5 things Sony must do to win with the Playstation 4

August 25th, 2010 at 7:00 am · 57 Comments

In the course of human history, there comes a time when gamers start thinking ahead to the next generation of consoles.  Many people argue that all three consoles are winners in this generation.  However, Sony was in a position to defeat Microsoft and Nintendo and did not do so.  Here are five things Sony can do with the PS4 to ensure they come out on top, when the PS4 eventually appears years down the line.

1.  Innovate, don’t duplicate!

Innovation: Sony told us over and over again that Playstation Home would revolutionize how gamers played with each other.  That revolution lasted about 10 minutes inside Home until you realized there was NOTHING to do and the entire experience was one big ball of suck.

The sad thing about Sony’s best innovation is that it isn’t theirs. Blu-ray has been a saving grace for Sony allowing for more content and higher quality movies to be played on their gaming console.  I can’t give them credit for the invention but sticking that invention in each of their consoles is exactly the innovation they need to win the next generation.

Duplication: Microsoft gave us achievements and Sony duplicated it with the emptier feeling trophy system.  Now this may sound a little…how do I put it? off balanced, but achievements are the Los Angeles Lakers and trophies are the Los Angeles Clippers.  Their purpose is the same, they are both appreciated additions to the games entertainment value, but one is clearly superior to the other.

Remember that console you were soooo excited to purchase so you could use awesome motion controls and really feel immersed in the game?  The Woo…I mean, WII! Remember 6 months later when the novelty wore out and you clicked the “Confirm Auction” button on eBay?  Well guess what!?!  Sony has duplicated the Wii and brought us Playstation Move!  Even though Playstation Move will be have more accurate controls than those offered by the Wii, it’s just another novel idea that will end up chatting with your other unused peripherals…namely Donkey Konga bongos and the “Now free with the purchase of anything in Best Buy” DJ Hero turntable.

2. Better Launch Titles

Sony had a tough time getting out of the blocks with the PS3.  When Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII is one of the top three titles at launch, you have yourself a mighty big problem.  Of the 21 launch titles on the PS3, 17 were already available for the Xbox 360!  Resistance was the one bright spot and let’s be honest…it wasn’t that great.

Just to help Sony out, here are a few ideas for great launch titles for the PS4:

  1. God of War V
  2. Uncharted 4
  3. Kevin Butler presents: The Adventures of Sax Guy and Old-Spice Man

3. Do NOT invest anymore time or money into 3D Gaming

Six months ago, I might have argued in the other direction with 3D gaming.  Avatar was filling seats with its hot Blue Man Group sci-fi action, and James Cameron did the 3D world proud. Bad news: every other movie released in 3D was not done nearly as well as Avatar and 4 seizures and 10 migraines later, I’m done with it. There are plenty of ways to push gaming into the future, but please Sony, don’t try and make 3D gaming one of those ways! My carpet hates vomit.

4.  Charge for PSN accounts to make it better

Forget about Playstation Plus, charge an annual fee for all users and use that money to make your network better.  Xbox Live is so much better than the Playstation Network, I tickle my elbows when people claim otherwise. Examples?

While Microsoft and their 8-person party chat is calling me from their satellite phone high atop Mount Kilimanjaro, Sony and their no-cross game chat system is yelling at me through a flamboyant male cheerleaders megaphone.

When I open my drawer of video games to grab an “oldie but goodie” to enjoy for an hour or so, I cringe when I reach for a PS3 game.  Why?  Because I know that if I grab a game I haven’t played in over 2 months, I will encounter a 150+MB update that will waste half of the time I had to play.  So I reach for an Xbox game instead.  Oh sure, my Xbox games have updates too, but they NEVER take more than 10 seconds to complete.

5.  Pray that Nintendo throws in the towel

Sony, you may want to send Mr. Cobb into the dreams of Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata and plant an idea in his brain to turn Nintendo into a dog food company.  A dog food consisting of primarily shredded mini-game themed video game discs.

Honestly, I don’t see Nintendo striking gold twice.  They’re enjoying the spoils of their gimmick for now, but when the time comes to move on to the next round of the console wars, Sony can give themselves a great shot at being number one if they “StumbleUpon” SarcasticGamer.com and read this article.

