PS3 Fanboys Rage over Ultra Low score for Uncharted 2

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2 has released to world wide critical acclaim. It’s charting at about a 96 on the fabled “Metacritic” review aggregator, which we all know is the last word in what is good for you. So, the game must be good. Right? However, some critics on the fringe, who have given their own opinions on Uncharted 2, have been met with wide eyed nerd rage over their ridiculously low review scores.

Raging idiotic fanboyism, or shoddy internet journalism?  Can there be a winner between the two? Find out, after the jump.

Sony’s plan to allow reviewers to post their reviews of Uncharted 2 well before the game was to be released is a great marketing ploy, in my opinion. This has borne out well for Sony this time, as Uncharted 2 reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. One of the first reviews, from the U.S. IGN office gave the game a 9.5, an overwhelmingly good score. Many other review scores trickled in after and Uncharted 2 is now the highest scoring game for the PS3 according to the review gods, Metacritic. The game has garnered 23 perfect review scores from outlets such as Giantbomb, 1up, Eurogamer and others.

Naturally, the ps3 fanboys have latched on to this game and for good reason. It’s a great game and something to hang their hat on after four years of being a whipping boy for the Nintendo and Xbox fan idiots of the world. It seems that those years have left these PS3 fanboys horribly scarred, as their patience for low review scores has virtually vanished.

Case in point, the UK IGN office recently posted their review of Uncharted 2.  In this particularly unforgiving review, the author dared to question the games shooting mechanics, slippery cover system and good, but not great melee system.  Other grievances included:

“Among Thieves’ brilliant narrative progression isn’t met with a similar evolution in gameplay and throughout the running time all that seems to change is the amount of punishment the enemy can take. One boss encounter halfway through the game pushes this philosophy to an agonizing extreme, his semi-naked torso absorbing clip after clip of rifle ammo.”

How. Dare. He.

As a result, the PS3 fanboys did what only they could. They took to the comment section to bash this awful review with the full weight of the PS3 fanboy nation. They rose up in force to confront their oppressor. Not only did they let their voice be heard, but they did it in surprisingly literate ways. For instance, EV1LD34D wrote:

Hey, Martin.

Go f**k yourself.

Poster ...Honest…Reviewer… wrote:

This review = fuck you to uncharted fans!

In the end, I think that the PS3 Fanboy nation got their point across and got it across eloquently. Do not mess with their games.  Do not even think of giving their games a low score, or you shall meet the mighty wrath of the PS3 nation. They will direct well thought out and well written retorts, extolling the virtues of the PS3 and Uncharted 2, specifically and to their dying breath. You see friends, Uncharted 2:  Among Thieves, is life. It must be protected.

Well played PS3 fanboys, well played.

Oh, by the way… IGN UK gave Uncharted 2 a 9.0.

Fucking bastards…

      Lono, You missed the point.

No one is saying that the 9 is TOO LOW for the game.

People are saying you score Uncharted2 as high as your score DLC for Halo3. Then at the same time say its the best game you’ve played.

Much like Edges “review” of the game that bashed it for not being a FPS.

no one is upset over the #. People are laughing at the idea that you score it the same as other games that aren’t on par, as cited in each review that gives it a 9.

      • will says:

        *edit*

The article is just flamebait that misses the point.

I think everyone can agree that if the issue was complaining over a 9, that it would be stupid.

But thats not the issue, and your article fails to grasp that concept.

      • Zvolen says:

And that is EXACTLY why scores shouldn’t be compared to other scores that games get and why in my opinion reviewers shouldn’t even give games a numerical score.

But then again if they didn’t what would the internet have to argue about?

    • Diortem says:

Dance, Lono’s puppets, DANCE!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHA *lightnight flashes in the back*

exactly. If he grasps the concept yet still posts this its just flamebait.

        • Lono says:

My point was that crazy people were directing personal insults like “Fuck You” because the guy dared to give the game a 9.0.

If you don’t see that, I’m sorry for you man.

    • CayennSG says:

first thing first: buy uncharted 2. buy it!

now, who cares about reviewscores? read the review and agree/disagree of the content! what are the issues that the reviewer are having? send him a mail and say you disagree of something or go to the forum of that site and speak your mind! (why you disagree with the review…)

      ps. IGN UK s*ck balls!

    • Matt_jc says:

I dont think its that great, a 9 is a very generous score in my opinion, hoping tht god of war 3 isnt a let down

    • Ha Ha Ha! Oh wow. says:

      >clip after clip of rifle ammo
Does nobody on the internet know the fucking difference between a clip and a MAGAZINE?
Clip: A device for holding a group of cartridges.
Magazine: A spring-loaded container for cartridges that may be an integral part of the gun’s mechanism or may be detachable.
A clip would be used to load an integral magazine like in a bolt-action rifle or used to fill an external magazine. A magazine is what you would insert into a gun that does not have an integrated magazine. One would not fire a “clip” of ammo from an assault rifle, one would fire a magazine.

