It’s getting close to that special time of year again. No, I’m not talking about the holiday season, I’m talking about Convention Season! GDC has already been and gone with a few surprises delivered to us as gamers. Next on the cards is the almighty Electronic Entertainment Expo, known to we privileged few (million), as E3.
I don’t know about all of you, but I’m excited to see what these industry figureheads have planned for us at the prestigious event. So with anticipation building steeply within my warped little mind, I’ve compiled a few predictions of my own (and a couple from Rothbart), to discuss. All will be revealed (in a predictive way), after the jump.
Firstly, let’s get the most obvious of the big announcements out of the way!
The PSP Go! has already exclaimed its way across the interwebs, and is sure to be officially unveiled by Sony during their press conference. Based on the scattered information revealed (be it inadvertently), thus far, I honestly don’t know where I stand on this product.
On the one hand, it’s a sure sign that Sony are finally doing away with the power draining (and noisy), UMD drive. In its place will be a hefty amount of internal storage space allowing for digital downloads of all forthcoming titles as well as a wide variety of previous ones. This is good, right? Isn’t this what we wanted from the PSP all along?
Not I. This is what I want from the PSP2! Add on a second analog nub and a second row of shoulder buttons and I’d be sold on this product. But that’s not what we’re getting here. According to the bits of information released thus far it’s simply a PSP with a sliding screen and no UMD.
I’ve got SD cards that I can use for downloading games on a launch PSP, so all I’m really gaining from this SKU is a sliding screen… It suffices to say I’m not standing behind this idea. Unless the PSP Go! has some SERIOUS differences that make it worth throwing my launch PSP into the nearest bin, I’ll have no reason whatsoever to support it. Once again, this is entirely speculation at this point. I truly hope that this SKU has something more to offer, but I’m not holding my breath.
The Sony press conference will also undoubtedly be showing footage of upcoming Insomniac title, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, as well as Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2 and of course, the creme de la creme of their video showcase will be the hugely anticipated God of War 3. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some more of Heavy Rain either.
Microsoft will undoubtedly be showing footage from Halo 3: ODST, and it really wouldn’t surprise me if they convince Activision to preview Modern Warfare 2 as part of their holiday line up. I’m personally looking forward to a preview (and possibly playable version) of Blood Bowl as well.
New Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles are sure to be announced as well, further fuelling the burning rage within me that invokes hysteria at the mere mention of games that should really be released as DLC.
Expect OnLive to be marking their territory, I’m thinking they’ll be showcasing more playable games using their service. And who’d really be surprised if they took the opportunity to announce further support from publishers missing from their list at GDC. Activision, perhaps?
Transfer your attention to Page 2 for my predictions based on virtually no evidence at all, and exist simply because I HOPE they’ll occur! Oh, and I’ll be analysing some of Rothbart’s predictions too!
