This Thursday the PSP Go will finally hit the market. If your one of the PSP faithful, one of the gamers out there who has stuck with the PSP through all its various incarnations, the release of the PSP Go has got to be a little bittersweet. Sorta like getting the Christmas present you always wanted, only you have to let Santa pistol whip and rob you first. Ok, maybe that IS a bit much…but only a just a bit.
If your a die hard PSP fan like myself, you’ve been waiting for something like the PSP Go for a long time. After watching the original PSP 1000 get torn to pieces by a bunch of unrepentant pirating jackals; enjoying the short run the PSP 2000 had despite facing most of the same problems as the PSP 1000 and finally scratching your head when the PSP 3000 (aka “why did they bother?”) was released; the arrival of the PSP Go seems like a blessing.
A $250 blessing at that. For just an extra $50 you can go out and grab yourself a 120GB PS3 Slim, which is a pretty small amount of money considering just how much more bang for your buck you’ll get with the new PS3. Not that I am really all that upset at the PSP Go’s price point; I expected it to be high. Despite never once regretting buying any of the various PSP models I have owned to date, I can’t help but wish we had gotten the PSP Go, which is hardly a quantum leap in technology, sooner.
Still a day one purchase for me, despite the price. I started saving up the moment it stopped being a rumor. 16GB of flash memory is pretty sweet, as is the slicker and smaller design compared to my original PSP 1000. Really though, I am buying the PSP Go because it does not use UMD’s. I have as much love for UMD’s as I have for that creepy guy who always touches the food in the cafeteria or that jerk at work who always drinks the last of the coffee in the morning and does not start another pot. I hate you Steve.
UMD’s were/are flimsy, inconvenient, battery devouring crimes against digital nature and if they were actually given a grave, I’d dance a Last BoyScout style jig on it.
So money aside, I am pretty hyped for Thursday. 225 games will be available for download from day one, including a whole slew of titles already available on UMD, as well as PS1 titles formatted for the PSP. Most of the big name classics like God of War: Chains of Olympus, Star Wars: Battlefront II, Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite and Daxter are just waiting to be purchased…again.
There are also a few brand new titles to look forward to like MotorStorm Arctic Edge, PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, and the uber hyped and long awaited Gran Turismo.
I’m not going to delve into the who retailer vs. PSP Go debate. My heart just bleeds for the retailers who think the sky is falling. I remember all those hugs and good times we have shared over the years…oh wait. Retail outlets WILL be selling PSN Game Cards for downloadable games.
Something that is irritating some gamers, and for all intents and purposes making the PSP Go a fair bit more expensive, is the fact that North Americans will not get a free digital copy of PSP games they already own on UMD. European upgraders will be able to download three games from a specific list for free however.
Does that suck? Sure it does. Is it the end of the world…or even unexpected? Not really. Anyone with a lick of sense knew that was how the cookie would crumble a long time ago and took the necessary steps. Despite the constant urge to obliterate my collection of UMD games the minute I found out I no longer needed them, I instead found plenty of people interested in buying my old UMD’s, for any number of reasons. Sure I did not get back what I payed, but I got a hell of a lot more than any GameStop trade-in would nab me. On top of new games like Gran Turismo, there are about 15 games that I will re-purchase in digital form for the PSP Go.
So I can’t wait for Thursday; it has been a long time coming. I wonder how long we’ll have to wait, or how many versions we’ll have to suffer through, before Sony gets around to giving us another analog stick…

Sucker, sony must love you.
i really didn’t except sony to turn their back on the whole redownload idea. Thought i’ld be getting my old games back but it seems i won’t so now i’m not sure if i even want the PSP Go! Might as well get it now, my brother wants one and as for a part time job i’m doing for the royal mail in a few months i might as well get the PSP Go and a PSN card so i can download some stuff.
Too expensive for my taste… in sweden its 60% more expensive than the 3000 model. And the launch price is 3000SEK and thats the same price of a PS3 slim around here…. common Sony whats up with the priceing?
Is there some logic behind why North America doesn’t get free digital backups and Europe does? Not complaining, I know they get hosed with a much higher frequency when it comes to this stuff, but I’m just wondering if they ever explained themselves.
hey normal it’s us they get screwed over. But i see your point smellypirate dosen’t make much sense, is this some differant paralell universe where the SCEA sucks and the SCEE are awesome? Becasue if so then awesome for us brits!
I wonder if the reason for the deal in Europe has to do with the exchange rate and the price the PSP-GO is going to cost in some Euro nations (see CayennSG’s post).
Nice, love the post. Yup north america will get screwed but it was expected. I did not buy the old psp’s but I have been waiting. And if your waiting for that 2nd analog ha its going to be 2 years when that damn psp2 comes out. And then yay ps2 games on a psp2. Time is comming just got to wait like chumps
