November 18th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Activision Blizzard certainly doesn’t dillydally. As expected, the publisher and developer is already touting the massive success of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. A mere day after launch, the company issued a press release declaring it “the biggest launch in history across all forms of entertainment.” Bold words, but they are backed [...]

November 18th, 2009 · 2 Comments

I never thought I’d be collecting action figures as an adult, but as game makers look to expand the profitability and influence of their franchises, many of my favorite characters are becoming plastic statuettes.

South Australia’s Atkinson still drinking the haterade

November 17th, 2009 · 9 Comments

Michael Atkinson just doesn’t get it. The South Australian attorney general has penned a letter explaining his staunch opposition to a R 18+ rating for computer games in the country, which can be read at Grow up Australia, a site in support of a classification above the current MA 15+ marking. In the piece, Atkinson [...]

Braid tested my mettle, and I rose to the occasion

November 16th, 2009 · 7 Comments

It was a moment of extreme satisfaction; the cap to a short, yet mentally taxing journey. An accomplishment that one tends to gloat over, raising a fist while proclaiming: “Fuck yes, I won the day.” Despite my trials, I persevered, and emerged stronger as a result.
For some, Braid is an artistic gem, offering gorgeous, stylized [...]

The lameness of Facebook could be coming to the XMB

November 12th, 2009 · 4 Comments

No longer simply a battleground over exclusive content and third-party support, the console war now plays host to an inane slap fight for multimedia features, many of which – excluding Netflix of course – have no business on game systems. Consider Facebook, already dated for Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and reportedly – credit to Scrawlfx [...]

It’s amazing how quickly things can change. Take Eliminate Pro – formerly Eliminate, and LiveFire before that – as an example. Originally planned as a for-pay game, ngmoco’s online first-person shooter for the iPhone/iPod touch now sports a free-to-play model, offering a gratis download that users can support through microtransactions.  The switch followed a mid-October [...]

Electronic Arts’ promotional blitz for Dante’s Inferno continues with a look at the sixth circle of hell: Heresy. It’s Satan’s backyard, according to lead designer Steve Desilets, who proclaims: “You’re now in the sh**.” As you’ll see, it is indeed quite brutal, and certainly not for children, South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, or the [...]

November 9th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Ratchet and Clank have been busting up intergalactic goons for seven years. A Crack in Time is the ninth franchise title, and the final piece of the Future story arc. With that kind of history, one might expect the formula to become a bit stale. Not so, in fact. Even in its advanced age, the [...]

Sit down and strap yourself in. I’m about to turn your world upside down. After this, you might question everything you know. Does the combination of blue and red really make purple? Is Tupac dead? Are Vienna Sausages really made with chicken, beef and pork? It’s highly possible that you could be driven to the [...]

BioShock 2 footage reminds me to invest in a giant drill arm

October 29th, 2009 · No Comments

I’m really looking forward to BioShock 2. I haven’t spent much time talking about it, mainly because my focus has been on fall 2009 titles, but expect that to change as the Feb. 9, 2010, global launch approaches. For me, the game once subtitled Sea of Dreams is second only to God of War III, [...]
