Lono v. John Carmack at QuakeCon

On the evening of day two Dave and I ran into John Carmack in the hallway to the auditorium where the Guitar Hero II finals were about to begin. He was surrounded by various Quakecon attendees answering questions about motherboards and his favorite processor or some crap. He was going on and on about how he built this motherboard and megahertz speeds of this and that, crap I could care less about and the guys around him were eating it up. I, on the other hand, finished my beer and grabbed another one from our portable cooler when we realized that this would be a great time to interview the Doom creator.

Unfortunately, he was surrounded by fans (worshippers) and we couldn’t get a word in edgewise to request an interview. Suddenly, he told everybody that he was heading out. The seas parted and Johnny Carmack came right at me. I politely handed him our swag data disk and told him I was with sarcasticgamer. I asked him if he had time for an interview on saturday and he responded:

“I don’t think I can tomorrow. I’m going to fly my rocketship.”

How do you respond to that??? With all due respect, there isn’t anything geekier that he could have said at that moment. Stunned, I grabbed another beer and headed into the auditorium for the Guitar Hero finals.

Good luck with the rocketship John. Say hi to the Martians for us.Is there anything that John Carmack could have said that would have been geekier? Let me know in our FORUMS!

Please note that it may take up to 15 minutes for a new article to arrive on the forums

In-Game Ads: What’s Your Angle?

June 20th, 2007 · 1 Comment

If in game ads bring the cost of the game down, or enhance the experience, I am all for them. If I still have to pay 60 bucks and/or I get snapped out of the fantasy world I am playing in by a Q-tips ad…. I am respectfully repulsed.

The producers of the much-anticipated Quake Wars say that while the game WILL monitor how long you look at an ad and report that data back to the mother ship, it will not collect any personal data. Whew.

I’ll know they’re spying on me if I start seeing ads for Oreos and Huggies.

What’s your take on in-game ads? Head over to our FORUMS and sound off!