Unless of course Nokia makes an N-Gage Console…Then they can only hope for 2nd place.

lets hope that sony is able to make some thing decent and compedative so that both companys keep pushing the gaming console market forward and not let it get stagnant..

i totally agree that 3d and motion control are not the way forward for gaming as ive stated in a few threads now so wont double handle by posting it all here again, but suffice to say that im not a fan.

lets hope that what ever comes out will be good and keep everyone entertained untill the next xbox what ever comes out :D

  • http://www.cdmounty.blogspot.com SmellyPirate

    I’m buying Move.
Also, nice article, DD. I’m impressed you allowed millions of potential readers in on your elbow tickling ways.

  • ryan k

I mostly only play games for the single player and rarely find a multi player that I care to play. So having a free but not as awesome online program is fine with me.

  • timewarp

I don’t think there is a superior between the achievements and trophies but achievements just came first (making them more original) though I agree with every one,

Though one problem. I don’t want to EVER pay for the PSN, I don’t really care if I came off as cheap here all I know is that I pay my internet provider so I can go online,

PSN+ just needs a feature the normal PSN can give people but something people actually want.

  • Viking

Also, don’t release the system at a 600$ price.
But I think trophies are superior to achievements, by far. Achievements only gives a small number, meaningless number at that. It boosts your score, but it’s somewhat a meaningless score to me.

The 3 levels of difficulties with trophies makes them more awesome than an achievement with more points. You can easily see “oh, he has 30 silver trophies, he is cool.” but with achievement scores they don’t give that same feeling. “So he got like a high number? Is that achieved by farming easy low-score achievements or what?”.

Anyway, I at least prefer trophies over achievements, but that’s just a personal opinion. As for PS4, I hope Sony get back “on top” like with PS1 and PS2, they had every chance to “win” with PS3, but lost to the Wii.

  • jaxboxchick

Crap…I thought this story was about WINNING a free PS4. I’m so dissapointed!

  • http://www.visual-meme.com Sterno

Bringing Move to the PS3 gives it a lot better potential for party games, etc. While they are a rare exception to my game playing routine, they are pretty fun. It’s not going to revolutionize gaming but it does add something worthwhile and overall Move sounds like it will be more practical than Kinnect.

On 3D gaming, Sony doesn’t need to invest anything else in it because it’s already there. I mean basically all you need to do 3D gaming is the ability to render twice as fast. Thanks to the power of the Ps3 they can pull that off. As the price of TV’s comes down, the value of 3D gaming will increase.

Achievements vs. Trophies? Really? Who cares. If trophies came out first, then you’d think achievements were a lesser knock off. Frankly I don’t see the appeal in either of them, but that’s just me.

As for charing for PSN, why would you encourage them to do that. One of the value propositions of the PS3 is that you don’t have to pay a subscription for it. The cross-game chat and all of that is a software thing and there’s really no reason the PS4 couldn’t do that. Hell there’s no reason the PS3 could do that. The biggest flaw in online play with the PS3 is that people’s mics suck. Had Sony bundled in a decent bluetooth headset from the get go it’d be a lot better.

As for Nintendo, they rolled the dice and got lucky on the Wii. AS it is, they aren’t selling a lot of new titles for it and the market is saturated. What’s Nintendo going to do to one up it? Roll in HD graphics and 3d? Oh wait, that’s the PS3.

  • Druza

Very good article. I agree with all of your points. Especially “No 3d”.
“My carpet hates vomit.” How thoughtful.

  • Someone Else

Charge for the PSN? Achievements are better than trophies? I don’t agree. Otherwise this article is good. I believe the PS3 is the best console this generation, though it definitely didn’t start out that way.

  • ManuOtaku

How many times we have to see that motion control is a fad or something on those lines, everyone predict the doom of nintendo with the DS and looked what happened, with the wii it happened again, now we are near the 3DS wich looks to triumph once again, and it will be the same for the next home console of nintendo.

Really if you think that the tiger Woods golf games, the pro evos on wii, also games like zack & wikki, red steel 2, and No more heroes, etc doesnt prove that the motion controlls really did enhace the inmersion, they you are really seeing things very wrong.

I do own the 3 consoles of this gen alongside a ps2, dreamcast, xbox, gamecube, SNES, sega genesis, psp, Ds, and let me tell you that the enjoyment i get from my wii is on the same level as my 360 and ps3, so crearly the motion control aspects is a strong indication that works, because the graphics things is not wii strong point, and i did liked it most of the good third party games on wii as much as the nintendo ones.

