SG Review: Prototype

After enduring all the hype and drama, Prototype is finally here. Some people love it, some people hate it, and a bunch just like to compare it to inFAMOUS on their way to the land of ignorance. Like almost every big name title, the web is chalk full of commentary from gamers (and quasi-reviewers) who have not even played the game, let alone actually finished it.

At present I am about half way through my second play-through, and I have my own take on Prototype.

Check out the full review after the jump!

Prototype is what most comic book based video games wish they were, period. Which is funny since Prototype became a comic because of the game.

You play as Alex Mercer – voiced by Barry Pepper of Knockaround Guys - who wakes up in the city morgue. Alex discovers he has strange new powers, that the city has been quarantined because of an infectious outbreak and that he has no memory. A pretty basic plot device, but it works.

The city of Manhattan has been basically cut in half. One the one side you have the military, backed up by evil Special Forces and heartless Merc units. On the other you have the infected, who vary in form from your general zombie-like infected citizenry, all the way up to massive car chucking Hydra’s.

Manhattan is totally open from the start and a simplistic but easy to understand top down map shows the location of campaign and side missions, as well as the current location of military and infected hives.

Prototype is an open-world title, allowing you to complete side missions and activities, as well as unleash mayhem upon the entire city, in between completing the main campaign missions. The main plot points are told through a small number of decent cinematic sequences, though Barry Pepper’s superior voice work sounds out of place when compared to the phoned in dialogue from the rest of the cast.

I played and reviewed this game on the PS3, which currently has the highest Metacritic of score 84 out of the three Platforms (PC, Xbox 360 and PS3).

      Very important information,Fanboy :-)

Besides, i’m gonna play it on the 360 because its the only plattform with achievements :-)

      • Alejandro says:

you do know that achievements and trophies are exactly the same … right ‘fanboy’ … but trophies actually have value and identity while ‘G’ points mean nothing. Who cares anyhow – play the game and enjoy it.

    • Timewarp says:

actually there trophies for the PS3 version and wouldn’t it look too much look they were copying if sony could trophies, achievements?

Prototype looks awesome though i haven’t played it yet i plan on buying it soon.

i loved this game, i would love for some DLC or an co-op add on (imagine two alex mercers having a show down all over new york, EPIC MUCH!)

and you were right about the final boss pacman, there were so many ways to fight him, but i just used my fav moves over and over.

Feels like I just played the game, I was hoping you would have gone more into the inFAMOUS vs Prototype discussion since I know you played both. Anyways I saw some video of the gameplay and for some reason I wasn’t excited, I may pick it up.

Did you have any problems initially playing the disc, there were a lot of people that couldn’t play on the PS3. Did this get fixed?

No patch or anything like that has been released, but all you have to do is either add 700 mb of memory or remove 700 of memory (so simply delete data or install a new game), and you will be fine.

Where did the star ratings go???

    • ^ There are a boat load of similarities between inFAMOUS and Prototype, there really is. However, they are also REALLY different from one another in key ways. Prototype has guns, vehicles, it is much more focused on melee combat and is WAY more violent. inFAMOUS uses a real “climbing mechanic” whereas Prototype makes you super powered and you just run up everything. It’s not a matter of which is better, it’s about which you find appealing. I loved them both.

As to the PS3 install problem, as long as you can connect to the PSN there should be no problems. Just need a quick patch.

    • ^ Oops, sorry, patch is not out yet. But, like xWhit3XFeath3Rx said, there is a work-around. I had no problem at all myself.

    • Prototype says:

Ya know the devolpers still owe me a royality check

      • Timewarp says:

wow this guy loves the game! He even named himself prototype! Can i change my name to infamous? Or Uncharted?

    • Yamster says:

Ace review PMPB. Can’t wait to get my mitts on this.

I keep trying to decide between getting Prototype and Red Faction: Guerilla but every podcast/review that i listen to/read seems to have a different idea.
      Anyone have an opinion?

    • ^ Both if you can. If not, Prototype…then Red Faction later on.
