I wasn’t even close to prepared for the 20 minutes I spent playing Brutal Legend on the show floor at PAX yesterday. From the word “Go” (and just after what seemed like a ridiculously long loading screen) Tim Shafer and his team suck you into a world where guitars shoot lightning and hot rods grow out of the ground.
There hasn’t been a game, ever, that caused me to involuntarily YELP during my initial exposure like Brutal Legend did. Controls are smooth, cameras perfected, music tuned, and the view is gorgeous. The writing for the game is hysterical and Jack Black was the perfect choice for the lead role. Until I actually played Brutal Legend, I thought it to be overhyped by a few ticks on the Richter scale. No longer.
Brutal Legend deserves all of the attention it’s carving out for itself, and then some. Mark my words, this is the type of game you get tattooed on your forehead. Notice I said YOU…. not me.
