legacylocker

While not specifically gaming related I stumbled across this website today that I thought a lot of us, who travel in heavy internet circles, could relate to.  It’s a website called Legacy Locker and essentially, its a place for you to store all of your digital property keys in case you step out in front of a bus on your way home this afternoon and spend the evening, and eternity, playing the harp with Jimi Hendrix on a cloud.  While not comfortable to think about, this is definitely something I plan to use.

So what if you and Jimi are jammin on that cloud, you know, totally impromptu.  You’re about half way through the third verse of amazing grace (Jimi is really jammin) and then it dawns on you.  Your wife or mom or friends have no way of using your Twitter account with a valuable 50k followers, or they can’t get access to take control of your huge portfolio of kickass domain names that are about to expire.  Oh crud!  You changed youPr aypal password and never told them how to get in there and pull out the 20 grand you were saving from your ebay sales.  Speaking of Ebay!  You have a 100% positive rating with thousands of transactions!  It’s all going to waste!

Most families aren’t going to jump through a bunch of hoops for every single account you had online, but this Legacy Locker thing seems to fill a very serious need in today’s digital society.  We don’t just own STUFF anymore that you can hold in your hand.  A lot of what we have, and will leave to our heirs, is going to be digital, especially as time goes on and we all move more and more of our time and attention to the virtual world.

I googled a little bit and there were some similar services out there but nothing that seems as all encompassing as this Legacy Locker deal.  For 30 bucks, you get a year of service which also includes unlimited Legacy letters, so you can tell your neighbor what a douche he is and not have to worry about him siphoning the gas out of your tank.

The verification process they use when you DO kick the bucket seems pretty rigorous, and I’m inclined to do this.  After all, if I’m jamming on a cloud with Jimi, the last thing I want to worry about is whether I paid the website hosting bill for June.

Hmmm, I guess it would be useful, $30 a year is pretty good, but is there really a difference between this and just having it all saved on a word document? Stuff like ebay only need a few things to sign up.

If it didn’t exist already, you could have trademarked the praypal typo.

Hopefully, as the world advances into a digital age and all you tech savvy Gen Y dudes start to di… fade away, more and more companies will offer these services. And then the insurance companies will latch on to this too. So will a openID esque technology that requires 1 user and pass for EVERYTHING on the planet. Oh the list will go on. But LegacyLocker is definetly a step in the right direction.

P.S. I wanna jam with george harrison.
