According to a press release from this morning, it looks like Jerry Bruckheimer is breaking into the gaming business. At least I’m pretty sure he is. I was able to deduce with a fair amount of certainty from their press release that Jerry Bruckheimer Games Studio has something to do with games and Jerry Bruckheimer. Never let it be said that Sarcastic Gamer doesn’t get to the bottom of things. What does the formation of this new company mean? I mean besides the desire to make MOAR MONEY…
My guess(es) after the jump…
Look, I should get this out of the way before I go any further… I’m a fairly easily entertained guy when it comes to movies. I know a lot of folks have issues with Jerry Bruckheimer’s collective work. I don’t. Sure, if you look at his list of the projects he’s worked on, there are some stinkers in there, but there’s a metric buttload of great (usually action-based) entertainment in there too! While I’m not exactly sure what an “executive producer” does, he’s executively-produced some of my favorite movies and if he thinks he can take a stab at steering gaming projects the same way he’s steered film projects… I’ll hold off on the pitchforks and torches (for now.)
As much as I’m unclear what an executive producer does, I do know some of the stuff they don’t do and that means he’s going to have to surround himself with talented people. As much as I didn’t personally care for Halo, it’s an undeniable juggernaut of success. One of the people Bruckheimer has tapped to help him with his humbly named new company is Jim Veevaert (whose name sounds like some kindergarten art project where kids paint on paper towels.) Veevart produced the Halo franchise on the 360 for Microsoft Games. Sounds like a solid guy to seed your company with. The other man tapped is Jay Cohen, formerly of Ubisoft.
As much as Jerry Bruckheimer himself won’t be working on games, Veevaert and Cohen won’t either, but they’ll help decide what projects to work on and pick the teams to work on those projects. One would assume that eventually down this chain of command, someone, somewhere will actually touch a keyboard that writes code to eventually become a video game. Although it’s entirely possible Jerry Bruckheimer Games Studio is a shell of a company used to launder money in what will ultimately be an explosion laden, funny quip delivering Will Smith action movie… but I’d bet not.
Don’t forget… Jerry Bruckheimer knows a thing or two about gaming. He’s mid-production on Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia movie right now. That practically makes him an expert, right? I kid, I kid…but not really. I have to say though, I love the apt use of the term “explosive ideas” by MTV’s Van Toffler when describing what he sees Bruckheimer’s studio doing. Oh yeah, I didn’t mention they’re partnering with MTV yet, did I? It’s a sure sign of success if you ask me. (For those of you that are sarcastically impaired, that was the obligatory BLATANT SARCASM™ to meet my quota for this article.)
I mean sure, MTV Games has Harmonix, but that’s such a niche product you can’t really claim MTV Games is at the top of the food chain based on that alone. Unless Jerry Bruckheimer wants to work on an explosion-based music game. Maybe he’ll release the first Rock Band sequel with its own propane powered pyro kit? Imagine rocking out with 8 foot flames shooting up in the air on both sides of you in your own living room. Ok, that would rule!
Since this company was just formed, doesn’t have developers or projects yet, you can bet it’ll be years before they actually release anything. What does that really mean to us today? Isn’t it obvious? It’s a slow news day! LOL