Compatibility for all model types of PS4 not just the lucky people who got the first one

  • cameron

Dumbest article on the internet I’ve read today, and unlike the author, I’ll actually use FACTS to prove my points, that being that author is an ignorant thickhead.
His first point is bullsh*t since trophies include platnium trophies for earning all the others, there’s a ranking system as well as an overall score to set apart gamers who actually complete whole games and get platinum trophies from people who just farm bronze trophies.
Also, on the same point, I think Sony knows a lot more about innovation than this dumb prick. He is clearly an xbox flaming fanboy given his lack of reason, both on his anti-sony opinions but also on his love of lame achievements with nothing to back it up.
Also, resistance was amazing, he clearly didn’t play it and listened to his xbox fanboy buddies to get an opinion, none of which have played it either. The game got amazing review scores and was actually fun to play and had inventive game design, something you couldn’t say about a single 360 game on its first year.
On the same point, its very difficuly to get big games on launch due to the lack on knowledge on the new hardware, it just isn’t feasible and never is. Look at every generation of games – did the launch titles EVER look as good as the rest of the games year after year? I didn’t think so.
On his 3rd point, 3D isn’t for everyone, as some people get sick, but that’s an extremely small percentage of the market, it doesn’t mean Sony can’t make money on 3D.
On his fourth point, charging would not improve the online service, the only feature he seemed to be able to mention was cross game chat, which I couldn’t give a flying f*ck about.
And on his 5th point, dumbest of all, and shows his ignorance more than anything else, Nintendo is not competing with the same market share as Sony. Sony has a hardcore audience, same as the 360, the Wii has a casual audience full of people who literally make their game buying decisions based on the title of the game and the box art, they don’t do research like the rest of hardcore gamers. Its a completely different and untapped market that has never been given any attention before, thus why the explosion of that market has made the nintendo extremely successful. I guarantee there are no hardcore gamers who actually bought a Wii instead of a PS3, thus Sony losing a customer.

    • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Ah Cameron, with your winning personality, it’s surprising that you don’t give a f*ck about cross game chat. It seems, to me anyway, that you’d have lots of people begging to play with you.
      /sarcasm

    • http://www.cdmounty.blogspot.com SmellyPirate

      You, sir, are no Cameron.

    • http://us.playstation.sony.com Sony Fanboy

      @cameron

No doubt, the author of this article is a complete and total XBOT.

Here are my rebuttals to his article:

      1) So what, because Microsoft invented the notion of Achievements, Sony cannot do something similar?!?! Sony invented the Walkman and I don’t see people complaining the iPod was a copy. It was, only it made it better. Nintendo will follow suit, copying both Microsoft and Sony, with their “Stars” or whatever. But you will no doubt hail them as “revolutionary”, since you are so enamored by the Wii. Remember that Trophies and Achievements are your online “resume”. Shows everyone what games you played, and how you have played them. Many people don’t like that since then everyone call tell that they don’t actually play the games to completion, they just blog about them as if they are industry experts.

      2) I agree with cameron. Launch titles are usually bad because, as you would imagine, the development SDK’s and libraries are all new for the given platform. They only get really really good far later in the console cycle. Go figure. And Resistance was, at the time, an awesome game! Compared to Kameo, even Noby Noby Boy would rule!

      3) I agree with the author on this one. 3D gaming, as it stands right now (with the dorky expensive goggles) is fad. How many families spent $1K or more on a huge HDTV in the worst recession since the depression and now being told they need 3D HDTV? Does anyone really think those same people are going to run out and buy a $2K to $3K 3D HDTV now? Yeah, right.

      4) You can charge for PSN when it delivers a) voice messages b) reporting system c) reputation system d) ability to change PSN ID e) cross game chat f) party system and more. To charge XBOX Live pricing, you need to deliver XBOX Live features.

      5) Here is TOTALLY disagree with the author of the article. 95% of the people that bought a Wii did so because it was a fad, a gimmick, an everyone-else-has-one-so-I-better-get-one too console. These are not hardcore gamers by any measure. Do you really think that those same people will run out and buy a WiiHD when it comes out?!?!?! Who are you kidding. You might, Mister console gaming blogger, but the rest of the Wii owners (little kids, grandma’s, families, chics, etc) that barely use it now will see no need to buy another, regardless of the features. Especially when the PS3/360 will be cheaper and have more features.

