CVG’s got a story about a couple of pranksters who figured they’d confuse Rockstar’s technical support by claiming to be able to play GTA IV on their PC. Writing with ’surround sound issues’ on the “free version of Grand Theft Auto IV for the PC”, the jokers were pretty astounded to find tech support writing back to them with the statement that “The PC version of GTA IV has not even been announced for release and is still in development“.

Still in development? We never even knew it existed! Rockstar have been quick to deny every rumour of the PC version ever existing, but it looks like the technical staff of their own company have betrayed their privacy. Whoops.

Here’s another post fresh from the Sarcastic Gamer Community blogs, this time coming from Danish SGC member Trigger95, who’s been having a little ponder about gay characters in video games. I just heard the special GTA IV podcast and it really got me thinking. Lono’s reaction to the Bernie character especially seemed to hit home. Lono was slightly upset that Bernie was too much of a stereotype, a token feminine gay man, and indeed he is. His character is incredibly stereotyped, even Elton John would struggle to attain Bernie’s level of gayness, but is this really a problem?

Two months after Grand Theft Auto IV was released, I’m given another opportunity to see if they’ve finally “gotten it right” with respect to us 60GB PS3 owners who still experience random freezing in the game that can only be resolved by getting off our lazy butts and power cycling our machines. This new patch addresses a fair number of crash-related issues, but none of them come right out and say “Fixed crash that seems to be unrelated to anything specific at all.”

The results of a scientific study were released today about GTA IV and the way it changes children after they have played it. A small group advocating the banning of the series in Delaware because of the extreme violence funded the study. So to prove that children who cannot legally buy the game shouldn’t play it, they gave it to them for free and then watched them play it.

This Sunday I…

• Warned my wife what I was up to.
• Set my kids up with a stack of packaged snacks and put Noggin on so loud they couldn’t help but pay attention.
• Poured myself a huge iced tea.
• Turned off my phone.

It was my goal this Sunday to finish Grand Theft Auto 4, but thanks to a small virtual accessory, and a few other annoyances… I failed.

Thus far, Grand Theft Auto 4 is THE game of 2008. It’s the first next-gen GTA, and on par with Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, and Halo 3 as big-name releases. Some are calling it a cultual touchstone, whatever that is. Whether you like the game, or not, you cannot deny the impact it’s had.

You know what?  I’m sick and tired about writing about GTA IV.

When I turn on my Xbox 360, it’s connected to a nice little Magnavox HDTV/Monitor using the VGA cord at a resolution of 1280 x 768 (I personally think it looks better than using the HD cables.) It’s not as good as a high-cost display, but it does its job and was quite cheap. Since that purchase, I’ve never had to play another game in standard def except for the Wii, which didn’t bother me that much. I wonder why?

Well, I recently had the chance to head back into 2003 and play GTA IV on a Standard Definition TV. Suddenly, the cheap little monitor I have seemed like heaven.

Friday night, a bunch of us were goofing around in Liberty City in Free Roam and stumbled upon our own game mode that just might be one of the most addictive non-stop thrill rides I’ve yet to experience in my Grand Theft Auto 4 tenure.

We call it SG-Tag, and it’s super easy to play. The games last hours, and no one wins or loses. If you’re interested in our little discovery we’ll be playing it for Sarcastic Gaming Night this Friday, but you don’t have to wait until then to start playing. I’ve been playing the hell out of GTA IV, WE”VE all been playing the hell out of GTA IV. Every podcast is all about GTA IV. Every TV video game show is all about GTA IV. It’s understandable. Its an outstanding game, not a perfect game, as the exclusive reviews would have you believe, but a pretty friggin good game.

So, why did I spend my time playing Conan last night?

Sadly, my illusions about the invincibility of the HUGE tugboat in GTA 4 have been shattered. According to the SG User Blog by Painkilla05, the vessel can and will be destroyed by the Liberty City Poe-Poe, if hit with enough of their Tugboat-piercing rounds. (more…)