      Get it right, people.

    • psyco skull says:

this blog made me laugh HARD!!!!!

    • Viking says:

Still impressed by Lono’s ability to bring out these comments by people :p
9.0 is a good score, and to those complaining with a 9.0 score compared to ODST, come on, don’t you have better to do? You already know if you’re going to buy the game or not. 9.0 is just 0.5 difference between this ‘outrageous’ score, and a ‘fantastic’ score.

But it’s about principles! Stupid me, the world needs to be a better place to live in, starting with game reviews with a ‘injustice’ score, hope you all get to share a Nobel Peace Award next year for your visions.

Damn, I’m going to hear it now, leave a message after the beep. Fanboy RAAAGE! (this comment was almost relevant)

    • Drew says:

You did miss the point. This article fails

    • Farko says:

      A 9 out of 10! FANBOY SMASH!

An article defending the evil low score of 9! FANBOY SMASH!

Lono was just saying that a 9 is nothing to start hurling insults over, and that fanboy rage is a all powerful reason blocker. there was no missed point, not by lono at least.

    • FrankBlack007 says:

I think IGN UK and the respective fanboys should compromise, give it a 9.5, and go back to not brushing their teeth.

    • WWII says:

Lono, what part you don’t understand that we, PS3 fanboys aren’t complaining about the 9’s? Is not about the score but what the reviewers said about the game. For an example:

      GameTrailers

They said that they couldn’t rate U2 higher than a 9.3 because the game doesn’t has any originality… Everything is fine, even the score but then he says that.

There is another reviewer, I don’t remember who, who said that Drake doesn’t leaves footprints in the snow… Are you kidding me? Because that’s so relevant to the gameplay and enjoyment of the game!

And there were another couple of reviewers saying that U2 was the first good game to actually own a PS3… They apparently forgot about MGS4, Killzone 2, LBP, inFamous, Valkyria Chronicles, Ratchet & Clank, etc.

      • Lono says:

Hi, just wanted to say that U2 doesn’t do one damn thing that is new. It’s a great game but it borrows so much, just as other games in the genre. Hell, it’s about a heavy Indiana Jones rip off as it gets, so your GT complaints don’t hold any water.

You all are taking the crazy pills. Enjoy the game and leave the crazy for something important.

    • Gadget2000 says:

I just think arguing over some random fanboys is stupid. U2 is a great game, and if its not your cup of tea then its your loss. Also a 9 is a great score no one should be complaining about. However, the sarcasm in the article was a little scathing. I know PS3 fanboys are just as bad a xbots, but Lono, let us just have this one! the next good one, feel free to bash us without mercy for our stupidity. But we need this freebie for our own collective self-esteem.

      • Diortem says:

no you dont! You have a seriously fun game! You don’t need to get retarded bacause it’s not a perfect score!

      • Lono says:

I love it. When I make fun of PS3 fandorks, I get labeled a xbot… makes me rofl. Listen to Respawn Radio this week. The only game we talked about was Demon’s Souls.

I like Uncharted 2, the morons that blast the UK IGN are fucking morons, whether I like the game or not.

Gawd, the fanboys make my job so easy.

    • Chubbaluphigous says:

You are right that the ridiculous comments show the stupidity of others, but that isn’t too hard. The general public seems to jump at the chance to act stupid.

    • name says:

really could not care less what they give games, as long as the score is justified.
and as long as reviews reflect on the quality compare to other games.

is GTA IV better than uncharted 2?
      FUCK NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so why did GTAIV get a higher review score?

and seriously enough of this “its not original”
      “its not innovative”
i really could not give a shit.
      is halo 3 innovative?
      is GTAIV innovative?
is gears of war 2 innovative?
      is bioshock innovative?
no, none of those are innovative but that did not stop them from being voted for GOTY

that argument just pisses me off something terrible because very few games are.
your bashing a game for not doing what very few games do.

do people bash movies because their not original?
theres nothing original about the dark night, but it is by far the best movie i have ever seen.

games should be reviewed on 6 things.
      1 graphics
2 sound AND AND AND sound effects, to many times i hear things like the voice acting is good the music is good but no mention of sound effects. if im playing a FPS i want to hear those bullets as they thump into bodies.
i want to feel those explosions.
      3 gameplay.
how FUN! is the game, none of this o its not original BS.
4 controls are they responsive? do they feel good? are you jumping to a pole and going through the friggin thing?
      5 replay value.
6 bugs, is the game polished, can i play it for a few hours without it freezing on me?
      simple.
      no?
seriously the next review i read complaining that said game is not innovative or original im going to leap through my screen and rip the persons lungs out!
enough, games should be reviewed for things they HAVE not things they DONT

      • Lono says:

Ok, so what’s wrong with the IGN review? First of all, that’s your opinion. Second, games and their review scores aren’t compared to each other, but rather given a score in a vacuum, so frankly, your “GTA isn’t better waaah, waaah” bull crap doesn’t hold water.

