MAG Beta – The next big thing in gaming, or a cruelly crafted practical joke?

Sony sent out 10,000 Beta codes, and this is everyone that successfully got in.

Sony sent out 10,000 Beta codes, and this is everyone that successfully got in.

Back when I was in college, I invited a friend over to my apartment a few weeks after we moved, not having told him we had relocated. He barged through the door, as was his custom, only to find the startled young Mexican family that had replaced us. This was a funny prank. The MAG Beta is not.

I was elated when I secured a MAG Beta code two weeks ago from someone who went to PAX, and I eagerly fired up my PS3 to sink my teeth into it. Maybe this was the taste I needed to find out if I have what it takes to be a game tester. That, or MAG is simply the working title for Zipper Interactive’s addition into the Rhythm Game genre: “Broken-Upgrade-and-Install-System-Hero”.

Since I got the code, I have tried three times to get myself into the Beta and play. I have succeeded in starting the game from the XMB (yay, I’m not a vegetable). Once in the game, I am told that update data is being downloaded from the server…something around 2996 MB worth of data, to be exact. Now, there is no estimation of how long this will take, so, for the purposes of this article, my rudimentary math skills will have to sufice: about 15 days.

I am hesitant to leave my PS3 on overnight, but if it will net me an early piece of the gigantic splendor that promises to be MAG, I will give it a shot.

Three times.

Failing miserably each time.

I wake in the morning, turn on my TV only to find some message about there being a network error, and the download has stopped. It’s not like I can pick up where I left off; it’s as if the download never even started. I feel like I’m at some twisted carnival game where I am tossing a baseball into a milk bottle, but the baseball is now a beach ball, and the milk bottle is a ball-point pen.

POP…SSSSSSSSSSSS. Such is the sound of my deflated MAG dreams. And that creepy bearded carny-clown keeps laughing at me…why did I sign up for this again?

I’m beginning to think that MAG doesn’t stand for Massive Action Game after all. Multiple Anal Grenades would be a more accurate description.

Finally got the massive patch, and yes, I had to restart several times. I think my being on Xbox Live playing COD4 multiplayer was causing it some grief or something, because a half hour in, I would click over to check on it and find the whole “network error” problem.

The beta’s not too bad, but I can’t help thinking that they’re just going to wipe everything and I’m going to have to start over again anyways, so…

There has been download issues for a lot of people. I didn’t experience any myself. I got it downloaded in under an hour. Zipper has identified the problem, and is working to fix it. When I got to play on Thursday, all was smooth. I did notice that the download speed dropped by more than half as soon as I turned on my 360.

I wish I could give you my code, all the game does is taunt me.

    • I admit it did take me a few days to finish that big download, but after that, as long as I played during scheduled hours, I have enjoyed the MAG Beta. Does it suck that it the download is so hard to finish for some people? Yes. But is it worth it to keep at it until you can get in? YES.

Hey jizzy add some paragraphs to your wall there…

    • Timewarp says:

wow that sucks smellypirate. Did you turn off the PS3 at any point of the download or do anything else because that effects big downloads for some reason.

I’m annoyed as i could have got my hands on a uncharted 2 beta code had i gone to IGN.
