Redacting=Giant black blocks
It was a busy news week, so I figured I’d come into the Sarcastic Gamer compound on the weekend to get this out there; you know, get caught up on work.
Respected video game designer and director David Jaffe, director of both God of War and Twisted Metal Black, posted a teaser email on his blog site last week to show he was working on another game. He tried to be slick by blurring over some of the words, but he should have redacted them, because photoshop ninjas were able to unblur to the point where the the email could be read.
What does it say? Follow me into the jump to find out!
Turns out that some of the blurred words read “dragging him behind your car” and “when he is launched out of a car”. And whoever is being launched out of a car, the email appears to go on to say that they’ll “crawl frantically” and try to dodge “approaching cars, trying to get away.”
So the game involves cars.
The blog post was removed, but the damage had been done. Putting two and two together, it would be safe to presume that Jaffe is working on the next-gen version of the Twisted Metal series. Joystiq mentioned in their article that before the blog post was pulled, Jaffe talked about a big milestone at the end of the month, and it goes to figure that Jaffe plans on making the announcement of whatever his car based game is at E3.
Personally, I’m excited. Twisted Metal Black was one of the only games I tag teamed with my two best friends and went through every single storyline of each and every driver so we could see how their stories all played out. The gameplay was nothing to write home about, but the backstories for the drivers were brutally dark and incredibly well done.
Still makes me smile, and they still are pretty good considering some of the slop being put out on the market these days and passing for cutscenes.
Anyway, spoiler alert. Thanks to the glory of Youtube, here’s the intro, middle and end sequence for the driver Sweettooth from Twisted Metal: Black, all rolled up together. Watch this clip, then realize that each and every one of the 10+ drivers had a story line as compelling, diversified and flippin’ insane as that one did.

Man, that is a tasty treat.
So the idea that Jaffe might be making another one of these, and given his success with the God of War series, it sounds like he plans on having the drivers get out of their cars. So a open sandbox environment with a Twisted Metal flavor? How in the hell is that going to work?
Well, I don’t know; I’m not sure that I want to be controlling Mr. Grimm off of his motorcycle or Sweettooth without the ice cream truck. Will they be getting guns? Multiplayer? Co-op? The possibilities seem endless. But what if I just liked Twisted Metal for being the car smash-em-up it was? I guess we’ll see…
…but god damn, they need to bring back whoever wrote the storylines for Twisted Metal: Black, and I’ll go buy a PS3 for it.
