So I got home from work last night and all I wanted to do was play some Call of Duty 4 and shoot someone (in the game). I turned on the old Xbox and couldn’t connect. Oops, I forgot that XBL was down for maintenance.
Now that XBL is back, lets see what changed.
Nothing! XBL looks exactly the same. No new blades, graphics, colors… NOTHING!
Xbox.com got a face lift that includes 3 of your friends plus their avatars and the game they are playing on on your main page. Your recent games played, and the latest achievements from the last game you played are at the bottom of the page in case you forgot. Umm yay. There are some other small changes like Games played now has it’s own button at the top of the page and a few visual changes. Now my Internet isn’t screaming, but this made the pages load a lot slower. Check it out.
According to Microsoft, this was “regular maintenance” and preparation for Facebook and Twitter coming in the fall. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about XBL getting better and faster. I could really care less about Facebook and Twitter on my Xbox. I barely use Facebook anymore and I won’t allow twitter to cut into my game time.
I deem this down time unacceptable. Not letting me play online due to updates and maintenance, makes me want play my PS3 more. What are your thoughts?

I must agree. I know it’s only 24 hours, and we shouldn’t bitch about it, and it’s all to (supposidly) benefit us; but we’re paying for this service! – Yesterday was the first time i’d turned my ps3 on in weeks
Excuse my ignorance, just out of interest, does anyone know what they do over the 24 hours it’s down? It seems like if they’re just adding/changing bits of data it could be done in a few hours?
ya if they are not working on making the mainframe of live better or working to make it faster there is no reason to me that they should take it down. facebook, myspace and twitter all suck i hate them and refuse to use them. if i wanna talk to someone that bad ill meet them in real life or call them. and the ps3 comment reminds me that i need to go buy one sometime soon lol
Plus now on xbox.com it does not take you automatically the the Sign In page like it used to. So I hit my xbox.com button on my bookmark toolbar and then have to hit Sign In. Small complaint, but still ridiculous.
mabey most of the real improvments were things you wouldn’t notice, like new servers or security updates
For a service as dependable as XBL its amazing to watch everyone bitch when it goes down for 24 hours. MS has been telling everyone this was going to happen and has been planned since before E3. The last time it was down like this was last November. I realize we pay for this service and that people can be mad about it going down… if it went down all the time! Basically you all are just saying that you can’t take 1-2 days out of your year and find something else to do, sad.
@Eddiemilz According to Major Nelson the downtime was to implement new framework and get ready for the new free services that are coming this fall (Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm)

@Bhouse all i want is when they have downtime for it to actually positively affect online gaming and make live run smoother not just work on these new services that are coming later on. im guessing theres people out there like me who couldnt care less about facebook, etc.
It didn’t bother me in the slightest. I used that day to do more important things like game offline, and pick my nose.

This is the perfect time to break out a “it’s my blog and I’ll cry if I want to”, but I won’t. Only a douche would do that.
My beef with it is they took down XBL to update for crap I wasn’t excited about when I was at the Microsoft Presser and had nothing to do with what I turned on my Xbox to do. And I have to ask if they absolutly have to kill the Xbox servers to update xbox.com.
yeah happens with the PS3, they give you updates that do virtually nothing (though with the PS3 ounce you’ve downloaded the update you can carry on playing)
Mirosoft should at least now count the day you couldn’t get online as one of the day’s of your XBL subscription as it means your literally paying to NOT play XBL. Maybe microsoft will give everyone an extra day or maybe they’ll be scrooges and screw you out of a day either way i still think you pay for the type of service you get,
PSN is free therefore it is going to be second to XBL but the way i see it’s for people who just want to pay online and XBL is for people who want more with their online service.
I except this from PSN but not from XBL

it wasnt about waiting 24 hours it was about expecting something noticable and new after waiting a day. making us all wait for crap like that is annoying. everyone can do something else instead of xbox live but if your bored and youd rather play on a service your paying for then whats wrong with being a little bit pissed off
i don’t have a 360 but i argree that you do have a right to be pissed of when your paying for XBL.
