PS3 Backwards Compatibility: Will it, won’t it?

PS3BC

There’s nothing I despise more than a company not being straight about a rumor that is nothing but good news for them. Price cuts are fine, since the companies don’t want people waiting to buy a system, but software updates? They should be straight with us about that from the get-go.

I’m planning to buy myself a PS3 quite soon, but I’ve decided that I’m going to buy an 80 gig with backwards compatibility from eBay. I never really had a PS2, so being able to play the many games I missed would greatly increase the value of the system. Then the rumor started spreading that Sony wants to add backwards compatibility to their firmware.

Well what is it, Sony?

You have absolutely nothing to gain from keeping information like this close to your chest. In fact, announcing this functionality soon would net you a sale for a brand new PS3 slim instead of me getting one second-hand on eBay, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who will bite.

Coming out and announcing this as truth would probably increase their sales by a healthy amount, and that’s not mentioning the oodles of money they could make by selling PS2 games on the store. On the other side, having this rumor sitting out there just after the release of a new console SKU could easily make a lot of people like me wary about purchasing their system. I’m certainly not willing to buy a PS3 Slim without BC, and now I’m even wary about buying a used 80 gig.

Nice job, Sony, you made me hesitate to buy your console. Brilliant strategy.

Well they have said there won’t be a backwards compatibility update……. so I don’t know what the point of this article is. If there really ISN’T gonna be an update, what are they supposed to say other than denying the rumor? People just assume Sony is lying about it for no reason.

Also, announcing such a thing too early would cause a slowdown in PS2 sales…

When did they come out and say that there will absolutely be no backwards compatibility software update added to the PS3 firmware? I’ve heard them say “we have no plans” and “we’re not interested.” But there have been plenty of times that the opposite of those happens – Especially with the recent speculation of the PS2 titles soon to become available on the PSN store. Backwards Compatibility is needed for that, and it’s almost free money – which would give the Sony execs a quick reason to turn their opinion around.

As for the reason for the article, I wanted to vent. :D

I’m in your exact same position. I have some old PS2 games I wouldn’t mind being able to play but I want to be able to play them on the next gen console. 360 can play a lot of xbox games. Wii can play gamecube. So why can’t Sony make PS3 do the same as the competitors?

Im going aginst the grain and say, that at this stage of life in the current gen systems, it shouldnt matter if its backward or not. Why spend the money if your Sony?

      Follow me a little….

#1 The games that people would want to play could be rebranded, and tooled for HD TV’s IE. god of war collection

#2 This was a important topic, when a console is in its first 2 years of life. At which point all ps3’s were BC. Not so much almost 4 years in, why? Because there are a ass ton of games that are now out for this gen, and that “most” (used loosely) don’t even use the BC

#3 Following MS lead, the # 1 game played from the orginal xbox is Halo2. 97 % of it. But look at what that has caused, It has forced MS to cap the friends list at 100, because of Halo2… Also look at what MS also did…. they don’t even advertise their system as BC because…. you guessed it, their # 1 games are available via download. And IMO should be what sony should be pushing for.

It boggles my mind that this is still a factor in a console purchuse 3-4 years in.

i’m sure sony don’t know how to make the PS3 backwards compatably. What’s sony suppose to say “we’re giving you something that our technician’s don’t know how to bring you” i couldn’t give a crap to be honest, it comes when it comes and if it dosen’t then who really cares? You’ll play one PS2 game then go back to buying PS3 games becasue their tons more awesome.

What i want is naughty dog to confirm if there’s an uncharted 3 being planned and yes among thiefes isn’t even out but we all know it’ll be the almighty god of games becasue it’s nolan north and he’s awesomesauce.

Forget backwards compatibility (b.c.)! There is no reason to play Ps2 games now when there are so many good titles on the ps3. If you really want to play ps2 games get a used console its cheap! So tired of this discussion with b.c. how many really use that function?

    • I think Sony is going to try to milk us for more money by re-releasing the PS2 games thru the PSN. Like the God of War collection coming out. They want you to spend another 20$ a game rather than just pop in your old disc.

I know having another system clutters up a home theater, but the Ps2 is only 100$ now. If someone is really jonesing for some PS2 action, they can just get one of those.

    • Mr Snaffles says:

I am now finally sure I made the right choice in rejecting a slim and getting a launch 60gb!
The only PS2 games I could see myself downloading are ones with local splitscreen, because there really aren’t any this gen.. – Timesplitters FTW!

Even though Sony’s PR department is denying that BC will return the vert FACT that Sony has patented emulation software and the Sega has leaked info on Ps2 games being sold on PSN, pretty much have me believing that BC will most definatly return. Consumers have been demanding this” essential feature” and if Sony wants more market share, they will listen.
Sony bring back BC for Ps2 games.
      No BC is BS.
