How to share media from your Mac to an Xbox 360 (or PS3)

rivetUp until now, my Xbox 360 has been completely ignoring my iMac.  It acts like it doesn’t exist which hurt the iMac’s feelings.   All it wants to do is share its videos, music, and photos with the rest of the house, but the 360 just refuses to acknowledge anything that doesn’t run Windows Media Center.  What I really needed was a disguise, a way to dress my mac up like a PC to make my 360 believe it was talking to a fellow Microsoft product.

Just the other day, I finally stumbled upon just such a disguise.  A piece of software that lets me not only share everything on my mac with my Xbox, but also works with my shiny new Ps3 as well.

It’s called Rivet.

Rivet lets you share all manner of music, videos, and photos to your Xbox 360 or PS3 by sort of imitating a media center on your Mac.  Unlike other programs I’ve tried, like Connect 360, Rivet lets me share these things from a variety of locations on my computer and can serve both the 360 and the PS3 simultaneously.

There’s nothing to launch, as Rivet seems to just live up in the menu bar along the top, waiting to be needed.  Once the program is running on your Mac, your Xbox and Ps3 will both SEE IT as a legitimate source of video and you can browse and play till your heart’s content.

You can try the software free and buying it will be one of the best non-game uses for $18.95 that you’ve spent in a while.

    • Most DLNA servers can do this. I think (and could be wrong) Rivet is the first decent program to do this for free? There are several free ones on the Windows/Linux side of things.

I can’t watch to watch the mysteries unfold… All the things Doc didn’t know about the PS3, but learns now that he owns one himself.

Also http://www.nullriver.com/products/connect360 has been around for a long time to do this exact same thing.

Wow, so that’s their logo, huh? Wouldn’t be doin’ my job if I didn’t wonder why they chose an unborn baby’s view of Daddy’s drunken indiscretion during the third trimester.

Awesome tech, though. About time the fruit lovers got some console compatible love.

@Lomahongva I HAVE tried COnnect 360 but at the time it wasn’t feature-rich enough for me to drop the dough. With this one being PS3 and 360 friendly, it was a no-brainer. Works great.

You may want to add it only works for Leopard (10.5). There are some people who still only have Tiger… :(

would it work with music purchased on itunes? i have tried a variety of things, but can only get my movies to work, so getting music and pictures would be nice too.

Sorry guys, I’m a n00b. Assuming I have a capture card, would I be able to record game-play using this app with my mac?

    • OMG says:

@Farko: According to Rivet’s site, you can share music. It also says you can “stream movies,” but I’m not sure if that means through a game console or not. I would assume so.

@RazzLee: No, this app is for file-sharing between systems. If you have a capture card, you would plug your PS3/360 directly into the capture card to record game play.

I just bought it you can add files to be looked for on your 360/PS3 (I have 360) and it’s not Itunes based so you should be able to play any music. I have not tested it though. You can watch videos on it and a lot of formats are supported. The AVI support was what sold me.
