Eurogamer Expo: My Take On Dragon Age: Origins’ Platform Performances

As I said on our first podcast of the weekend, Dragon Age was one of my more anticipated titles to see and get hands-on with. Well I did get hands-on with it, briefly, for as long as I could stand to keep my eyes on that screen.

You know that feeling you get when you look at a really ugly person? Like, really ugly? So ugly that you don’t even feel guilty for thinking the person is unattractive? And no matter how much the view offends your eyes, you just can’t look away?

In retrospect, this is the Mass Effect platform argument all over again. Mass Effect was – and nobody can disagree – a superior product on PC over the Xbox 360 release. The idea of a PC build of a game being superior is a contrived point, I realise, but that makes it no less valid here.

Whilst I can’t speak for the Xbox 360 build, the PC and PS3 builds I saw were from two completely different worlds. The PC ran the high quality graphics you’d expect from a gaming rig at a steady frame rate of 60fps, reminding me of a smoothness comparable to Patrick Stewart’s glorious head. Whereas the PS3 was – for lack of a better description – painful to observe. Textures were low, frame rate was choppy, and I was convinced that had I stood there any longer I’d eventually be turned to stone, for it was as if I was looking into the eyes of Medusa herself… Except she was holding an ugly stick… And beating herself in the face with it.

As previously stated, I didn’t get the time to check out the 360 build. My guess is that it falls somewhere in the middle, but that’s only a guess. I’m a poor guesser. I once guessed that a cat would win in a fight with a lemon… I was wrong.

Bottom line? PC is the place to be on this game. And the same will likely go for Mass Effect 2 as well. If your only option is to go for the PS3 version (and possibly 360), HAHAHAHALOLZROFLCOPTERIFFIC!1! (That’s leetspeak for, “you’re in an unfortunate situation and should probably make a sandwich to help get over your bitter disappointment”).

[On an interesting tangent, HAHAHAHALOLZROFLCOPTERIFFIC does not get flagged up by spellcheck. I believe that makes it an official word]
