Impressive, huh? It’s only February, and we’ve already had uber space opera Mass Effect 2 scoring over 40 perfect scores across “Game Review Land!” Looking across the release landscape for the year, I can’t really see any major titles that will put a dent in the Normandy’s hull.
Of course, I’m biased. I’ve loved every minute of scoring my 1000 Gamerscore. I luxuriated in that damn game like I was taking a warm bath at a five star spa, complete with a Russian woman giving me a … pedicure.
However, not everyone loves science fiction. The assertion that the game will take top marks at the end of the year is a stretch. Let’s face it, games that come out in the beginning of the year have a tendency to get buried in the game release shuffle as the year drags on. When the unholy trinity of inFamous, Prototype and Red Faction: Guerrilla came out in May of last year, there were people jumping up and down in excitement over just how good these games were. By the end of the year, they had been run over by a slew of really solid releases like Batman, Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2, and people had to think back hard to remember exactly what it was they liked about them.
Guaranteed, by December 2010, as crazy as people are about the game right now (including moi), people are going to have to seriously “try” to remember just how good the game was overall.
Don’t get me wrong, there are a ton of hopefuls over the course of this year that I’m excited for. Splinter Cell, Alpha Protocol, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, Bioshock 2, hell, there might already be another inFamous, Batman, Fallout and Crackdown this year. While they all seem like solid contenders, will they be able to outstrip the bang-bang-shooty-run-and-gun fun, tied together with full novel length storyline, like we saw in Mass Effect 2?
All the major game publishers have dodged the Modern Warfare 2 bullet from last year by shifting their release dates to first quarter 2010. Unfortunately, they now have the unenviable position of all doing battle with one another, while trying to stay relevant, by December.
All I know is this: all those titles have a hell of a hill to climb with Mass Effect 2 having already set the bar pretty damn high for the rest of the year.

It’s not that much of a bold call. ME2 is one of the best games I’ve ever played.
There is just too many games due out this year. Look for your opinion to change….. imo :p
Definitely too early to call it GOTY. The hype bloated the reviews more than a little bit. A great, solid game to be sure, but the prefect scores it got were dumb. Any honest ME2 player can come up with a fair number of things ME2 did that missed the mark.
It will definitely be in the running for GOTY, but there are have a bunch of huge titles coming out in 2010.
Of course, but I can also come up with a bunch of things that missed the mark with Batman, Uncharted 2, MW2, Assassins Creed 2, that were also up for the GOTY deliberations. No game is perfect (Asides from Ocarina of Time), and despites its VERY short list of things I could have lived without, I think I enjoyed ME2 more then any game that came out in 2009 as well.
Don’t forget Read Dead Redemption. The gameplay trailers look amazing.
I agree with Lono in that this is one of the best games i have played ever. It has stunning graphics and an original story that keeps you on the edge of your seat for the entire of the game’s duration. The graphics are also very detailed and there are no longer texture pop-ins or elevators. They went above and beyond making this a masterpiece in video games.
I play a lot of video games, and Mass Effect 2 is one of the best that I’ve ever played. There is a slim chance that there will be a game that I like better this year, but I really don’t see it happening.
With massive releases like Final Fantasy XIII, Bioshock 2, God of War 3 and Heavy Rain out in Q1 as Mass Effect came out in January it is very unlikely that people will still remember it for GoTY, more likely it will go to a game coming out at the end of 2010.
I did love Mass Effect but I don’t think it’ll win Game of the Year because of when it was released rather than than it being a bad game
of course it is. There’s gonna be a lot of “best games” out there and I’m not saying this because I’m hoping an Uncharted 3 will get GOTY, I’m saying it because some people forget we have another 11 months of gaming left and there’s still a lot of strong contenders for the title of game of the year.
Game of the month? For now I’ll get it that but for now PS3 gamers who think their getting mass effect 2, laughing at the gullible. What fun!

I think it is to early because we still have a long way to go but it seems like we have a more limited selection of games this year so we will have to see how it pans out.
