Oh, for the love of all that is holy.
First, Borderlands’ developer Gearbox Software is rumored to be working on Duke Begins, the prequel to the epic story that is Duke Nukem. Then, a trio of Duke Nukem portable titles are being worked on by Frontline Studios, only to have been delayed into next year. Now, according to the official Duke Nukem Facebook page (wait, there is one?), the phrase “Duke Nukem doesn’t stay down for long” accompanies a screenshot titled “D-Day preview”, which looks to be yet another tired attempt at a next-gen Duke Nukem title.
Gawd. Take a look at this insanity after the jump.

Okay. This is on the Duke Nukem Facebook page.
Are we serious? Is anyone out there really looking forward to this title any more? I remember when I was excited: it was back in 1999. Ten years later, Duke Nukem Forever has been tied up in lawsuits and earned its place in the Hall of Video Game Punchlines alongside other famous jokes as Daikatana, Jack Thompson, and the Phantom “virtual” console. I mean, let’s face it. Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard, which released last year to a smattering of praise for its tongue-in-cheek bashing of the history of video games, was designed around the joke that Duke Nukem has become.
Who are they pushing this game to? Who the hell is running the Facebook site? Who is still a fan of Duke Nukem? The “ironic” baby boomer crowd who played the original Doom on their IBM 386? I just don’t get it.
Well, I’m sure we PC gamers are in for several more hysterical years of legal battles, teaser screenshots, studio closings and millions of dollars of wasted resources devoted to continuing to push this tired, old concept uphill to a waiting crowd of approximately no one.

I’m dubious to how such a game would be received by the younger crowd. I myself never played Duke Nukem, it was before I became a gamer. In dallying to deliver a new current generation offering, ‘Duke’ has missed the attention of the generation that remembers it and is unknown the the generation preceding it.
i still remember duke nuckem but to be honest i don’t want to buy another duke nuckem game now
Wow, Kojin, that last sentence was pretty insightful. Dead on target and well summarized.
tongue-IN-cheek, not tongue-and-cheek
Other than that, spot on column!