      • http://twitter.com/esmeraldasg Esmeralda

Your username makes any arguments you made in rebuttal invalid. “Fanboys” are never taken seriously.

    • Shane

If Sony didn’t make any mistakes and are so smart, how did they go from the runaway winner last generation to being in 3rd place this generation?

It’s clear to anyone who isn’t a complete fanboy that they are far from infallible. None of the consoles where perfect this time around. Microsoft had major hardware issues, and Nintendo had a nice gimmick, but haven’t been able to capture the interest of most hardcore gamers.

      • ShaneNeedsAHelmet

They aren’t third, they are second you moron. Using total sales when the 360 had a year (year and a half in Europe) headstart is retarded. They had an 8 million lead before the PS3 came out, and now that is down to 2-3 miilion… that you moron is called the PS3 selling quicker and better.

Also Sony uses SOLD figures, while Microsoft uses SHIPPED figures. Big difference.

      • Shane

No their in 3rd. They chose to release their console a year later then Microsoft, and it cost them a years worth of sales. Just because you chose to wait around at the starting line a year after the race has already started doesn’t mean you get to adjust the outcome based on that decision.

Even if you removed the first year of Xbox 360 sales from the picture (which only fanboys do) PS3 would still probably be in 3rd, or almost dead even. They have over a 5 million console lead over PS3 right now. Go look up how many Xbox 360s they sold in the first year?

Still from going from WAY WAY WAY out in front of Microsoft to even at best if you discount the first year of 360 sales, that’s a MAJOR lose for Sony. That would be like in five years time there being as many Apple computers in peoples homes as Windows PCs….with Linux kicking both of their asses.

    • Dogsdie

      Hi….Author here.

Cameron – Ask ANYONE at Sony if they would like to have the install base that Nintendo does. Anyone that says no to that question should be shot. Why do you think Sony is doing Move? TO MAKE MONEY BY APPEALING TO MORE GAMERS! That’s the entire reason my friend. Motion control has been a hot seller and they want to tap into that casual market. So no, YOU’RE WRONG…Sony and Nintendo have much more similar markets than you want to admit.

      4. I didn’t just mention cross game chat. I talked a ton about updating and installs. I absolutely HATEHATEHATE the fact that I throw a game in and have to wait 20 minutes for an update to download. I have 40 down/20 up internet and Sony is obviously doing it wrong. That is why when I buy a game that is multiplatform I ALWAYS grab the 360 version. The updates take 10 seconds tops.

      5. You’re obviously new to Sarcasticgamer…..we like to have fun here. The fifth point I made was 100% in jest and I even admit so in the second paragraph by saying “Honestly, I don’t see Nintendo striking gold twice. They’re enjoying the spoils of their gimmick for now”

You have issues my son…hire a specialist

      • wolfman

Hey DD, Love the Brown show. It has become my favorite SG podcast over the Blu show recently! Keep it up. Your article was fun but a bit stupid. Here is a quick rundown of why, (in my opinion) Trophies > Achievements, Sony will sell 3D and people will buy it, PSN is free XBL is not, Move will capture an audience on top of the current PS install base. To sum up, Playstation takes it’s talents to south beach all over xbox and wii.

  • solid_snake

This article is lame because sony dose not need a new console anytime soon & dose not need these things to win next gen sony can hold their own in video game market.

  • solid_snake

Also sony has everything under control with playstation 3 since they turned it around in 2008 & has pumped out plenty of new high profile exclusives & sequels to returning exclusives & hardware updates to increase playstation 3′s over all lasting value over their competitors offerings in the lenth of time it’s been out with more to come in the future.

  • solid_snake

Sony isn’t worried about their competitors because their way too busy focusing on doing their own thing & seems to be working out for them extremely well.