Yet still, a lot of huffing and puffing, but no real reason for the vitriol over a 9.0 review. What was wrong with the IGN review?

        • name says:

there nitpicking thats whats wrong with it.
uncharted 2 does nothing wrong and gets picked to hell but halo 3 ODST does almost everything wrong and is praised as the second coming of christ.
you can not blame a game for not being original because games have been coming out for how long?
its hard for one to be original, almost every idea has been done.
batman AA is no where near original but its the 3rd best game ive played this year, same goes for infamous.
same as movies, what movie is original?
          the dark night?
          transporters 3?
          transformers 2?
almost everything has been done, a form of entertainment does not need to be original to be a good game.
gears 2 for example that style has been done to hell, but its still my favorite 360 game.
and uncharted 2 does more to innovate than others do.
how many other games have so many epic action scenes?
what game has a building crash to the ground while your in it?
thats a form of innovation in itself.
ive never played a game that has had my heart pounding from start to finish, and thats exactly what uncharted 2 has.

im sick of this fine tooth comb attitude to ps3 game reviews.
batman AA has many issues but there not nitpicked in the review.
halo ODST has many many many issues but there not nitpicked in the review.
god fallout 3 on release i could not play on my ps3 for more than an hour or it would freeze but IGN scuffed it off as if it never happens.

but than KZ2, infamous and uncharted 2 come out and each review has gone over them with a magnifying glass trying to find its flaws.
uncharted 2 is the best game i have ever played, anyone that can not see that and appreciate it.
well there in the wrong industry.
if uncharted 2 deserves a 9 than every single game released in the past few years deserves no more than a 7 thats how good uncharted 2 is.
if this does not deserve a 10 nothing does.

    • cynicalmonkey says:

to all PS3 fanatic defending the undefendable position

Can i point out that uncharted 2 has not actually been released in the UK yet so anyone commenting and telling the reviewer to f**k off have either.

      1) not played the game so have no reason whatsoever to believe they won’t hold the same gripes.

      2) gone to the UK site from a country where it has come out so are either a) trolling the internet for U2 reviews so they can comment on them or b) going there through choice because they like the review style, which they then decide they don’t like because the reviewer has different opinions to them.

none of the above puts them in a particularly reasonable light and unless EV1LD3AD works for naughty dog why should he care if the reviewer had gripes (although if i was a games designer i would spend all my time on critics blogs telling them to F off if they didn’t like my game!).

oh and for the record to the guy who is above me the dark knight didn’t even get nominated for a best picture oscar so until you link me to your long and scathing comment on the academy awards forums you sir are a hypocrite!

    • Ognawk says:

That review would get destroyed if it went up on N4G!

Woe betide anyone who gives Uncharted 2 less than a 9.5 or dare to criticise it, because the PS3 fanboys will come and bring their mad typing and reasoning skills to the table.

Certainly got my morning off to a great start!

    • Lorrie says:

      Lono,
While the hate your recieving for this article is stupid and you in no way diserve to get it. Also the Hate the fanboys always give to reviewers not giving their favourite systems a 15/10 I can sort of see a point they arn’t saying so elegantly.

Why would a reviwer complain a TPS isnt a FPS… Though Halo would be cool as a TPS, seriously think about it guys! Gears of Halo.
Also Uncharted 2 doesnt do anything new but it does everything fantasticly, I don’t believe that a game should be punished for not doing anything new. Something like Killzone didnt really do anything new but it was still fantastic.

Also for everyone reading this dont compare game scores, its really stupid and unless a single review has reviewed both games then the score is discountable.

    • Nonmelodic says:

I agree with Lono; while uncharted 2 is a great game thier is nothing original about it.

And WWII, thier is actually a point about drake not leaving footprints, the only thing going for the game is the fact it had amazing graphics and animation. The gun combat, while fun isn’t the best by and respect, neither is the story. And since it features no originality then the only thing it has is graphics and animation (Like I said before) then the fact something that simple is overlooked is a problem.

And to Lorrie, well if every game did everything really well but nothing original, ever..Then well we still be playing fucking pong wouldn’t we? It’s great having a game like this but every game loses marks for not be original.

And remember everyone, you can’t comapre review scores between any 2 games really, take halo 3. That game came out years ago, standards are different now. Are you saying every game ever made should be re-reviewed every month? Which means most games released over a year ago can probably never make a 9 or higher.

