Ever wanted a case for your iPhone that would resist the end of the world without the annoying bulk armor plating? Of course you have. Enter this puppy from Otterbox. It’s the Defender and it’s one badass, lightweight mutha.
I own several “cases” for my iPhone, including the Power Slider and some generic piece of rubber that I bought the day I picked up my phone. What most of us seem to forget, however, is that carrying around an iPhone is like carrying around a $500 piece of glass. You drop that sucker and that screen is toast. I’m not trying to make you paranoid, but that drunk guy at the bar is about a beer away from sending his Pabst Blue Ribbon all over the countertop and your phone. And that would be tragic.
The Defender and I have been traveling for a couple of weeks now and I’m uber impressed. It’s like a bodyguard for my iPhone. It’s the Kevin Costner to my Whitney Houston.
The rubbery outer skin seals up tight making the case totally water-resistant on the outside, while this sort of hard plastic endoskeleton protects the phone from impacts and drops.
Normally you’d probably have to be willing to handle a whole lot of extra weight for this much protection, but the Defender weighs virtually nothing.
For an iPhone case, Otterbox’s Defender isn’t your entry level case, coming in at just under 50 bucks. But weigh that against the time and cost of repairing your iPhone because you were being too expressive talking with your hands again thus sending the device careening across Starbucks, and I’ve gotta say its a pretty good deal for peace of mind.
I’m calling this one a buy if you’ve got the bling. You might be out 50 bucks, but you’re really not going to have to worry about your phone anymore.

Looks kinda bulky..hm..though i do like the plastic parts that can pop up when you want them to. Whats the deal with the apple logo being open like that though? That is the main part that gets easily scratched.
Anyway, sad to hear that SGR isnt coming out this week, looking forward to it next week.
in my opinion this case makes the iPhone look like a plastic toy… and is the material of the otterbox really this tough? there are a lot of cases available much tougher than this one, e.g. carbon cases…

yeah yeah, i know.. it’s all a question of taste…
The Defender is one badass case to be sure, I have been using one for about two months. Unfotunately where I put the holster on my belt, the case tends to slip out of it when I get out of my truck at which point the iPhone in the Defender case drops about 3.5 feet to the ground. But, the fact that it has happened about 6 times before I switched back to a more secure holster is testimony in itself. Definitely an iPnoe saver, worth every doller.
dollar…whatever
