Can Crysis 2 out Halo, Halo?

April 9th, 2010 at 9:00 am · 38 Comments

Crysis was released three years ago, yet, I’d still put its graphics up against any game that has come out since. Crysis had destructible environments before Battlefield: Bad Company. Crysis had open environments, drivable vehicles, oh yeah and four unique powers that could be activated at any time to suit your playstyle.

Yet, Crysis only garnered moderate hype, while receiving great reviews. While it should have been the biggest game of 2007, it was an also ran to many inferior games including Halo 3.

Why? Because it only came out on PC.

This Fall, Crysis 2 is looking to right the wrongs of Crysis and bring PC level graphics to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Can they do it? I attended what can only be called the premier of the game in New York City on April 6, 2010. While I didn’t get to play the game, we did get to see the tech demo and gameplay performed on an Xbox 360. And it looked damn purty.

Here’s the thing: Crysis 2 has the potential to be a huge franchise for EA. You’ve got a great character in Nomad and the “Nano Suit”, akin to the Spartan Armor, which allows the gamer to do Spartan type things such as high jump, have a regenerating shield and super speed and strength to take on hordes of aliens.

Can it out Halo, Halo? It better, because it will be competing directly against Halo: Reach at retail this Fall.

Crysis 2 does have an Ace up its sleeve: New York City. Crysis 2 is set in a NYC that gamers haven’t seen before. The REAL NYC. The Empire State Building, Central Park, the Chrysler Building, all the landmarks will be there, rendered to scale… Pending legal approval. Couple that with the ability to go invisible and a new stealth kill, you can play the game however you like, balls out, or as the Predator… In NYC.

You can’t do that in Halo: Reach.

This is all hype at this point, but here’s what I know:

  • The Nano suit will allow you to combine powers such as run and super strength at the same time.
  • The strength power has been augmented with assessment capabilities to determine weaknesses of foes.
  • The aliens from Crysis got a facelift and will be much more like soldiers, making the Predator tactics viable against any of the enemies, which was a sore spot in the original Crysis.
  • New weapons.
  • Fully destructible environments.
  • … and doing all of this in NYC.

From the brief gameplay that I saw, which featured destructible terrain, windows shattering and buildings crumbling looked REAL purty. It showed how some of the powers could be used in tandem and it showed a new one button stealth kill, while invisible. And it was done on an Xbox 360.There’s no doubt that EA is going to heavily promote Crysis 2. This IS their tent-pole shooter of this Christmas.

The only problem standing in its way is Halo: Reach.

*Author’s note: Thanks to EA for providing airline tickets, hotel accommodations along with food and drink at their Crysis 2 event.

    One word, Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Doc

    No kidding. Awesome.

  • PayneTrain

Am I missing something by calling it Halo: Breach? It’s Halo: Reach.

  • JaffaKira

Honestly cannot wait – was a massive fan of the first Crysis and am in high anticipation of this game ^^

  • Dark Sovereign

If you’re going to rip on Halo you should at least get the name right. Besides, we know you’re a hater. Why is this news?

  • CyberColossus

I love that you wrote this! I’ve seen your tweets regarding how awesome Crysis 2 looks and I did a little research myself. I cannot wait to get my hands on this lono. I’m no halo fanboy so I’m more than excited to see somthing actually kick halo down a few paces from the god status it gains from its dribbling OTT fans. Don’t think I hate halo. I’m really looking forward to Halo: Reach, I just don’t want it over hyped.

  • Dark Sovereign

Another game that was heavily hyped and came out in 2007: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Another reason Crysis wasn’t the big game of 2007: BRUTAL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS. I couldn’t afford a PC that plays Crysis when it came out and I still can’t afford one. The gaming press knew it too, which is why “your computer” was Game Informers #10 villain of 2007. If they wanted to sell better, they would have done what a number of pirates did: make the game run better on lower end systems.

    • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

So? What is your point? The bottom line is, for those that could play both Halo 3 and Crysis, I think Crysis is the superior game. Furthermore, they’re relatively comparable in terms of story, character and gameplay… Thats why I compared them.

And why is this news? Well, the game was just unveiled and I was sharing the details.

      Any other complaints?

      • Dark Sovereign

You spent most of the post talking about Crysis. There was simply no reason to add Halo to begin with. When I talk about God of War, I do not feel compelled to mention Devil May Cry. When I talk about Call of Duty, I don’t mention Battlefield or Counterstrike. Why then, would it be expected to name drop Halo 3 (and misspell Reach)when talking about Crysis? And how were they comparable in story? Were the aliens from Crysis a religious hierarchy devoted to the genocide of humanity and activating a galactic extinction system?

      • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Hey, here’s an news flash: Crysis 2 and Halo: Reach will be out within weeks of each other this fall. Both will have huge single player and multi player offerings and both are similar in scope and composition.

Don’t talk about Halo? How do you not? You sir, are a whiner. WAHAAAAHAAAHAHAAHAAAAAAAH

      • CyberColossus

Agree with lono. He aint wrong. Gamers by nature have to compare what’s better and worse. If Crysis 2 manages to be better than halo 3/ Reach there’s no guarantee that Crysis will sell more or be as widely received. After all halo fnabo ys will always love halo first. Doesn’t mean Crysis will be worse.
Halo has been overrated but it isn’t a bad game. Anyway I hope crysis kicks ass. It looks amazing

  • ShowSStopper

    Can’t friggin wait.

  • http://twitter.com/egg651 egg651_sg

This is looking awesome. Crytek have learned from their mistakes with Cryengine 3; it’s set to be incredibly scalable and will maximise the graphical capability of even 4 or 5 year old systems, hence the ability to play on a console. Hopefully they will not forget Crysis’ roots, and make the game a port from the PC to the console, and not the other way around.

  • MistaGav

I’m looking forward to it (and reach) but one thing I am really tired of in FPS’s now a days is these cliche’s. If it’s not nitty gritty realistic shooters it’s SPAECE MAHREENS in power armour kicking alien ass…

At least the real NYC is a bit different…sort of.

  • Dark Sovereign

    @Lono
And you sir, are the master of dodging points and weak excuses.

    • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Please enlighten me? Which one of your “points” did I dodge?

Broad strokes don’t let you win arguments Dark, don’t be that guy.

      • Dark Sovereign

You dodged the point I made about the reason the first game wasn’t the “biggest game of 2007″, i.e. that the reason it wasn’t bigger is because of it’s system requirements. You also dodged the point I made about the differences in the storyline. Tell me, how are they comparable, other than the fact that there are aliens in both?
I’m also amused to see that begging the question and ad hominem are acceptable arguments in Lono-land In the forums, please. This could take over the comments section.

    • Mark

      Sorry but.. +1 to dark

Though, halo sucks in my opinion.

      • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Huh? He’s talking out of his ass because he knows nothing of Crysis and is asking me to explain it to him… System requirements or not had nothing to do with the game being held back because System requirements were THE STORY with regard to Crysis.

Just because I don’t answer the town moron when they speak up doesn’t mean they win for asking stupid questions…

@dark: read, learn, then come back

  • ScHiZ0

“…and bring PC level graphics to the PS3 and Xbox 360.”

Excuse me but since when in the last two years have PS3 or XBOX had superior visuals to a high-end PC rig? In fact the original crysis looks better (WAY better) on a contemporary PC than any PS3 game that will ever be made can look.

  • ScHiZ0

D’oh I just read the sentence again and realized that I got it the wrong way around. Sorry 8)

  • TomSawyerPhD

Crysis 2 won’t come close to competing with Halo Reach. It may be a great game but it will need to be an exceptionally unique multiplayer game to compete with a Halo title. You’re talking about a game that has been on XBL’s top 2 titles since it’s release in 2007. No other game has done that and with good reason.

  • http://www.uorgaming.com V33G33

As a competitive shooter, I doubt Crysis 2 will beat Halo: Reach. The single player may be better, I actually wouldn’t be surprised if it is, but if the multiplayer is like that of the first game I’ll take Halo any day.

  • Shane

As far as sells go, I don’t think Crysis 2 has a chance in hell of competing with Halo: Reach. Millions of people will buy Halo: Reach because it’s a Halo game (and because it’s going to be awesome as well.) Not very many people played the first Crysis, so it doesn’t really have any major following. I know this game was completely not on my radar, but if it ends up being as good as it looks I’ll probably play it.

  • gam3r

LOL im getting both crysis 2 and halo: reach anyway so it doesn’t matter hahaha

    • CyberColossus

      Second that!

  • John

Well, whoever wrote this article really knows nothing. I don’t understand why you keep emphasizing “AND ITS IN NYC!!!1!” Who gives a fuck? Just because a game is located in a real world location means nothing (Think: Half-Life, Halo, Mass Effect, BioShock, The Elder Scrolls, Demon’s Souls, Fable). And whenever he is getting so excited about “one hit stealth kills while invisible” About every single game has done that (Halo: CE was one of the first) and it is nothing special. Crysis was a very pretty game yes, but the AI were quite stupid, the destruction was not on the caliber of Battlefield Bad Company and it was absolutely not the best game of 2007. Mass Effect, BioShock, the Orange Box, CoD4: Modern Warfare, and Halo 3 were all better. All you are taking into account in this article are the aesthetics of the game. If you take into count the whole picture, Halo 3 had a lot more to offer (and the multiplayer of Crysis couldn’t compare to the multiplayer of Halo).