And with the halo dlc score? Well that’s dlc dammit! You don’t review a psp game the same a ps3 game!! Otherwise you could never comment a psp game had good graphics!

    • harpox2 says:

And just last night I was thinking to myself how I was already missing the irrational and completely crazy opinions of Halo fanboys that SG drew out with their articles on ODST. Thanks PS3 fanboys, thanks for making my day.

    • Curious Orange says:

      Jesus, fanboys are fucking retarded…

A reviewer is well within their rights to criticise a game for its lack of originality, if games didn’t try new things, we’d all still be playing Pong. A perfect 10 is the sort of thing that should only be given to games that are full-on revolutionary, that redefine the way that we think about games in one or more ways. I haven’t played U2, so frankly, I don’t know if it does, but the consensus appears to be ‘Probably not’, if it did for you, groovy, but a game being really, really fun doesn’t make it a 10.

Also, criticising lazy design elements such as non-persistent snow footprints that might seem very petty, but when a game is very good, you’ve got to nit-pick, and little things like that can break the immersion for some people, which is a cardinal sin for many reviewers.

And then of course there’s the old chestnut that reviewing anything is SUBJECTIVE. It’s that person’s opinion, if you don’t like it, well who the hell cares, no-one ever died because a game got a bad review, if you think it’s a 10, good for you, it’s obviously really impacted you, as great games should, but that doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone.

All in all. Grow up kiddies, he’s fucking with you, and you’re giving him and us so much amusement from it!

LOL. This pissing contest is awesome. Oh no, someone didn’t score the game as high as another. Such a tragedy.

If this is something that is that important to you then there’s seriously something screwed up in your head. It’s someones opinion of a game. Nothing more. And has no real weight in the world. With all that’s f’d in the world this is what people get all up in arms about. Ridiculous.

    • Timewarp says:

i edmit. I am a PS3 fanboy but 9.0? That’s the best IGN can master for a PS3 game so like a horriable Dr.Cox we should be gratefull for IGN at least trying to put their XBOT fanboism persona in a box long enough to try some effection for a PS3 exclusive though don’t count on MAG getting anything higher then 5.0, that box will snap open by then

this reviewer is an idiot though, he says one boss took tons of ammo through him yet i can’t begin to count the amount of games, PS3, XBOX, Wii and multiformat games that contain juggernaut like enemies who just don’t quit despite having their bodies blown to bits by ammo, the points this man makes are invalid but i’m stuck between the two sides here.

I can see why PS3 fanboys would be annoyed being one myself but at the same time like lono said it’s insulting to get on the defence becasue a reviewer “Dared” to give uncharted 2 a 9.0, i have this image of a fat ugly PS3 fanboy sitting down on he’s laptop thinking “That son of a! How dare he! I must call my friends and insult him then preceed to review ODST a 0.0 for this betrayal” wait…the screen’s relfective that’s me…….

IGN are XBOTS but honestly, 9.0 is a good score for a PS3 game so i don’t care and as usually the other fanboys for the PS3 show their intelligence. NON-EXSISTANT

    • Timewarp says:

Sorry to DP but this really got my angry and furious against the PS3 fanboys “It’s because you’re from the UK that country is f**king communist” WHAT?! My country is a communist country becasue this guy didn’t get the score he was looking for. I swear the only reason IGN UK gave uncharted 2 a 9.0 is becasue unlike IGN US they had the guts to review uncharted 2 unbiased and fairly without fearing what the fanboys would think.

I was ok when they were just upset but to get as far as to insult a whole nation based on the opioun on a UK games reviewer? My opioun of americans just went up from Friendly Nation to stubborn fat morons. Proof me wrong americans becasue this one guy soon enough might just be scorched into my brain as example A of the typical american.

    • PS3 Fanboy says:

If you guys love this game SO much then why are you on the internet posting ridiculous comments instead of actually playing the game.

    • Landen says:

Did anyone else think about what the low score cost IGN in free marketing revenue? Because of the 9.0 rating, IGN was left out of the multi-million dollar television ad campaign. All of their lesser competition had a second or two in prime time many times over. I think about it every time I see the commercials. If I was the one signing checks at IGN and missed out on appearing on Free television commercials airing every 10 minutes because of a couple game reviewers, I’d have some questions. Please don’t come back with the whole “you mean IGN should give good scores to the companies who have huge marketing budgets?” argument – that’s obvious. I’m just saying it’s a component I haven’t seen mentioned and I can promise it’s been discussed within the cyber walls of IGN. That score single handedly cut IGN out of a campaign they would never be able to afford and I hope the reviewers weren’t just “having a bad day”.
