Okay, maybe not...find out what it really is after the jump
I may not be a marketing expert, but I do have a degree on the subject. Hideo Kojima’s stunt this week left many Konami fans feeling underwhelmed, disappointed, and a little angry. Sort of like the morning after a night of binge drinking in Vegas when you wake up and find out that the Pauly Perrette you thought you brought back to your room was really a Rosie O’Donnell. Ouch.
There is a silver lining on the cloud however—some companies actually know how to leak information at the correct rate in order to keep their fans happy and hyped about their games.
Remember the awesome Heavy Rain (which sounds like a feminine hygiene product) footage that has been floating around the ‘nets for a few months? This week, we got gameplay footage and, courtesy of Kotaku, I’m sharing it here.
So did the header image psyche you out? Ha ha, cooking sim. Right. Heavy Rain, based on the footage, actually appears to be a mystery adventure game. One of the reasons graphics are so fluid (aside from the processing power of the PS3), is that the action sequences seem to be completely pre-rendered, driven by those button-timing mini-games that we’ve come to love: quick time events.
Given the game style, this could be forgiven. I would be surprised if the game didn’t have some limited shooting and free-action, perhaps something along the lines of Mirror’s Edge but without all the Super Ninja Girl antics. Oh, and Microsoft’s vision of people hallucinating icons seems to have already come true for the game’s protagonist, once he dons his Blues Brothers-esque shades.
Overall impressions? I’m a member of the Wait’n’see tribe on this one. I was highly psyched for this game before this footage, but now I’m wondering just how Quantic Dream is going to pull this off without becoming repetitive and annoying. However, the amazing graphics and the prospect of a new mystery adventure continue to keep me optimistic, and I’m curious to see how the clue mechanics work. What do the rest of you think?

“how Quantic Dream is going to pull this off without becoming repetitive and annoying.”
OldMarriedGamer, have you played Fahranheit or Indigo Prophecy? I’m sure you have. Well remember them! It’s core gameplay ought to be like that and I honestly loved the game.
I’m Waisybabu by the way
sick….poor token black character…..i guess they’ll have to keep the token foreign character alive to keep the game from looking racist. This looks awesome! I might consider buying heavy rain when it comes out from the looks of this gameplay
Despite people kicking and screaming about QTE, I personally loved “Space Ace” and “Dragons Lair” as a kid. Couldn’t play them to save my life; hell, they scared the crap out of me.
When I got old enough to figure them out, I had a great time, and Don Bluth’s wacky Nyquil-dream art was enough to keep me going through all of them.
I might be able to get my wife into this one. Hmmm…even she can do “Simon Says”.
Oh, and yeah, I loved Indigo Prophecy until the last third…
“Wait’n’see tribe”
Am I sensing a Scrubs reference here? or is that just a coincidence?
Anyway, I didn’t think the graphics was all that great in the newest footage, not as amazing as the initial footage which have been floating around.
Granted, it is in alpha, and they are still working on it, but I seriously hope for some better facial animations! Though the “hud” and rain/atmosphere part looked awesome!
I am looking forward to it, not sure it’s my type of game, but I’ll sure keep attention on this one…
Ahh, finally, something new from the guys who made Omikron; can’t wait!
I’m probably going to get it if the story is good. It may just be one of those that should be played for the experience.
indigo Prophecy / fahrenheit is not the only game with quicktime events, god of war, and a few quantum of solace fighting scene’s are right up there with these type of game mechanics
QUICKTIMEFEST! I pass.
Hit X not to di..

I’m not sure I like the idea of the entire game being quick-time events, but the game intrigues me enough that I’m willing to give it a chance. I’m not going to start judging it before it hits consumers shelves.
