Guinness Records Honors ‘Fuel’

To paraphrase one of my favorite Metallica songs of all time, “Give me fuel, give me fire, give me [5,560 square miles of open-world racing exploration in a post-apocalyptic wasteland in high-def graphics].” I know, it’s catchy.

This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about Fuel on Sarcastic Gamer, but on Saturday Shacknews reported that the folks at Guinness World Records plans to honor Codemasters’ upcoming title Fuel with the honor of “Biggest Console Game of All Time,” as a result of it’s previously-mentioned 5,560 miles2 (about 8948km2) of explorable game space.

Oh, and there are some rumors about the release date as well, but we’ll discuss all that after the jump.

In order for a record to be set, typically the person/group making the claim that they have/will set a world record needs to apply and have an official GWR judge as a witness. I don’t know the circumstances behind this specific award, and knowing that Codemasters’ might have applied for the honor might take a little bit of the “Awesome factor” away, but not much.

There aren’t a lot of records out there for video games (that I’m aware of, but I didn’t go to my local library to look at the official overpriced book and the website doesn’t have a complete list of records). I doubt it will give other companies a lot of motivation to try and break the record, but I’d love to see Bethesda give it a shot.

For the other news, UK site VG247 claims that the release date for Fuel has been pushed back to June 5th, instead of May 26th. Releasing on a Friday seems a little odd, as most games have a Tuesday release date, and it’s still unclear whether that date is for the UK alone or for worldwide sales, but my own opinion is that if it’s delayed in one country, it will be delayed elsewhere as well. One advantage is that it gives the game a weekend release, still before Prototype but after Red Faction: Guerilla and…um…Sims 3.

      Friday is the traditional release date for games in the UK, so since its a uk site you got that date from its not unusual

      Interesting bit of marketing strategy, getting Guiness to recognize this game may bring more publicity to it than it normally would have received. We’ll have to see if it works, but it certainly can’t hurt sales for the game.

      Guinness World Records – Gamer Edition.
      Picked up this fine specimen at The Gathering ‘09 at around 30 bucks.
      It’s size is lesser than of the original books, but is’s frikkin compressed some places.

      @Dez – Maybe it is just in the UK then
      @Paradigm13 – agreed :)
      @Cheap – Awesome, I didn’t even know that existed.

      Just as an update, in case anyone else noticed, my math was apparently wrong. 5,560 sq miles is actually equal to 14,400 sq kilometers. Regua pointed this out in the forums and I verified on the UK version of the Fuel site.
