Another great episode of Respawn Radio, excellently paced and informative, as always. I quite like Keadin as the third chair and I hope he sticks around.

    • Keadin

Well thanks! I’ll try not to screw up…

LBP doesn’t have input lag. When you jump off to the right and immediately wants to go to the left, there’s a “delay” because this game is based on physics. In physics, there’s a thing called “momentum”. When you jump right, your momentum is going to the right, so then when you input left, the character has to counter the “right” momentum before actually start moving left. Like when you’re driving a car, if you drive forward and then immediately try to reverse your car, your car will still be going forward for a while before actually reversing.

I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the time that lapses between you pressing the button and sack boy doing something. And yes, it exists.

Are you seriously lecturing us on physics in a game where a puppet called “sack boy” runs from right to left? Get a grip dude… its a game, those are my opinions, relax…

      • http://thumbpad.com.au Ian

But why have an opinion on that. You’re complaining that he’s nitpicking…about your nitpicking

      • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

I’m not complaining that he’s nitpicking, I’m pointing out that he want’s flawless physics in a cartoony platformer.

And the controls lag is a barrier to my full enjoyment of the game, so I don’t see it as a nitpick at all.

Good episode, but I have a slight problem with that initial talk about Keadin’s “Top 5 Games”.

GTA IV was, in my opinion, a brilliant game and I applaud Keadin for adding it in. The story, as he argued was great, the whole sub-text of the American Dream and it is unachievable is the video game inequivalent of “The Great Gatsby”.

The end of the game was heart wrenching, not only due to the voice acting and script, but the way the characters had been constructed throughout the game. Yes, Roman was annoying, but that was the point: Nico has a love/hate relationship with is cousin, and the fact that the player experienced that too speaks the powerful narrative and gameplay structures. Brucie was a hilarious critique of “ultra-hetro”, body building males, while Nico’s past is deep and fully fleshed out.

The gameplay was also on par; I had no problem with the controls (the car handling was especially well done) and although the first hour or so of the game was a little tedious, it picked up afterwards. Particular mission such as “Four Leaf Clover” really standout as not only interesting, but challenging and loads of fun.

The world that Rockstar constructed was beautiful; full of life, humour and extraordinary detail from the poorest parts of Alderney to the bright lights of Algonquin.

Apparently the critics support this; of the 86 reviews listed of Metacritic, all are positive and the average score is 98/100; higher than any other game.

Anyway, I thought I’d just show my support for Keadin and the game.

Don’t care about critics. The story was never fleshed out and why there was a critique of “ultra-hetero” males in the game is strange to begin with.

Niko’s “american dream” that people continue to fall back on is a total fallacy.

Niko didn’t come to america for a better life, he was on a trip for vengence, and everybody seems to forget that. He uses his cousin for work, and the “friend” system of constant cell calls disrupted any flow of the game.

Niko became a one dimensional sociopath who would kill anybody for any reason. Niko was a mindless thug and one of the least developed video game characters in all of the GTA games.

I had no problem with the controls, shooting or driving and actually enjoyed those parts of the game.

Make no mistake, I liked the game, but the high praise exhibited by some, were by people (Garnett Lee) who didn’t even play through the entire game, so take those “critics” ratings with a grain of salt.

Again I disagree with you on those story points; it was about the American Dream.

Nico moved to America to reinvent himself and get revenge for what happened in Serbia. But those two things do not contradict each other; Rockstar weaves in Nico’s desire for revenge and a new life. Yes, he wants revenge but throughout the game he begins to realise that maybe revenge isn’t the best way to solve his problems, and the game then gives the player the choice to decide for him.

Nico is a very deep character, he has complex relationships with many of the game’s secondary and tertiary characters, and he has a very dubious moral code that makes him realise that he should not be doing the things he is doing but does them anyway, like RDR’s John Marston. If anything I believe that he is one of the most developed characters of the GTA series so far.

Yes, I agree that Roman calling you at sometimes “inconvenient” occasions was very annoying but that is one of few criticisms I have about the game.

Also, there isn’t really a reason for making fun of “ultra-hetro” men, that is just part of Rockstar pointing fun at many elements of Western culture, which adds greatly to the humour and the depth of the game.

  • 8bitBass

    Thanks A listener.

Still gotta disagree with ya. The controls sucked and the aiming system and melee fighting were atrocious. I just hated how nico handled. Perhaps too realistic??

Glad Rockstar Finally started to get the controls right in Red Dead Redemption.

    • http://thumbpad.com.au Ian

The problems again, seem to be “physics” No doubt the melee was bad, but who tried to melee anyway; PLUS 8bit and Lono, I have issues when 8bit says how Vice City was the best….and yet clearly the controls, aiming and melee were WORSE in that game than IV…you can’t have it both ways.
Also Lono says how ‘bad’ IV was and then says that ALL GTA Games are the same plot and story: so by that logic IV would be the BEST simply because it was the latest and improves on top of all the other 3 while remaining “the same”

      • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Your logic needs some work Ian…

We liked vice city because of the setting, vehicles, and over the top action, not the story, so we can have it both ways.

      • 8bitBass

I don’t think the controls were as much of an issue for vice city as they were not concerned about adding inertia to every frickin’ step (Tommy) made in that game. I argue that vice city was more fun.

      • iMuteR

calm down ian. blame game developers not 8bit and lono. i didnt even play GTA 4 coz i heard from a lot of ppl that the controls sucked. i did however enjoy vice city. didnt care for the story but it sure was a lot of fun.

and u cant defend a bad aspect of a game. “the melee was bad, but who tried to melee anyway” really? lol. the point is the controls were terrible and they shoudlve been more responsive, thats it

  • http://cheifgokuc.blogspot.com/ ChiefGokuC

Great episode, can’t really comment about LBP or GTA since I haven’t played either. First Strike is pretty great, I really like the zombie map, very tense, lots of rushing around, and very easy to get lost.

  • http://thumbpad.com.au Ian

Nah Lono knows I love him. But ‘intertia’ ie- physics are not the controls. The cover mechanics in IV was excellent, and I loved the pop out of cover also the weight of all the cars was great once you adjust and little things like breaking windows. The input and animation of said ‘contols’ was much better than the floaty lightweight cartoon of Vice City.

I just think they were unfairly ragging on Keadin

    • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

First, I have no problem with the controls.

Second, we weren’t ragging on Keadin, we were ragging on GTA IV.

  • Keadin

It’s so good seeing so many of our listeners sticking up for quality design.

Lono, 8Bit… You’ve got some classy fans.

    • Lynx

      Zing.