Halo: Reach is going to shit on Crysis 2, just wait for the review scores and the sales, I guarantee it.

    • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Your insane if you think Halo 3 was better game than Crysis.

And who gives a fuck that the game is set in NYC? I do.

I think 4chan is missing a troll, better hurry back!

    • TB14x

Halo Reach can win the sales but Crysis 2 will win everything else, you are just another fanboy who cant afford a good pc, so stfu…and you cant compare the multiplayers idiot, Halo was made for multiplayer and Crysis was made for singleplayer duhh get your facts right before you start trolling fanboy

  • loki lives

i think what lono is trying to prove is that dark is holding prejudices against crysis, either his rig couldn’t hold up to the req’s or halo fanboy alert

  • loki lives

point i’m trying to prove is that bungee is beating the halo horse into the ground, although to support darks statement, halo reach probably will outsell crysis 2, if only because of the massive difference in install base on their respective platforms…. but i digress that i do want to try both, and am looking foreward to the release

  • Blitzn

    get him dark

  • Matt

Everyone has their own opinion sure. Everyone wants their game to be the best. Agreed. But when it comes to something as large as halo? Theres no contest. There are only a few games that are bigger such as star craft or even the command and conquer series. There are either halo lovers or haters. If the haters cant see the facts then thats too bad. And “loki lives”, ur an idiot. there is no such thing as beating a game into the ground or “over milking it”. If the game sells, you keep making it. Thats how the world works dumb ass. HALO FTW!!!

    • CyberColossus

if it aint broke dont fix it

  • http://Free.com Jared

Crysis 2 is going to have a lot of similarities to BC2 and Halo Reach.

Crysis 2 is going to have Destructable Worlds, Procedural Deformation, Overhauled AI (Cover System, Hit Reactions), and a way more expansive Multiplayer than Crysis.

Crysis 2 is being developed by two studios, Crytek Germany for Singleplayer, and Crytek UK (Formerly Free Radical) for Multiplayer. In Crysis the Multiplayer was an afterthought, although Power Struggle is highly popular (unique gamemode – google it).

And don’t think the Crysis 2 Singleplayer won’t be good. Crytek has hired famous author Richard Morgan to write the story for Crysis 2. This is the game to keep your eye on. :) If you like the Halo series, you will like Crysis 2, because they are both tactical, have aliens, and have super suits.

  • gv

ok first of all dark he was describing crysis 2 not crysis.crysis has high req crysis 2 is on your beloved 360 and has low req so shut up.next the a.i in crysis isn’t made wrong it just has a mind of its own unlike halo which is set with flow nodes.

oh yes.does halo 3 or halo reach come with a editor so you can make your own games not just your own maps.Ya you can make your own game with cryengine 2 editor

can you make a open world game using the 3d engines that halo 3-reach used………NO……….

And one of the first game developers to ever make a open world shooter was crytek. Not like halo open world im talking about actually running around threw a jungle. Not going on a specific set path

crysis has a better multiplayer experience too…
if you want to argue with that just play the damn powerstruggle mode online.. you will change your mind after that. Its open not enclosed you can snipe sneak kill, buy tanks, aircraft, weapons
and your not limited to a highest rock.

reason i know all this is because im one of the modders on crymod.com

ohhh and did you know you can swim in the game drive boats cut down trees fly break buildings.

but all this doesn’t matter because halo series beats it with its “awesome” gameplay let me give you a demonstration of the game play.shoot for 15 min no covering just running around shooting…. in game movie….next level. oooooooooooo awesome.

argue if you would like but im right because i moddify games. etqw is better than halo 3 even the graphics are better only reason halo 3 is so good is because its xbox360 exclusive weird crysis 2 is cross platform… i wonder why bungie doesn’t want to put the game on pc……graphics…

  • SLHappyEmo101

man…it’s games like this that make you wanna commit suicide if you can’t afford it =P

  • caveman59847

I can’t wait to get a hold of this game.I don’t want to dumb it down by playing it on a gaming console i will only be playing this on my Computer. I think Crysis will smoke Halo but it sucks for console gamers cause they will never see the true potential that is there
