EA Applies for Dungeon Keeper Patents; Shanghai Six Reaction: SKREEEEE!

Man, they are gonna screw this up, aren't they?

Man, they are gonna screw this up, aren't they?

I’m going to avoid hyperventilating as I write this. You see, it’s the excitement.  It’s causing me to breathe too quickly and I could pass out and bang my head on the rnklja;nmavmkvmv..vf.fv..

WhaA?  Sorry bout that.  Anyway, before I pass out again, check this out.  One of EA’s patents for Dungeon Keeper!

That’s right, biz-nitches.  EA is going old school on that ass and finally resurrecting one of the first real games I played on a gaming computer.  At least, I hope so.

For those of you who weren’t born before its release (damnit, I’m old), Dungeon Keeper was a top-down dungeon building simulation where you were the evil overlord running the dungeon and attempting to keep heroes out.

Sound familiar?  It should, as just a few weeks ago, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman What Did I Do To Deserve This (Yes, That Is The Whole Sodding Name) came out as an exclusive PSP download with the same tongue-in-cheek concept of defending your dungeon from similar no-good-nicks.  Unlike Dungeon Keeper however, Badman made me want to cry and break my PSP all at the same time with the wasted potential for what could have been: see my review here.

Back to Dungeon Keeper. Bullfrog no longer exists, the game developer that developed Populous, Magic Carpet, Syndicate and spawned living hyperbole Peter Molyneux (God bless ya for shooting high, Pete).  Fortunately, Bullfrog was devoured by Electronic Arts, and hopefully Peter will not be too busy with Fable III or his man-boy love affair with Milo to stop by and make sure whoever is getting put in charge of the project doesn’t run it into the ground.

But there’s no more information out there.  Is this going to be a PC only release?  Of course not, PC gaming will be dead outside of MMORPGs and the occasional RTS by the time this opus releases.  Is this is going on the console then?  Release with the Playstation 4 or maybe as a direct download for the PSP Go Version 6 (they still will not have released a PSP 2).

And is this going to be a re-imaging and re-branding of the franchise, using a decade’s worth of gameplay innovations, or just take advantage of next generation graphics and physics engines?  Oooh…multiplayer?  Whatever happened to Netdragon’s acqusition of the rights to do a Dungeon Keeper 3 MMO?   Guess that went away, but wow, what a concept if it was done right!

As I am with just about anything anymore, I’m cautiously optimistic until I hear more.  Unless they’re coming out with a Dungeon Keeper cart racer or something, and then they can go sit on the business end of a sharp pointy stick.

I really do hope it is EA planning to release a new Dungeon Keeper game, because if it was them just renewing the trademark, and then ignoring the amount of attention the registration had would be just stupid, even from EA’s moneywise point of view.
