Is Modern Warfare 2 such a must-have game without competitive multiplayer?

MW2

Modern Warfare 2 is easily one of the most talked about games coming out this Holiday, and with some damn good reasons. From every video and piece of information that comes out, it looks like Infinity Ward is making the right decisions and improving upon everything that could use updating from CoD4. They’ve also proved they learned a thing or two about co-op with the Special Ops mode.

My only issue is: I don’t care about the competitive multiplayer, and I find it interesting that my desire to play the game as soon as possible changes so radically because of it.

As far as single player and co-op gameplay go, it looks like you’ll only be able to squeeze out around 12 hours of action. Once you’re done with that, there aren’t many options left besides replaying them for achievements at the higher difficulty. When you compare that to titles like Dragon Age: Origins and the co-op block party of Borderlands, I just don’t think it stacks up as well.

While twelve hours is pretty lengthy for a CoD game (and 6 of those hours are straight co-op, which is awesome,) there’s not much Infinity Ward can cram into the campaigns to make it look like a contender for single player greatness when something like Dragon Age comes out a week before it. Before the comments start, I know MW2 can never stack up against single-player only games because Infinity Ward has such an amazing multiplayer to work on. Plus, 15-25 hours of FPS single player gameplay on the CoD4 engine? That sounds like it would drag on for a long time. I think they’ve hit the sweet spot at 6-10 hours per campaign.

I do wish Infinity Ward added in some “Survival” mode along the lines of Horde, Firefight, and Nazi Zombies, but I can almost see why they didn’t. Their Spec-Ops mode fits in almost the same pocket, and it certainly fits the modern scene of the game better than fighting waves of zombies or crazed soldiers. Then again, Nazi Zombies didn’t fit the WW2 setting one bit, but Treyarch threw that into the game and it was quite cool. Infinity Ward could have ripped that off of them for minimal time and effort, but I suppose they wanted to build their assets themselves, which I can commend.

I definitely plan to buy Modern Warfare 2 at some point down the line, probably once I finish up with Dragon Age: Origins or Assassin’s Creed 2. But since I’m not going to rocking the online, I feel I don’t have to be there on day one and I can wait until my library thins out before diving into the trenches.

So I turn the conversation over to you, the readers. Are you in the same position?  Maybe you’re part of the majority and you’re absolutely stoked to crank through the story then hop online – which is great! Perhaps you’re someone who read the headline and the first two paragraphs, then you scrolled down to lay down the hate on me. If you’re that guy, you should read a bit more. It’s not long, I’ll wait.

Good, welcome to the party!

Modern Warfare 2 looks like it will be everything CoD4 is and more. While no one can say yet if it will be as popular for as long, it’s safe to say that the launch will be quite an event. However, there are a great number of single player and co-op games hitting the store shelves this holiday, and if that’s more your bag, it might not be a bad idea to hold off until the frenzy for MW2 has calmed down before putting the $65 down for it.

You raise a good question that I’m gonna need some time to maul over because I think it brings up a far more interesting question of, “just how good is the FPS genre without some sort of MP (be it competitive or co-op).

But for now I just wanted to say that its awesome to read a comment/article on a game the author isn’t totally gaga over (admitedly I am gaga over MW2) without the lame and flippant, “I just don’t see what the big deal is with this game or the hype the fans have for its release.” statement.

Indeed! I could have popped up and said “Modern Warfare 2 sucks! It’s just a reskinned CoD4 and I don’t know why people care!”

And I probably would’ve gotten a few thousand more pageviews, but no way. I think MW2 will be an awesome game, and if you’re in to the MP portion, then you’ve got a hell of a hit to look forward to.

can’t be bothered with MW2. Though it seems all my favourite games or most of them are being pushed back meaning i have to wait now for games like dead rising 2.

Though i’m not concerned i’ll be on uncharted 2, ratchet and clank, brutal legand and assasins creed 2 while your all playing modern warfare 2. (Has anyone noticed most of the good titles out this year were sequals?)

I’m also a good deal more excited for the campaign and Spec Ops than I am for the multiplayer.

I do plan to pick it up later on, maybe from playswitch, but I can definitely wait.

I’m kinda a fanboy of MW 2 so I have to say you buy it for the MP the story is gonna be cool but the MP and leveling up getting new guns upgrades… is why it’s fun if you don’t like it then it’s not worth buying

Yup. The story in CoD games has always been pretty awesome – but once you experience it, that’s it. Then their multiplayer is top notch, so that’s where the replayability comes in.

I do wag my finger at them for not putting the leveling system in for the Special Ops mode. Even if it were separate, it would have been cool.

what are you a noob the multiplayer is the real beef of the game

Something tells me you’ve never played against the author online…

I’ve been around the block in CoD4 multiplayer. In fact, it’s the reason I no longer play. You did hit the nail on the head – multiplayer is the reason to buy the game, and that’s the whole point of the article. :D

I’m not a big FPS fan I dont enjoy them too much and if I’m honest, I’m fairly rubbish at them, but I am tempted by this game. Will I buy it for £55 on release day? Hell no. Will I wait until I’m done with Dragon Age, then rent it, potter around getting shot in the head over and over, get bored and take it back? Almost certainly!
