DotP is shipped along with 200 Gamerscore worth of achievements (if that’s your bag), and they’re by no means easy to attain. Obviously there’s your standard “Campaign Completion” and so forth, but some of the other achievements are a little more daunting. Dealing 20 damage to your opponent in one turn, for example, or reaching 60 life in a co-op game.
Duels Of The Planeswalkers is a great buy for only 800 MS Points. Your only other option for online M:TG is in fact, M:TG Online, which costs a LOT more in the long run as you have to buy the cards yourself. The online aspect seems stable, and the Campaign AI is highly skilled for the most part. This is a game that will keep you challenged, and the innate desire to learn each deck and unlock its full potential through unlockable additional cards keeps you coming back for more.
It is a great portal to the game for new and inexperienced players and is still thoroughly enjoyable to those of us who know the CCG inside and out (even despite its lack of true deck customisation). The game currently employs nearly 300 cards in its catalogue, and Wizards have assured the community that more expansion sets are coming.
I’d recommend this game firstly to anyone who has ever played M:TG. I’d then recommend it to anyone with a taste for strategy games, as you’ll enjoy it just as much as the rest of us. It’s easily worth the 800 points that XBLA are asking. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the trial, which allows you to play through the Tutorial AND the first two Campaign matches (Single-Player AND Co-Op), whilst allowing you to use the first two decks (Green and Red). If this review has sparked even the slightest pique of interest in you, you owe it to yourself to at least trial it.
In the meantime, I’ve got Planeswalkers to defeat!
