HUGE SALE AT GAMESTOP! -FREE- Demo discs for just $5! (While Supplies last)

March 17th, 2010 at 11:34 am · 12 Comments

SG Buddy Sean Hollister tipped us on a developing story over on Nintendo Gal. Apparently, the FREE demo for Monster Hunter Tri (Wii) will only be given to those who put $5.00 towards a preorder.  (INSERT OBLIGATORY COMMENT ABOUT DEMOS BEING INTENDED TO ALLOW A GAMER TO EVALUATE A GAME BEFORE MAKING A PURCHASING DECISION AND THE IDIOCY OF CHARGING FOR ONE HERE)

While Capcom and Gamestop aren’t returning emails, a bunch of good old fashioned detective work by the NG community turned up some pretty convincing evidence of a nationwide scandal that, if proven, could upend the enormous amount of trust that gamers have come to place in the Gamestop organization.

Sorry, I’ll pay $5.00 for a demo about the same time I fork over $15.00 for 3 new maps in MW2.  Seems like game execs and retailers alike have all been over-sampling the Greedy Punch.

Are YOU buying what they’re selling?

Well, let´s just call it “preorder-bonus”-demo instead of “trying-the-game-so-I-can-make-a-purchase-descision”-demo.

    Gamestop is really weird…

This isn’t the first time that it’s happened. You get “free” demo from doing stuff like this. And yes I’ve been guilty of it in the past, but only because I was pretty sure I was going to buy the game, so I place a pre-0rder.

Besides, if I don’t like the game, I’ll switch my pre-order. They do allow that, ya know.

I have to agree with darkwonders – it’s a preorder bonus and there’s no obligation to carry through with the preorder anyway. It’s your money and can get a refun/ switch it to another game if you’d like. It’s no big deal.

What Darkwonders said pretty much sums it up…There is absolutely no reason to complain. You are not paying for the demo, your paying for the pre-order the demo is a simple bonus for putting money down on a new copy early…

Ok, so some might say it’s a pre-order bonus. But isn’t demos supposed to convince you to buy the game, rather than serve as a taste for those who already have decided?

  • Alex

I think everyone would agree (and maybe thats the point of the whole story) that the Wii needs an ordinary download-serivce for demos. And I mean not just for a handful of WiiWare-games…

hmm let’s say that WAS the purpose of the article. yeah.. yeah… that’s the ticket

It’s a Wii game. If you aren’t sure whether to buy it or not (and renting isn’t an option) just wait a month. Its price will plummet like Mad World and you can pick it up for a song. Trust me, if it doesn’t feature mustachioed plumbers or elfen boys in their green pajamas it will not retain its value long.
Further I agree with Alex. The Wii and its game sales would profit from a substantial demo download service like the other 2 consoles. I have probably missed gems on the Wii because I won’t take a leap of faith on an unknown quantity relased for a system chock-full of shovel-ware.

I doubt that Monster Hunter Tri will fall in prize as quick as MadWorld :/

But yes, demos would help ;) I bought Bit.Trip Beat after playing the demo. I never really recognized that game, but it´s really great, especially for only 5Euro (thats ONE Map for MW2 )

I never understood the benefit to a demo disk of a game I’m preordering. If I don’t know if I’ll like it, I’m not preordering, if I do know, I don’t need a demo disk, if I’m on the fence, I need the demo disk before making that decision.

That said, if you’re preordering anyway, why not get a ‘free’ demo disk with it to whet your appetite. At least that’s some sort of value add, and doesn’t screw later customers like some preorder bonuses.

I do recall buying the shareware version of Doom for five bucks on three floppies -you were paying for the distribution method, not the game – so it could be argued this is similar.

Hey be nice to Doc, I think he is a new guy like me! I’ve only been on for a week or so and this is like the first new thing I have see him post. Give the new guy a break. Don’t worry Doc, whoever you are, I got your back. ;)
