Some of you probably read my mini-rant yesterday about Sony not being straight with us about their backwards compatibility plans. Well, it looks like I spoke too soon. Mere minutes before typing up this post, I got an exclusive interview with them on the show floor, and they released some juicy details just for Sarcastic Gamer.
Looks like the backwards compatibility is coming in not just one, but two succulent flavors.
To coincide with its 7 year anniversary, Sony will be releasing a number of Sega CD games onto the Playstation store on October 15th! The games will run you a measly $30 each, and of course will be playable on your PSP (but not the PSP-Go.) They’re keeping a number of these titles close to their chest, but they did spill the beans that classics such as Night Trap and Ground Zero: Texas would be available from day one.
I did say two flavors, didn’t I?
The more exciting news is that on the same day, the PS3 will receive both backwards compatibility and a number of Philips CD-I games on the Playstation store. Mario and Zelda are going to be on a Sony platform! Most of the rare classics from the CD-I will be making their appearance for just $47 each on the 15th. This includes Hotel Mario, Link: The Faces of Evil, and Zelda’s Adventure.
They didn’t have any information about Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon, but I hope that’s just because they’re still working on the emulation. I can’t see them launching such an awesome service without such a prevalent game on the console being available.
I have to say that this cemented my decision to get a Playstation 3 as soon as possible. I can’t wait to dig into some Hotel Mario again. Ah, the old days.

Ha Ha. I like Fiction Fridays. The circle is now complete; CD-I games is what people of all systems have been wanting since before those systems came out. This spells doom for all others.
I thought people just wanted crap they could afford.
I’m stoked for this cuz I picked up some CDI games at the swap meat last month thinking they where something else. I cant wait.
Wow, Night Trap on the PSP! I was trying to figure out how the game could get worse. Didn’t think of that one. Now how about Dragon’s Lair for the Game and Watch?
knew it was too good to be true. I mean the backwards compatiablity not the crappy games. Good thing i remember what happened the last time i fell for a fiction friday.