  • ChiefGokuC

I couldn’t agree more with what you’re saying. If I had to add a 6th, it would be: Don’t ever take away backwards compatability from the immediate past generation. Most people say “just get over it and move onto new games” but honestly, the PS2 had a library upward of 2000 games. By essentially, throwing away all of these games less than 1 year into the console, they killed one of the PS3′s good points. If sony is smart with the PS4, they would include backward compatabilty with the PS3 and maybe the PS2…

  • Rush

Honestly Sony has the number 2 spot locked up with the Playstation 3. They are like the Apple for consoles when compared with the XBOX. XBOX Live’s superior network it the ONLY thing good about XBOX. There exclusives do not sell as well as expected (example: Mass Effect 2, which didn’t even break into the top 10 of the top 10 selling games for 2010). If it wasn’t for XBOX Live and its great network for online multiplayer, it would be the next Dreamcast. And for all the Nintendo bashing that goes on…let me fill you in on something. Nintendo has the number 1 spot. I have a Wii and a PS3 and I have seen no need for an XBOX. Halo and Fable are just not compelling enough to go pick up an XBOX. Nintendo have more games in the top 10 this year for the Wii and DS systems than PS3 or XBOX. Nintendo will never have to throw in the towel, they are juggernauts in this business that frankly will always outperform Sony and Microsoft because their ONLY focus is video games.

    • Dogsdie

      @Rush

“There exclusives do not sell as well as expected (example: Mass Effect 2, which didn’t even break into the top 10 of the top 10 selling games for 2010).”

So quality = quantity sold? That’s a very foolish way of gauging how good a game is. By those standards, WiiPlay is one of the best games of all time.

I would take Mass Effect 2 over ALMOST any game on the PS3. I am NOT a XBot, I own both consoles and LOVE both consoles, but I don’t let silly remarks such as this go by without responding.

You don’t feel like you need an Xbox…fine, I can’t argue that. But you can’t argue MY opinion that the Wii is a waste of space…even if that space is just 1/6ft cubed.

The console is more than just games…you can’t just take away Xbox Live and say Xbox is inferior without it. Xbox Live is part of the Xbox 360 experience and taking it away is like saying that the Wii wouldn’t be so successful without the WiiMote. DURRRR

      • J.A.

EA has stated that ME2 is coming to the ps3… This thread is moot.

      • Rush

@J.A. I was actually waiting for someone to comment on my Mass Effect comment. Thank you for pointing out that Mass Effect is coming to PS3 (The ending boss fight was awful btw lol)

@Dogsdie You missed the point. This article is about how to ensure that a system will win. Therefore the company with the superior business strategy will secure the win. One or two good games will not result in great sales for a system. Sony learned that the hard way when its launch titles were crap. You can have quality games and poor business strategy and cause a good system to tank. People loved the Dreamcast I know I did. But we all know what happened to it.

People criticize the Wii for its lack of hardcore games, lackluster graphics, etc but numbers don’t lie and its sales of system and games are still ahead of the competition. I honestly bought a Wii because b*tches love it and to play Zelda and Metroid. Anytime I have people over girls see the Wii and say “OMG you have a Wii!! I’m so wet, lets play” So I wouldnt say its a waste of space; its like walking a puppy in the park.

But you can’t argue that XBOX Live is a big draw to consumers buying the system. The fact that people are willing to pay for it should tell you that. But hypothetically speaking, if the XBOX Live network was down for a few days or more, I’m willing to bet most people wouldn’t touch their XBOX. I’m not saying XBOX doesn’t have good titles, but most of their exclusive titles don’t really draw me closer to buying the system. Like every other system Microsoft has exclusive titles with huge followings (To name a few of the top of my head, Halo, Fable, Gears of War, Left for Dead and formerly Mass Effect which is now heading to PS3). The number of great exclusive titles on 360 dont come close to PS3′s and that will hurt Microsoft in the future of competing.

Believe me I’m not a fanboy of any of the systems. Fanboy-ism is retarded. I’m just a business grad that’s commenting on the strategies of the three companies and the products that they move and in my opinion Microsoft is the laggard.

  • Nubwithatub

why do i get the the feeling that the ps3 fanboys here are really sweaty and out of breath in their frustration at a SARCASTIC GAMER article… Sighhh

  • Iamlegend206

    @ Shane

dude your way the xbox 360 sale are so fake, like my man said In the Comment before u xbox say how many that shipped not sold, then on top of that how xbow fanboys have ran out and bought two or three “360s” cause the red ring, I’d have to say Atleast two million, every body I know who has a xbox has bought that one for that reason not cause they need to xbox it cause the hardware sucks that a fact.

  • dem0man07

:singing: We didn’t start the flame war….
This is aimed at all who are flaming the OP

Seriously who cares who sold more or what ever. Who cares who is first or third as long as all developers keep pushing boundries and making consoles that give us the consumer the best possible product. Why complain about that? If Sony did dominate the market with no competition why would they bother with making a new and better version?

