SG Review: Duels Of The Planeswalkers (XBLA)

DotP is shipped along with 200 Gamerscore worth of achievements (if that’s your bag), and they’re by no means easy to attain. Obviously there’s your standard “Campaign Completion” and so forth, but some of the other achievements are a little more daunting. Dealing 20 damage to your opponent in one turn, for example, or reaching 60 life in a co-op game.

Duels Of The Planeswalkers is a great buy for only 800 MS Points. Your only other option for online M:TG is in fact, M:TG Online, which costs a LOT more in the long run as you have to buy the cards yourself. The online aspect seems stable, and the Campaign AI is highly skilled for the most part. This is a game that will keep you challenged, and the innate desire to learn each deck and unlock its full potential through unlockable additional cards keeps you coming back for more.

It is a great portal to the game for new and inexperienced players and is still thoroughly enjoyable to those of us who know the CCG inside and out (even despite its lack of true deck customisation). The game currently employs nearly 300 cards in its catalogue, and Wizards have assured the community that more expansion sets are coming.

I’d recommend this game firstly to anyone who has ever played M:TG. I’d then recommend it to anyone with a taste for strategy games, as you’ll enjoy it just as much as the rest of us. It’s easily worth the 800 points that XBLA are asking. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the trial, which allows you to play through the Tutorial AND the first two Campaign matches (Single-Player AND Co-Op), whilst allowing you to use the first two decks (Green and Red). If this review has sparked even the slightest pique of interest in you, you owe it to yourself to at least trial it.

In the meantime, I’ve got Planeswalkers to defeat!

The games rules are much more like the rules of the upcoming M10 release, which has been received with mixed emotions.

The only thing I see missing from this is the fact that M:TG was the worlds FIRST CCG. It invented the genre of games, making it more important than Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, or any others that have came and went (or stayed.)

Everything else seems on the money with what else I have read.

And believe the man when he says the Tutorial will explain everything: Wizards of the Coast have always been able to condense the complicated rules down to something simple to understand. Making me wonder why they’re bothering to change the rules, but oh well.

Before I read, Krelith, I should mention… There is an option to change whether the computer automatically decides damage when there are multiple blockers.

It will make you very happy to change that option.

Agree with Steven. Its in the game options menu. For ten bucks, this game is a steal.

Also, I think it needs to be noted that playing this game on anything but a HD TV is somewhat hellish. The usual XBox problem of tiny fonts is especially true in a game where reading is a necessity.

Hot damn that’s a save! Thanks for the heads-up regarding Damage Auto-Assign guys, much appreciated!

Damn was I happy to see this pop up on XBLA. I was losing hope there’d ever be another digital version of Magic that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. Nice review too, Krelith, it covers what anyone would need to know nicely.

If anyone wants to play a game feel free to hit me up on Live. Gamertag is Rehykja.

I, like you have played Magic for a while. I have six decks but have no one to play with now, so this is my fix. It really is a great game but I don’t like the rules so much either.
