Lazy image re-use for consistency. And it's now Lazy Caption WEEK.

The pre-E3 flights of fancy continue and soar ever higher into the metaphorical sky that is the gaming blogosphere (must use this word less).

Yesterday I wrote up that Sony had vehemently denied that there were any plans to produce a slimline edition of the PlayStation 3. The thing is, some pictures have cropped up on some Chinese bulletin boards which might interest you, and might spook Sony if they’re credible.

See what I mean over the jump.

These shots from over at TheSixthAxis purport to show the packaging for a new slimline PS3 (as well as the plastic body shell), and frankly I’m not convinced.

First up, that logo. Ouch. Would the PS3 really need a logo redesign 3 years into its lifecycle? And even if it did, would it really get one that looks this cheap and tacky? Sony didn’t change the PS2’s logo when it went slimline, and I can see no reason for them to do the same with the PS3. Especially not if it’s gonna look that terrible.

And seriously. WHAT IS THIS. Matte-black plastic shell? On a PS3? Last time I checked, Sony bothered to put some effort into the design of their products so they’d look nice and appealing rather than, um, like this. This is debunkable based on the shoddiness of the whole thing alone!

Besides, Sony have already stepped out and – tah-dah – denied that this is anything to do with them. The PopStation and PolyStation 3 spring to mind. Nice try, fellas. But if you’re going to generate some chatter, at least make it look good!

      Ok now it’s a $600 paper weight.

      Or however much it costs in the US now.

    • Timewarp says:

      paperweight is a bit undermining for the PS3, it’s more of a device of which nobody has realised it’s potential. There’s so much sony could do to take advantage of the PS3’s power but at the moment their not doing much about it.

      That box is awfully damning evidence. I hope that is fake. It’s really ugly.

      If it is real I hope it’s a lower tier bargain model. The PS3 is a beautiful machine. That looks like it was scorched in a fire.

      I must admit, that “redesign” of the PS3 looks pretty damn hideous. Lets hope those pic are false.

      @timewarp

      I was talking about how it just appear in general.
      It’s stuffed full with a lot of cool stuff, but that design looks blank (terrible).

      Thus it’s a paper weight, and nobody would buy it.
