Fat Princess: A great game that needs work

There are only four possible reasons why anyone in the world is NOT playing Fat Princess right now. The first reason being you don’t own a PS3. In which case your probably unaware how incredible a large amount of the games available on the PSN are; Fat Princess in particular. Or maybe your painfully aware of that fact.

The second reason is that you have not purchased Fat Princess yet. It’s ok, you must have been kidnapped by aliens or undergoing brain surgery; your forgiven. Trust me, you will not regret coughing up $14.99 for this gem. What’s that? Your not going to buy it until your hear that Titan Studios has addressed some of the technical problems? Fair enough.

Which brings us to the third reason your not playing Fat Princess. The ongoing issues with the title cannot be denied, no matter how big a fanboy you are. I have yet to successfully join three random matches in a row myself, and I know others are having similar problems. However I have found it much easier to simply join games being played by people on my friends list (most of my friend’s list is playing it right now), and it is for that reason that I have not joined the “muck Fat Princess…it’s broken” bandwagon. I have been able to play over 15 hours of Fat Princess to date with friends, which has more than justified a $14.99 price tag and earned Titan Studios some patience on my part.

According to Titan Studios’ official blog, they are working on a host of fixes and tweaks; specifically things like the Scoring and Ranking Systems, the Server List, difficulty joining matches and Stalemate/Balance issues (looking at you Mage). They even have a new email address for people to send their “suggestions/complaints/praise/bug-reports” to.

According to Titan Studios a fix to help the lag some people are encountering is already in the testing phase. Basically they hope to make it easier to find and connect to the lowest available ping, rather than the semi-”hit or miss” setup being used right now. For myself, I have not had any real problem with lag once I actually connected to a match. Though I have heard enough complaints, specifically from my friends from across the pond, to consider it a big issue.

A patch to address connection problems is already on its way to Sony, who have their own testing process to go through before it can be released. On the blog Titan Studios said; “We have already tested this patch on our own client machines, and performance appears to be dramatically improved.” Which is great news! Making it easier to connect will go a hell of a long way towards shutting up all the haters. Seriously, how many games are released perfect these days honestly? The blog goes into a lot more detail about things like Hosting and Nat 3 for those who are interested.

Now, for those of you who pay attention, you may be wondering “what’s the fourth reason people are not playing Fat Princess?” Assuming you own a PS3, have an internet connection, $14.99 and a heartbeat, the only reason I can see is “gamer blindness.” These are the people knocking Fat Princess without even playing it. The people who say “it just does not interest me” or “eating cake is evil.” One can only assume these are the same weirdos who think Need for Speed is the greatest racing franchise ever or that ShadowRun was a great FPS. You know, blind people. I can’t really say anything to those people, because…well…I am not blind.

Fat Princess is hands down one of the best PSN games to date. It is worth every penny and will provide way more hours of solid gameplay than a lot of games rocking a $59.99 price tag. Is it being hurt badly by problems? You better believe it! However, this is a game that is so good, even its many problems can only slow its momentum. One can’t help but think Titan Studios was not prepared for just how popular this game would be.

I played it for 20 minutes this morning in single player mode to avoid any problems, and it was phenomenal. I am a complete noob when it comes to these kinds of games, and even I recognize it’s potential.
    Nice call pacman, idiots suck.

Yeah, I picked up this game and holy shit is getting into a match annoying. I’m glad they are fixing it. Seriously though, this game is fun and addicting… I just hope they fix the little issue with mage’s constant ability to continuall freeze (and piss off) people.

Excellent piece PacManPolarBear. You know a game is great when you have a list of complaints about it but still keep going back to play more.
