In Dead Space Extraction, it’s kill or be killed. You have to think fast, with a finger ever at the trigger. Of course, it’s important to make every shot count. You don’t want to get caught with your pants down, forced to reload with a bevy of foes bearing down.

For those having some difficulty surviving the Necromorph-infested halls of the USG Ishimura, I’ve put together a handy little guide to ease the pain. Even if you’re an ace shot, you might find that some of my tips push your star rating to a new height. So, as Black Label Society singer and guitarist Zakk Wylde would say, fire it up.

1) Stasis is your friend

Don’t neglect it. Stasis is without doubt one of the most useful technologies in Extraction. To me, it’s more vital to success than many of the actual weapons. It doesn’t deal direct damage, but it can pull your ass out of a sticky situation. I like to “freeze” the Leapers, as they are the fastest and most agile Necromorphs in the game. It’s also a good way to keep Lurkers off of your back.

You have three modules that recharge pretty quickly, so there’s no need to skimp. Use Stasis, and use it often.

2) Use Kinesis as a weapon

Kinesis is infinite, so why not use it to your advantage? As with Stasis, consider it an extension of your arsenal. By launching a fuel tank into a crowded area, you can off multiple enemies without firing a single shot. A great way to conserve ammunition. You can also sever the volatile limbs of the Exploders, rendering them pretty harmless, while also creating powerful projectiles. The point is: Don’t limit yourself. Be cognizant of your surroundings, and any objects that can be used against attackers.

3) Never waste an opportunity to reload

Ensure that all weapons have full clips at all times. No excuses. Even if you’re only down a single round, fill up as soon as possible. Better safe than sorry. You never know when that extra shot will come in handy. Could even mean the difference between four stars, and five.

4) Aim for perfect reloads

This one piggybacks off of number three. Whenever you need to refill a clip, look for the small gray arc within the larger reticle. Stop the gauge within that space to execute a perfect reload. This time-saving mechanism can be a lifesaver, since you can’t shoot and restock your weapon simultaneously. There is no reason to let the meter complete a full rotation when you can reload in less than half the time.

5) Abuse the Line Gun in congested halls

The Line Gun is one of the most powerful armaments in Extraction, and its wide blasts can clear out a gaggle of Necromorphs in a matter of seconds. This piece is my personal safety blanket. I never start a chapter without it. Combined with Stasis, the Line Gun is utterly devastating, as it can sever multiple appendages at once. Most enemies don’t survive one shot though.

6) The Rivet Gun is solid, but don’t neglect the rest of your arsenal

Use the Hydrogen Torch Flamethrower against Swarmers, the Pulse Rifle against the boss monsters, and the Contact Beam whenever you want to make something disappear immediately. Also, refer to tip five. The Line Gun: It’s powerful as shit. That would make a great shirt.

7) Focus on the limbs

This one is obvious, but it’s certainly worth mentioning. The name of the game is dismemberment – not literally of course. Shooting an enemy in the torso isn’t fruitful. A headshot won’t put a Necromorph down either. First, you should focus on reducing the mobility of the most dangerous assailants. For bi-pedal threats, aim for a leg, then go after their knife-like arms. The upper limbs are far more dangerous, but an enemy can still charge when its lower appendages are intact. However, if you eliminate a leg, the foe has to drag itself toward your position, making it far slower and much easier to kill.

When tackling Leapers, the arms should be your primary concern.

8) Above all else: Don’t panic

Easier said than done, right? Just remember, your ammo is useless if it doesn’t hit its mark.

Well, that’s all I got. If you have any helpful tips, be sure to add them in the comment section below.
