Wow.  This video just dropped on twitter by http://twitter.com/fourzerotwo and htp://twitter.com/Infinityward. It’s a YouTube Video “PSA” for the Fight Against Grenade Spaming starring Phillies Pitcher Cole Hamels.

I can’t believe that a company such as Infinity Ward would put a video out that basically condones the use of the word “fag” by every douche bag on Xbox Live.

As if the anonymous hate  it isn’t bad enough, Infinity Ward?  Now you’re basically saying it’s okay to call people Fags?  I highly doubt that was your intention, but come on… Are you kidding me? It would be like using an acronym that spelled a derogatory word for a Black person or Asian or Jewish person. I could see something like this done by some dumbass fan site, but seriously.

Stuff like this simply shouldn’t be produced by a company like Infinity Ward.  Is the controversy worth it? I don’t think so.

Catch the video while you can folks, once the Activision legal eagles catch wind of this, this video will go away faster than a fart in the night.

UPDATE: I received a message from Robert Bowling, IW community manager via Twitter a short time ago.  Here is his direct quote:

“ Wanted to apologize for my endorsement of video. I shared it due to the core gag but inadvertently endorsed the slur, for that I pulled it”

      Okay, two things. One, I am not blinded by the fact that it’s Infinity Ward. They are a game company, and I haven’t been getting as hyped as a lot of people have recently about the game, so I am not just letting it go because I think MW2 will be like ‘Halo Jesus’. Two: Okay, I am not trying to “give them a pass”. Was it a bad choice for them? Yes, it probably was not the best idea. Will it harm the sales of MW2, or hurt them in the long run in any way? No. So I can see why some particularly sensitive people would be offended, but regardless of whether or not some people are offended, I don’t think it will turn into the giant controversy you think it will.

        We live in a PC society whether we like it or not so drawing attention to a game like this is a terriable idea and i’m extremely surprised that activision would allow a video that condones discrimitive language.

    I rather like how you go after a possible acronym shown for maybe a second or two at the end that spells out a derogatory term instead of the blatant glorification of an illegal substance at the beginning.

    One is illegal, and the other is a word. A bad word, yes, but just a word. Had they used the actual word in the video, I’d agree with you, but they didn’t. They just put the slogan up at the end, then you lapped it up, wrote a post, and sent links and free advertising across the internet.

    All they did was make a minute long video that has more to do with weed, pussies, and grenades than it has to do with gay rights.

    I just realized that sounds quite rude.

      There is, however, a difference between using a reference to an illegal substance and using an offensive slur. The issue is not knowing what IW’s intent was. They could have been appealing to the masses with the word or they could have, like you said, been attempting to associate use of the word with idiots online.

      Thank you, Blinkin. That’s the point I was trying to get across in my tired and toothache-reliever riddled stupor.

      The way they posted the word, even if it is the title, isn’t going to make the normal decent people of the world use the word in a derogatory fashion. The people that WOULD use it that way are going to any way.

      As for getting up in arms about it.. It’s not our fight. If the people it concerns wants our support, I’ll give it 100%, but let them decide. Stirring the pot when there are very few eventual circumstances seems silly. The game will come out and it will sell millions.

      In the short term the video will likely be pulled and we will wait and see who picks up the pitchforks.

    Wow, I’m very conflicted here. On one side, I love that Cole Hamels did a MW2 promo because the Phillies kick ass, although Cole is in a slump and is pitching tomorrow night (I’ll be at game 5 baby).

    On the other, this is very unprofessional of IW. They could have easily did this promo without the “unintentional” acronym. Do you guys remember when Bungie got barked at by some kid’s mom just because they posted photos of the team drinking booze while playing Halo 3 ? I can’t imagine how IW is going to get reamed for this one.

    And it sounds like Denis Wettmann needs to work for IW.
