I’ve been hosting the Sarcastic Gamer PlayStation Podcast along with Frawlz and PacmanPolarbear for well over a year now, so it should come as no surprise that I really like the PlayStation platform. When we started the show, we had to put up with a large amount of legitimate “crap” over things like inferior multiplatform titles, fewer exclusives, inferior online offering, etc. The list was substantial and I don’t think we’ve ever tried to hide that fact on our show. Over the course of late 2008 and 2009 things really took a turn for the better in PlayStation-land. But lately, that same sour taste has returned… and it tastes… like sh*t!
Borderlands came out on the PS3 to immediate co-op problems on the PS3… a game largely pimped for its co-op gameplay! I later got to experience a wonderful and awesome corrupted save which led to me losing about 6-7 hours of gameplay. The game got patched (both server and client side) to address the launch issues, but the reason my save got corrupted is still unaddressed as far as I know. For those of you ready to ask, no… I didn’t turn off the PS3 while the HDD indicator light was on. I think Gear Box needs to add a few more reasons to the list of things that could corrupt your game… like maybe just “Buying it for the PS3!” “Bitter much?” you may ask; yeah, I am. On a side note, I rented the 360 version to play online with friends last weekend and THAT game save isn’t corrupt and I had no co-op problems. I’m just sayin’… :-/
Beatles Rock Band is giving PS3 owners fits in Europe if they purchased the DLC. That’s just beautiful! You buy a game, like it enough to want to spend even MORE money on it, you go buy some more music and BLAMO!!! Your game no longer loads. How does something like that pass through QA? It shouldn’t. Someone screwed up and I hope a bunch of people learned a lesson.
Modern Warfare 2 just came out in case you didn’t notice. Hey, guess what? If you started playing right away, you might not get your trophies on the PS3 version. Xbox 360 version? Achievements show up as earned. WTF? Also, there have been reports of problems sending invites to other players on your friends list on the PS3. Apparently deleting the friends and adding them again fixes this, but that’s complete and utter crap! I know Sony doesn’t do this on purpose and Infinity Ward is a highly respected developer, but how does this sh*t keep happening?
Did we all quietly slip back into early 2008? We’re largely getting graphical parity between 360 and PS3… we’re mostly getting frame rate parity… but now stupid sh*t is sliding through to retail WAY too often! This kind of stuff really matters… REALLY matters!
Okay… I’ll admit it. I bought Modern Warfare 2 for the 360 so I wouldn’t have to deal with the sh*t I figured would probably be attributed to the PS3 version (and largely because I’ve had better luck actually playing with friends easily on the 360.) I feel like the PlayStation platform has been one step forward, and one step back (+/- a half a step.)
Sony, ultimately PlayStation is your brand… it’s your baby. I don’t want blame placed or fingers pointed, I want this sh*t to stop. I, as a proponent for your platform FOR YEARS, need to have confidence that buying (or recommending) a game on your system isn’t a compromise or a headache-to-be. End this sh*t… NOW!

I totally agree with you. I own both a 360 and a PS3, but play my PS3 a lot more. At the moment I can’t log into MW2 online and I am waiting for my Borderlands save to be corrupted. I also can’t get the spec-ops online co-op to work. I am wondering how stuff like this makes it through testing.
It doesn’t make it through testing. They set their release deadline, then the QA people are forced to rush through and meet the arbitrary deadline. That’s why you get buggy games at release that need patches on launch day. +
Oh yeah, lets not forget about the issues that Ghostbusters had at launch, not to mention the issues with Bayonetta.
It sounds like a lot of the problems you’re talking about are not Sony or the PS3’s problem, but rather the studios producing these games. If the problem is fixed by a PS3 patch, it’s Sony. If the problem is fixed by a studio patch, it’s the studio’s fault.
The problem really seems to come down to the fact that there is a smaller install base for PS3 and the development tools for the 360 are easier to work with. So what happens is that developers write their code to work with the 360, and then port it. But this of course means that if you do a simultaneous launch for both platforms, the PS3 is always going to be running into the deadlines more. So less time to test and work out these last bugs.
@Steve, world-wide install base is only 4-6M different (and decreasing) between the PS3 and 360 by some reports. That’s not an earth-shattering difference. With respect to the tools, sure, that’s true… BUT if they can patch/fix things shortly after launch, then IMO they could’ve fixed it shortly before launch.
@Shaha44 (I had to stop somewhere… the list is long and depressing…)
IM SO PISSED! i just got done with the single player – like 10 mins ago – and i cant play online, at all! cant even get the chance to press find game. im SO disappointed
This site is just a bunch of Xbots anyway. Uncharted 2 is the best game ever made. EVAR…
(Just thought I’d get that out of the way…)
so are you! Jokes ^_^
i’ld say it’s 50/50, half xbot and half PSfag not that i’m insulting gay people just that it’s the only PS3 fanboy insult i know.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like Naughty Dog and Insomniac do not seem to have major issues like this. How are they the only ones to come out with something and it’s not broken. Maybe other developers need to take lessons from these guys?
so resistance 2 never happened right? RIGHT?! Seems a shame when insomniac turns out not to be the perfect develpor.
I agree with the fact that games shouldn’t release broken but one issue I have with the article is that it seems directed at Sony. The problem with that is Sony doesn’t release multiplatform games, so this should be directed at lazy western developers. I mean that’s who it normally looks like is cutting corners. You have GT5 not releasing because they want to make the game perfect (Sony) and Borderlands/MW2 release with issues on both platforms at that (Not Sony Developers) So you should right an article stating “Hey lazy developers get your CRAP together NOW!
That is an awesome graphic Rothbart.
Didn’t have any MP problems with Borderlands (PS3) thank god and it seemed all right, but I was always shocked when someone was actually in my group using a mic and talking as a group, where as I imagine the 360 version is more for MPers.
I think his point is not to say that Sony is at fault here (he even said he’s not blaming Sony). The issue at hand is that the Playstation is their brand, and if they keep seeing these problems, Sony should do something to improve quality, whether it’s an extra step of QA done by Sony proper before they allow a game to be released on PS3, or subsidizing a little extra testing, Sony (if it can stop being aloof) can help correct this issue. The problem is, there’s largely a blind eye turned to these sorts of issues, which isn’t getting anything fixed.
@Draxxlith: You get it, yes, that’s EXACTLY right!
@ShanghaiSix: There could be no other graphic than that one. It’s perfect (except to meet the filesize requirements it got blurry from compression.) Picard knows it’s shit, Riker’s laughing his smug ass off under Picard’s armpit… Riker’s such an Xbot. Worf is unamused.
