After spending nearly an entire day in various cities and airports, I have finally returned home. As you might have noticed, I have been absent from the site recently. For the past two weeks, I have been touring the Mediterranean. Italy, Greece and Turkey, to be precise. I had some delicious food and gaped at some historic sights, including the Colosseum, Cellini’s Perseus, Michelangelo’s David, the Sistine Chapel and the Parthenon. Each an awe-inspiring monument.
The first stop on my journey, Venice, will actually be a setting in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 2. See how these two tie together over the jump.
Based on some new and old screens, it seems that the virtual city will be eerily similar to the real thing. For instance, two famous Venice sights, the Basilica of San Marco (Saint Mark) and the Piazza San Marco clock tower, appeared in an image first uploaded onto N4G. The screen, and the others in the gallery, have since been removed, but the Giant Bomb chaps managed to grab the screens before they were wiped from the Internet. I have posted the aforementioned photo below, along with some pictures I took during my time in Venice.
Game Informer’s May cover story first revealed that the Basilica would be in the highly anticipated sequel, as well as the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto). The seventh and eighth images above are of the Grand Canal, while the ninth one shows the Rialto Bridge. I apologize for the banner pic in the gallery, but I am simply too stupid to wrap my head around this complicated WordPress technology. On the bright side, you get to view my hilarious image twice. Enjoy.
The original Assassin’s Creed was a pretty big disappointment, mainly due to the dull and repetitious missions, but the visuals were absolutely spectacular. I almost shat my pants when Damascus came into full view. It is nice to see that Ubisoft is actually re-creating some notable Venice locales in Ezio’s quest for vengeance, as opposed to just programming some random buildings and a few waterways. Games don’t need to be authentic to be fun, but I always appreciate when a studio goes the extra mile to create an immersive experience.

Looks awesome, although I can’t help but think the glider like thing he’s using is kind of a lame.
Have any other areas been confirmed? I’m assuming it’s not all set in Venice.
Yeah agree with gareth, the glider looks lame. Now that will break the immersiveness. I somehow doubt that there were many people flying about above the streets of Venice in whatever century the game’s set in. From those screens, the game looks very nice. Venice is a lovely place in real life, and it looks (just from these few screens) like they’ve really captured the look and feel of the place. I’m really looking forward to see how this game turns out.
