Visceral’s descent into hell reaches Heresy

Electronic Arts’ promotional blitz for Dante’s Inferno continues with a look at the sixth circle of hell: Heresy. It’s Satan’s backyard, according to lead designer Steve Desilets, who proclaims: “You’re now in the sh**.” As you’ll see, it is indeed quite brutal, and certainly not for children, South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, or the International Nanny Association. The INA previously decried the Bad Nanny Achievement/Trophy, claiming that it could “promote violence toward children.” Keep in mind though, the game is set in hell, and Dante won’t be dealing with defenseless babes. They’ll be swinging crescent-shaped blade arms, as you’ll see in the video.

Visceral employees also respond to some of the controversy surrounding the game, including complaints that it’s an affront to the literary masterpiece. In defense of the game, gameplay engineer Tom Wilson says a carbon copy of Dante Alighieri’s revered poem wouldn’t be much fun to play. I agree. If I pay $60 for a game, I’d rather it be fun than true to the source material. Besides, the existence of EA’s adaptation doesn’t diminish the quality of the actual poem. It’s still going to be considered a timeless classic. Visceral employees took liberties with the story, and they’re certainly not ashamed to admit it. If you ask me, people need to lighten the f**k up.

The video also offers some info on the judgment system, which allows you to punish or absolve as you see fit. I generally like to play the hero, so I’ll probably opt for the holy route. For more details, check out the Heresy Developer Diary.

With Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time available for purchase, I need a new game to latch onto, and it appears that Dante’s Inferno is that game. It will launch in North America for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable on Feb. 9, 2010, sandwiched between Bayonetta and God of War III. Europe will have to wait three extra days (oh noes).

I am pretty much sold on the game already, but if you’re taking a wait-and-see approach, Electronic Arts has announced a demo, set to launch in December. According to the official release, players will battle to the gates of hell, where they’ll square off against Death. Win, and the reward is Death’s scythe.

Violence is up next. Should be interesting, to say the least.

i’ve seen what i think the infants are, skeleton like midget enemies that weild small syth like weapons, least to say their not defenceless so the INA are idiots.

To those who think this’ll ruin the poem answer this for me, have you ever played a movie/book tie-in where they follow it in-depth to the tinyest detail (which ironicly is every movie/book tie-in) THEY SUCK! Honestly would why anyone would prefer a wimpy poet to a syth wielding knight i’ll never know.
