BSkyB Could Be The New Netflix (In The UK At Least)

This coming Friday is an important day for the UK. Firstly because inFAMOUS is being released, and secondly because Microsoft are holding a press conference over here and rumour has it that their long-awaited partnership with BSkyB will finally see fruition.

Not sure what I’m on about? Read on to see why this is big news!

Leaving my inevitable run to the nearest retail store upon finishing work aside, this is going to be an interesting part of my day. We all know how popular Netflix has become with the American XBL members, and it would be nice to finally see something similar outside of Microsoft’s homeland.

BSkyB (aka “Sky”), are the premier digital TV service in the UK and have more exclusive sports and movies access than you can shake your proverbial stick at. So if they were to set this up as an “On-Demand” service I can only imagine the results would be heavily positive, both in financial terms for MS and Sky, and in entertainment terms for the public.

This is entirely speculative at this point, but I’ll be keeping an eye on the story and will post an update on Friday once the official story has broken (assuming I can pull myself away from inFAMOUS for any reasonable amount of time!).

What do you folks think? Can you see MS and Sky bringing TV to your 360?

      OOooo MASSIVE news

I’m a HD subscriber but not the movies… what’s the betting you need to have the full movie package to take advantage or something…

Sky won’t do anything unless they can make a mint out of it.

That said, i’d prefer them over most other companies to do it.

I’d love a netflix type service over in the UK! I’m a sky subscriber, but their ‘on-demand’ stuff is rubbish!

      This would be nice!

@contagiousmind at least you guys get HD channels. I’m on Virgin Media and while I love everything else, their HD support is appalling. Guess how many HD channels we have? One. ONE. It’s BBC HD, and guess what? It only comes on after flippin 6pm or something stupid, and then it’s just the Antiques Road Show. I’ll be hitting the road and heading to Uni in September, so if the price is reasonable (as I’m expecting it to be a paid service) then I might just get myself all signed up. Save me paying for a TV Licence. :)
