While this story is over a week old, I let it simmer. I was hoping that someone would come back and debunk the information as PR spin, because to me, it just seems improbable.
Famitsu, one of Japan’s most prolific gaming magazines, has given a perfect four-reviewer 40/40 score to the Xbox 360 version of Bayonetta (the PS3 got docked two points for framerate issues). The magazine has only given out 11 other perfect scores during its run, including games like Final Fantasy XII, Dragon Quest IX, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time. To give you a point of reference, Famitsu also gave Uncharted 2 and God of War 2 scores of 37/40.
Okay, I understand games like Final Fantasy XII and Dragon Quest IX, where the entire country loses its damn mind on launch day; these two series are Japanese national phenomena. You know you reach epic status when schools are giving kids the day off because administrators knew so many were just planning on staying home anyway to play the new Dragon Quest, while a Japanese company actually instituted “Dragon Quest Vacation Leave”, giving employees nine days off to play the game.
And MGS: 4 and Zelda: OOT, got it. But a spinoff of Devil May Cry? That game didn’t get a perfect score from Famitsu. Granted, before Platnium Games existed, they were Clover Games, who also put out God Hand, Okami, and Viewtiful Joe, all critically acclaimed titles.
I played the demo at PAX and seen trailers…am I missing something? I mean, it could always be about S-E-X. Lead designer Hideki Kamiya claimed they focused the game around Bayonetta’s “sexy attacks”, with our shapeshifting demon slayer chaining combos together with only her long black hair covering her body. They say sex sells, and this coming from the land of tentacle porn, Rapelay, and this place, it would make sense that a whip-wielding, gun-toting dominatrix tops the charts. Does anyone else feel this strongly about this game? With games like God of War 3 on the horizon?
The game released in Japan on the 29th and is set to launch in the US on January 5th, UK on the 8th (see how I put that UK part in? You’re welcome).
