SG Review: OMG LBP PSP FTW

LittleBigPlanet holds a special place in my heart.

Fans of the Blu Show podcast may know that I had an almost year-long bet with my co-host Frawlz, where I proposed LBP would outsell Killzone 2 in each games’ first six months on the market.  LBP didn’t let me down; I won the bet, but have yet to actually collect my winnings (but that’s another story for another time).

What I want to discuss today is Sony’s decision to take their LBP PS3 success and throw it away “duplicate” it on the PSP.  For you see, the embargo on discussing LBP PSP is up today and I’ve got a few things to say about the game…

Make a list of games that have “wowed” you on the PSP.

Go ahead I’ll wait.

Okay, I gave you like three seconds, you should’ve had time to make the list, double check it, take a deep breath, and then triple check it.  I kid, I kid but the point still remains that while there are a lot of good games, there aren’t exactly a lot of stunning games.

Most recently we’ve had Gran Turismo PSP which had some stunning technical aspects to it, but in light of glaring omissions and other faults, it fell flat on its face.  Wipeout Pure is another great suggestion for a technically impressive PSP (that game did deliver on all fronts). God of War: Chains of Olympus is probably the safest bet for the poster child of impressive PSP games…right?

It doesn’t take long to realize there is a short list of developers we’re used to seeing do well on the PSP and none of them were working on LBP.  I was extremely hesitant to get excited when I learn that it was being developed.  I was able to get a bit of hands-on time with LBP PSP at E3, but even then it was just sort of  “there”, alongside other games that weren’t really showcased.  It was at E3 where I was first exposed to Rock Band Unplugged (didn’t do much for me), Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier (I felt like they were preparing to send that game to die because it was just “sitting there” with no fuss being made at all), and of course Gran Turismo PSP (and we all know how that turned out.)

When I got sent a preview version of LBP PSP, I have to admit I was a bit nervous.  I didn’t want to see a beloved franchise tarnished… but when I turned the game on, something magical happened.  I was looking at LittleBigPlanet.  I was looking at it on my PSP.  I mean it WAS the game.  It had the same style (but different) intro video, it had the same (but different) Stephen Fry narration, the levels had the same (but different) look to them, the gameplay was only slightly scaled back from the PS3 version and most of the things scaled back were simply due to the control limitations the PSP has (one less analog stick and no L2/R2, or L3/R3).
