E3 2009 Hands-On: SplitFish FragFX V2

I hate gimmicks.  I also have a strong dislike for playing console first person shooters with traditional controllers.  That said, I went into my appointment to see the FragFX V2 with a healthy dose of hesitation.  Due to some interesting interpretations of our meeting schedule (which basically means Doc told me the wrong day for the appointment, but they worked us in anyway!)

Keep reading to find out what I thought of the gimmicky looking FragFX V2…

Since the guys were working me in between other scheduled appointments, I got taken to the “behind closed doors” area first, to see what’s coming down the pipeline and while I can’t really talk about what’s coming, they were set up with a FragFX V2 in that room as well and I got some quiet time with it (without the crowd of people behind me looking over my shoulder that you get on the showroom floor.)

Let me say this now… HOLY CRAP this thing is awesome!  I want to be clear, they didn’t give me one (or anything besides a press kit) in exchange for an endorsement.  I’m ordering on myself later this week.  If you prefer using a mouse for aiming in FPS games and you game on the PS3, you owe it to yourself to try this thing out.

Let me clue you in on some of the things you can’t figure out just from looking at the FragFX.  I mean looking at it, you get a pretty good idea what this thing does, but there are many things it does that you simply can’t tell.  We’ll start off simple… it allows you to assign auto-fire to buttons at variable rates.  The quote I was given by the current top COD4 leaderboard holder was “it pretty much makes any pistol a machine gun.”  Okay, I hear you saying “Cheater!!!”  He also said the top 50 or so players on the COD4 leaderboard for the PS3 all use the FragFX.  He followed that by saying “If they tell you they don’t, they’re lying…”

The FragFX hooks up to your PC for reprogramming.  You can tweak the thing to your liking and then upload your settings from your PC to the FragFX.  One thing I really found neat was the sensitivity options.  If you crank up the sensitivity in your game, you can really move around the screen quickly for aiming purposes, but you can also assign the Frag button (which is an analog button) to dial down sensitivity.  In effect, imagine your mouse moving you very quickly but as you reach your intended target, a slight pull of the Frag trigger slows down your aiming.  I literally watched someone accustomed to the FragFX pull off four headshots in a row in a fairly frantic game environment.

So whether or not using this in online competitive matches represents an unfair advantage, I want one of these for playing games through their single player campaign.  In my short time playing with the thing, I got quite comfortable with it.  I even saw one guy on the show room floor fully reclined, using his leg as a mouse pad (and he was kicking ass!)  The price for the FragFX V2 is $79.99 and is available at many retailers (including BestBuy.com).

I want to reiterate, I get/got nothing out of this… this is an unsolicited testmonial.  With all the guitars and drums around my house, the last thing I want is more controllers, but the FragFX V2 delivers.

There are limitless possibilities. If you are able to customize and reprogram on your PC, couldn’t you, in theory, build any control scheme you want for it, from face button actions down to how fluid and fast and sensitive the controls are! The Left Nunchuck-style movement stick (I don’t know what to call it) should’ve been available on the PC earlier. Beats moving on a keyboard. They took the best of both worlds: Mouse and customization from the PC, and the analog/triggers/face buttons from the PS3. I’d get that before a second controller.

Must say i agree with you fully on this. Its an awsome controller. My thoughts on this are here: http://www.thataussiegamesite.com.au/reviews/246-game-gadgets-fragfx-v2-review

I’ve had a ver. 1 FragFX for over a year now and it makes my FPS on console experience alot more enjoyable online. No I’m not awesome online but I can at least hold my own and or get some points.

The only option I don’t use as much is the Frag button on the fragchuck part. When it gets hectic I get twitchy. Overall it’s a great peripheral for the PS3.

I had the V1 as well, it was horrible. It got the job done for the little bit of time it worked, but then it died like many others when trying to do their firmware update. Took months of trying to get in touch before they would replace it, and took months more for the replacement to come.

When it finally came, it too was broken.

I finally found XIM and haven’t looked back since. It was originally made for Xbox 360 mouse support, but some people figured out how to make it work on PS3 and I’ve been using that since.

Only positive I see for Frag is it has a 6 axis and XIM doesn’t. XIM however lets you use any mouse/keyboard you want. I presently use a G15 and G5v2. xim360.com if you want to compare.

I bought the V1 last year and used it until some of the connections it wore out. It was a little tempermental. Some of the buttons were cheaply made. You had to do the firmware update to fix button bleed over. All and all I used it every time I played CoD, and it worked beautifully for that game.

I just got the V2 in the mail yesterday, and I am busy checking out the improvements. So far all I can say is that it is much much better. All of my problems with the first were addressed….so far. Maybe I’ll have my intended review up on the PS3 boards tonight.

I’ve gone through 2 Frags already but yes the mouse fell short of feeling sturdy. It does do the job indeed but I am curious how the V2 is like. They didn’t take too long for me to get my replacements and the customer service guy was cool. I did have problems updating since it only liked XP and not Vista but I just found some one with XP and did the tweaking there.

The XIM looks pretty sweet. I wish I had soldering skills but the last thing I remember soldering was the Afterburner for my GBA. XIM reminds me of the Smart Joy Frag for PS2 and Xbox.

I found that having the FragFX and the 60 gig PS3 I could play the FPS PS2 games alot better.

It would cool if they had a more user friendly peripheral for the 360 though.

The V2 I used at E3 worked very well, but clearly I only got to use it for a short period of time. It definitely felt well built.

They said they had manufacturer issues with the V1′s that have long since been sorted out.

During E3 they were supposed to display two new controllers that will be released this fall. The Dual SFX Frag Pro and Evolution. The Frag pro will be the successor to the FragFX. It will have a laser mouse instead of optical, so that should be an improvement.
