insomniac was responsible for two of the consoles best games. I shutter to think where Sony would be without Resistance and Ratchet and Clank Future. Hell, I probably wouldn’t have purchased a PS3 had those two titles been absent from the lineup. Long story short, Insomniac has some of the best developers in the business.
These days, most of the news coming from Insomniac is focused on the progress of Resistance 2. The steady stream of media coming from the California-based company has PS3 owners salivating over the sequel to the excellent PS3 launch title. However, there is more going on at Insomniac than is visible to the eye. What is the company up to?
Some guy named Ted from Insomniac Games says that the media is beating the crap out of Sony and the PS3, because it’s human nature to take out the guy on top.
After a bit of soul-searching and a staff meeting, we’ve decided that Ted is right. We do like picking on Sony for reasons that go beyond their lack of interesting titles, horrible online offering, chronic self-hype, inflated price tag, lack of rumble, programming difficulty, and annoying President. As it turns out, we’re all just jealous, because we wish that WE were losing the console war to a pair of less-powerful systems. WE wanted to invent a genius gaming platform descended from an epic brand and run it into the ground.
We’re such haters.

One Day….. One Day… I will be proved right about this!
Now the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair has jumped into the fray, along with, possibly, all the Christians in Japan. Today, PM Blair said, and I am paraphrasing, that Sony was bad and shouldn’t have allowed Resistance: Fall Of Man to be set in an alternate reality, that happened to include the Manchester Cathedral.
Although I doubt that Sony envisioned this getting so out of hand, I just know in my heart of hearts that this is part of the new “Humble” Sony. Sony that’s been kicked around by gamers, critics, and now the country of England. Sony who we should be running to the defense of waving anti censorship banners. We should run out and buy their consoles to show solidarity with the company. If we already own a PS3 perhaps we should get one for downstairs.
Before I exonerate Sony of any hand in leaking or antagonizing the Church to rally public support, I want answers.
1. Why did this story break on the same day that Sony discovered humility (and blogging)?
2. Why don’t they direct the Church to the developer (Insomniac)? You think Microsoft is gonna take the heat for GTA4 when people find Hot Coffee 2.0?
3. What took the Church so long to find this? It’s the hottest game for PS3 so far.
4. Sony’s got enough money to bring back Jesus, so why wouldn’t they hush this up with a big check in the offering plate?
I’ll tell you why… Because this is the best thing to happen to Sony and the PS3 since electricity. Censorship-minded gamers are rushing to their defense, despite their differences with Sony.
If I sound a little pissed off, think again. Whoever thought this up, is the most brilliant public relations mind in the history of the profession. Someone should make a movie about this. If Sony continues to execute such brilliant moves, they could indeed give Xbox 360 and Wii a serious run for their money. You had me for a minute Sony. You had me for a minute.

So Insomniac, the developer that actually did the work that’s got their cloaks in a wad over at the Church of England, is staying out of the fray…. letting Sony handle it.
Now I’m not saying that Sony has orchestrated this whole mess to rally support from censorship-minded gamers, and doesn’t want Insomniac horking their sympathy…….. wait… yes I am. That’s exactly what I’m saying.