Sony seems to feel as does Microsoft that adding motion controll is the way to go. Do most gamers agree? No I don’t think they do well hard core gamers I talk to don’t seem to anyway. And 3d? Again Sony feels that the gimmick of 3d has not worn off yet. Why where these added? Purely for a wider sales base as the OP stated.

I don’t believe either 3d or motion controll are the way forward for gaming. You may feel different and that is fine. But I have never had fun using the wii for serious gaming or watching movies in 3d.

Tbh I do not care who “wins” the next gen. Aslong as the next gen is a move forward in the gaming experience and not just slight improvements and gimmick to hold our attention long enough for them to take our money from our wallets.

Flame me if you wish but tell me you don’t want this too?

  • Droozy

    Cool story Bro…

lmao at everything you said…. there is a rebuttal to Everything you said. Its almost like your butthurt because you got a fat ps3 and then a slim $299 ps3 came out.
    1. innovation wii has the money maker with its motion control. 72 million consoles sold prove that. Trophies/ cheevos are a wash. lakers/clippers analogy is troll talk. Cheevos = how many games you buy Trophies = how many game you can complete. that all equals WASH
    2. Better console release games? wtf are you smoking? ANY console would benefit from that in history. the 360 was shaky, the ps3 was, the wii, the Genesis, the fu*king colecovision would been real fu*king good if it had a 5 games at launch…. wow
    3. You obviously have not experianced 3D with active shutter glasses. Polarized theater glasses blow. The home 3D is a much better version. The issue right now is that there is no true 3d universal code for the studios to use. But dont be a hater if you cant afford, have motion sickness ect. Not to mention the home HDTV 3d sets are the best 2D sets on the market. They are top notch 2DTv’s with 3d.
    4. Cross game chat IS YOUR only example…. you Prove how thats worth more then getting free (abeit Borrowed) games from psn plus. Not to mention there is a thing called auto download on psn plus. Virtually wiping out all Retro downloads. xbox is quicker though… that is for sure.
    5. is what you say is jest… but all in all your attempt at downgrading one of your consoles because you havent the time to play both consoles is sad. All the consoles have strengths and weaknesses… and it sounds to me like you only have the time to play 1 console.

  • http://blackxino.blogspot.com xino

disagree with most of your ideas!

“3. Do NOT invest anymore time or money into 3D Gaming”
just watch by 2012, you will be glad and appreciate that Sony did invest in the 3D. Just because you can’t afford 3d tv now doesn’t mean ps3 being 3d proof is useless.
I don’t think you could afford a HDTV during 2005, could you? now 2010 nearly 9/10 households got one.

“That revolution lasted about 10 minutes inside Home until you realized there was NOTHING to do and the entire experience was one big ball of suck.”.
Another person who doesn’t understand the purpose and concept of HOME.
Home is were you communicate with your fellow PSN users, you can’t do that on Xbox rather than go to xbox.com/forums.
HOME is there so you can chat to other PSN users, sure making it look like Second Life is too much but some people love the virtual reality life.

“Microsoft gave us achievements and Sony duplicated it with the emptier feeling trophy system. “.
    You are acting retarded now!
It’s not called copying, it’s called borrowing and improving. When Dante’s Inferno borrowed GoW’s gameplay everyone called it a rip off. But no one called Uncharted 2 that borrowed many mechanics from different game a rip off.
The reason being that when a game borrows an idea from another, it needs to improve on top of it. Dante’s Inferno failed to do this while GoW3 improved on it’s own system 10x. This is what Sony did with Trophies.
And Trophies are better than Achievements, numbers means nothing!

As for the motion, Wii was limited, Move is precise! Plus you need buttons to be able to feel unlike Kinect.

Yes ps3′s launch titles were bad, but people are still playing Warhawk.

“4. Charge for PSN accounts to make it better”

Get out of here man! PSN is free that is all that matters, what more do you want!?

