I never thought I’d be collecting action figures as an adult, but as game makers look to expand the profitability and influence of their franchises, many of my favorite characters are becoming plastic statuettes.
Toy maker NECA has been at the forefront of this trend, pumping out numerous wares based on popular IPs including Dead Space, God of War, Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil. Now DC Direct – a division of the famed DC Comics – wanting a piece of the pie, recently announced plans to release Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal) and Nariko (Heavenly Sword) figures next July. That’s on top of the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance lines the manufacturer will ship this December.
Great. My expensive hobby has yielded yet another, albeit less-expensive hobby. I only hope that NECA and DC Direct steer clear of the Sly and Uncharted franchises. My man cave simply isn’t big enough to house that much plastic crap.
Toy collection is, admittedly, a pretty fruitless activity. But I’m a materialistic sap with money to burn, and as such, will spend without regard for my bank account. I could certainly do worse with my cash. For instance: I could purchase a Godsmack album, or shove $20 into an infant’s nose, and subsequently donate the money to a pride of hungry lions. Don’t hate; lions have to eat too.
