Bad Company: the good, the bad and the irritating stuff

June 26th, 2008 · 11 Comments

If you’re active in our forums, you may remember a post of mine about the Battlefield: Bad Company demo. I got ripped into pretty bad because I didn’t enjoy myself, and also because many of my problems with the game were due to lag. Well, the full game has been released and I’ve gotten to spend some quality time blowing up buildings and shooting people in the face. I’ve got to say that there are many parts that are better than the demo, but there are also plenty of problems that are present in the retail version.

Take the jump and get your pitchforks ready, cause I’ve got a ton of problems with this game.

EA sign falling over. Fan(s) to the rescue.

June 20th, 2008 · 10 Comments

Something of a historical monument for gamers is close to being history itself.  The EA sign outside their Vancouver facilities developed a slight lean about a year ago, and has worsened in the past few months, to a point that officials with the company feared they may have to remove it.

“We don’t have the money for stuff like this in the budget, so our hands were really tied,” said a company official.  “But that’s when our fan…  I mean fans came to the rescue.” (more…)

EA’s franchises seem to be going in circles

June 16th, 2008 · 21 Comments

If there’s one thing I’ll never understand in this world, it’s NASCAR. From what I’ve gathered (remember, this is from a non-American point of view, before you shoot me down), it consists of plastic shells you can barely call “cars” turning left for a few hours while the spectators pay no attention and get utterly smashed off of their faces on cheap beer. Well, maybe I can understand the appeal… The only times NASCAR has engaged my interest at all are in fictional movies, namely Talladega Nights and the NASCAR-esque Piston Cup plotline in Cars.

What’s the appeal? In fact, more to the point, what’s the appeal of a recycled NASCAR video game? Potentially aggravating opinions follow…

Physical media on the way out?

June 4th, 2008 · 14 Comments

Eagle-eyed community members might have noticed that like many forms of media, physical products are slowly on the way out. Websites such as Netflix and platforms like the Xbox Live Video Marketplace allow you to stream or download movies across the internet direct to you, without the need for any DVDs. In music, CD singles are slowly disappearing from shelves; the UK high-street chain Woolworths recently announced its plans to phase out singles altogether, despite selling an arguably-profitable one in three of them in the country. Other stores such as zavvi and HMV have cut down on the quantity of physical CDs they sell on the shop floor, launching their own digital download services to compete with the likes of iTunes and Napster.

What’s on the way out next then? Games? Speculation awaits through the link below…

Former EA Founder, Trip Hawkins, Dishes on EA, DLC and Digital Chocolate

April 29th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Editor’s note: Mayshod is a new contributor and long time reader of Sarcasticgamer.com.

With all the attention we’ve been focusing on EA lately I decided to do a little research to find their roots. I refuse to believe they’re all bad. In the process, I discovered William M. “Trip” Hawkins III. He is the Silicon Valley pioneer that founded Electronic Arts. Although he no longer leads the publishing juggernaut, he’s nothing shy of a genius in the field and a forefather of modern gaming. (he designed his own major at Harvard in Strategy and Applied Game Theory).

I contacted Trip through his new company, Digital Chocolate (they produce mobile games for cell phones) to see what he thought about the Bad Company boycott and to find out what he’s currently working on. He was generous with his time and I’d personally like to thank him once again for granting me the interview.

Take-Two still not flinching

April 17th, 2008 · 4 Comments

With GTA IV’s April 29th release date fast approaching, gamer anticipation and media coverage has already reached Halo 3 levels. The game seems primed to break previous sales records and give the anti-gaming establishment yet another far flung reason to hate on our chosen entertainment medium. The only major concern gamers have about the title is EA’s impending offer to acquire Take-Two. While EA’s purchase of the company would not directly harm the already finished game, EA fearing gamers are already wary of what the future may hold, for one of the most successful and popular franchises of all time.

Luckily, Take-Two shareholders have yet to buckle to EA pressure.

Find out all the details after the jump!

Games pwn Movies

April 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Once again John Riccitiello, EA’s CEO, has stepped up to a microphone in order to tell us all what the future holds. As easy as it is to dismiss everything the man says for the simple fact that he heads up one of the most “infamous” companies in the industry, he may actually be right on the money this time. For the most part anyway…

Find out what EA’s CEO has to say about Hollywood and video games after the jump! (more…)