I think sony might just edge through the battle between ps3 and 360 (bear in mind we’re only half way through the war or so, so far) , if you’re looking in terms of sales the fact the playstation 3 is the highest priced at the minute (and always has been) it’s never going to sell as well as the makeshift 360 because the majority of the 10/10 rated games everyone wants to play are on both systems, why not just play them on the cheaper of the 2? secondly, how many sales headstart did the 360 get? quite a lot, lets say you decide to spend when the ps3 comes out, do you want to play MW on your own or with your mates + ‘CROSS GAME CHAT!!! WOOOH’… sorry never really seen the pull to it. so we’ll say that probably happened for the last 3 years of the console war “my mates have got that one, so i’ll get that one too” ideal and it comes to now where it’s evened out a bit. people are starting to want to play uncharted, god of war 3, metal gear solid 4 (which was way ahead of it’s time, fits in perfectly with the greats i just mentioned) resistance maybe? it’s not all that great in my book i’ve bought both killzone utterly rapes it. back onto my point, the ps3 has outsold the 360 everywhere but the US i believe and we all know those nutters dunno wtf to do when it comes to consoles, play halo 3 with buddies and have chips ‘n’ dips maybe? god i dunno, neways
    1) better launch titles arn’t important when the 3-shittys been out for a year prior to them. it’s not much of a ‘wow’-factor when all your friends have the other console (microsoft released early to capitalize on the market and a lot of suckers fell for it, not me he-he :D i bought the wii for zelda >..>
4)pray that nintendo throws in the towel sony!!! or just come out with a rightly priced console next time that’s affordable.

all in all chaps, happy. i get god of war 3 (which i’ve just finished gotta be the best game i’ve ever played) metal gear, uncharted, resistance, killzone more new ips on the way, last guardian ffxiv online, all that or a dvd player i can play halo and fable on, fable btw of which only the first was any good. oh blu-ray aswell.

A key point I just want to point out to a few peoples arguments. Sony “chose” to release late or xbox early. They chose this because they believed it would help their sales. This as has been seen allowed Microsoft into the market and set themselves up well and truly as the dominant brand. If Sony released at the same time it would have blown MS out the water. So who’s tatic paid off? MS’s did. Sony let them in the door and Microsoft took the room.

While MS went the HDDVD route Sony went blu-ray this paid dividends for Sony as HDDVD is no more.

With online gaming MS went with Xbl where you pay a monthly fee and with that allowing MS to fund themselves and their Xbl to attempt to keep it top notch. Sony went for the free route to try to get the people in to start with and any upgrades or repairs had to come out their pocket meaning MS has an upperhand.

And Sony would have to win the pure power of the console war too

MS and Sony each do their own things well and should be celebrated for them. Why go fanatical over something that’s going to be out done in a year or so. Personaly I’m not. I’ll play what I want and enjoy what I want without biast either way. I celebrate the fact Sony now has a comparator to rival and push them. For I fear what would happen if this was not so.

@xino Are you seriously defending home? Some people also enjoyed the holocaust but that doesn’t make it good! Yes….i just compared home to the holocaust…IT’S THAT BAD!

    • karbaasi92

That goes also for the Brown show ;)

I disagree with all of your points, except the 5th one, but I guess that was the sarcastic part of the article. But it was fun to read. You probably got many page clicks :)

  • dem0man07

Now is that an oh snap!! Or an i see what what you did there? Just want to get it right.

  • http://www.ps4sony.net aesthetic

Not much to agree with here besides the launch titles.. The PS3′s launch titles were lackluster.. but then again so were the 360′s, and so were the Wii’s too..

It all comes down to price, the reason why Sony’s PS3 never sold well out of the gate is because nobody wanted to cough up an arm and a leg to afford the thing.

  • SHAFTUCANTHANDL

I will tell you who will win the next gen war right now!… the console that adopts something like the ability of the newer graphics cards out there for PC (such as ATI’s Radeon 5770)… Three screens of power tickiling your perefrial vision… ooohhh yea baby. The future is not 3d only, it is three screens, then someday that will lead to much more emersive gameplay… 3d or not.

  • Toharocoo

DoubleD, you win on so many levels. Mainly for stiring things up so much to gain all the hilarious comments I’m reading. xD

  • J.A.

Enjoyed the article. Didn’t agree with most of it, but still enjoyed it.

If this generation has taught us anything, we know the major strengths of the big 3.
    Microsoft -> Software
    Sony -> Hardware
    Nintendo -> Marketing

Whatever your choice was… Happy gaming.

  • JoeMercy

Charge for PSN account? are you stup id or what??

    • dogsdie

Well not charging for it obviously seems to only provide us with a lackluster product. If the PSN was as reliable and feature rich as Xbox Live, I would pay for both in a heartbeat!

  • Shane

So no one went out and upgraded their PS3 to the Slim when that came out? Yeah right.

LET ME SAY THIS AGAIN SO ALL THE FANBOYS UNDERSTAND. Sony had a massive fucking lead over Microsoft and then fucking blew it. Even if Sony had the lead by a few million consoles sold, that would still be way down from the massive fucking 6 to 1 lead they had last generation. How can you spin that as a good thing blow my mind.

    PS2 – ~145 million sold
    Xbox – ~24 million sold

    PS3 – ~37 million sold
    Xbox 360 – ~42 million sold

No matter how you look at it, they blew a major lead. If that doesn’t tell you that made mistakes this time around, then I guess your brain just can’t comprehend reason. The Xbox 36o certainly made it’s own mistakes with the shitty hardware, but the fact they have closed a massive gap with Sony is pretty impressive.

    • ChiefGokuC

There is no doubt that between PS2 and Xbox the PS2 was better. More games and better quality. Sony definitely messed up the PS3. I think that Sony should focus on making the console itself better instead of raising the specs. For example, all that sony has done since the console released has been: 1. take away backward compatabilty. 2. make the console slim. and 3. continuously up the hd size. All three of those things are terrible.

  • David

wtf is up with all the people saying that xbox has better online gameplay i find its works the same the only difference is that you have to pay for online gameplay on the xbox!!

  • rich

gave up reading when you said you can’t give sony credit for inventing blu-ray…

    SONY invented BLU-RAY.

    FACT.

    • Dogsdie

Google has taught me you are right. I stand corrected…The article gives them props for Blu-Ray anyway…It’s a pretty good article! You should read the rest. There’s elbow tickling, and an inception reference. I know you, you’d enjoy it

  • PPXEXE

Some of you guys got it right, but 80% of you are just sad.

Okay yes Sony messed up, but so did Microsoft, and Nintendo.

Sony lost they’re supporters because of the new technology it too difficult for none big companies to make game for the system not to mention expensive, and the free online gaming is a curse in disguise, being free there won’t be improvement, so you get few hardcore games that may or may not be a bust, at this point The PS3 is just like the PsP, good hardware with few good software.

Microsoft lost because any great software they get was made just for the 360, and just the 360. All the other games we’re just port’s of PC, and PS3 games, and most who own both 360 or PC, or 360 or PS3 will go for the Pc or PS3. At Best Microsoft is the new Sega, But Much smarter, and with way more money. Really They’re doing the best out of the Three because 360 will take anything as long as it sells.

And Final Nintendo, They lost because they forgot about the core gamers, The Wii is suffering despite it’s winning numbers, while everyone here on this site mt say they don’t on a wii, that’s a lie. They know it, you know it, do they play it yes, do they enjoy it that’s the big if there. Nintendo let the Wii-mote go to they’re heads they four controllers for one system yet forces core-gamer to use the Wii-mote, that is what makes them lose, how many more great game will come out, only not to be played for that reason alone.

Here a tip for each of the next Gen.

PS4 – Simpler tech, you need your support back!!

Xbox 1080! – Get Better Third Party support!!

Nintendo X! – The Return of the controller!

    To everyone defending companies they hold no stock in;

PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET A LIFE.

P.S. Take some English classes too, some of these comments have HORRIBLE grammar and spelling.

    • Toharoco

Meh, just let them be and laugh at how pathetic some of the comments are.

  • Starkgumbus

A year ago I was in the market for a console. Cost to have PS3 in my living room: $650NZD. Cost to have Xbox360 in my living room: $449NZD. Winner: Microsoft.

  • Druza

@fanboy commenters: Reach down your pants, unbunch your panties, and learn some English. Then we’ll talk.

  • PCFANBOy!!! (Aka Bad_haggis)

    Fucjk Yeah PC!! wOOOO!!…

Sigh, to be honest the main reason I went for a PS3 was reliability and if that gets some people incensed so be it. “My xbox NEVER broked ‘cept when i f*cked it too hard this one time” i hear you cry. Tough, I read somewhere on the internet that somebodies broke and i was immediatly unsold. And to be honest what exclusives has the Crapbox got anyway huh!

  • yuntwis
