Would you kindly sneak a peek at the sequel to 2007’s corking submerged shooter after the jump? Of course you would, both because you’re powerless to resist our firm mental nudging, but also because you were a big fan of the original BioShock and you really cannot wait to see its successor in action.
I sent out an email today asking what the Sarcastic Gamer staff thought of the trailer and here are the responses I got:
Eoco: “Well, there you go. BioShock 2 gameplay footage. It certainly hasn’t lost any of the original’s atmosphere or general eeriness, but it doesn’t see to have changed a lot either. The HUD looks near identical, as does the appropriately art-deco setting, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…right? BioShock is a franchise now, and a successful one at that, but with Ken Levine not involved, it’s possible that 2K are pushing out a quick cash in. That said, it’s hard to pass judgement on a game having only seen two minutes of footage (and that drill looks mighty fine), but you’ve got to admit it bears a striking likeness to its predecessor. Hopefully the full release has a few new ideas.”
Rothbart: “I feel like I was the one guy that didn’t get hooked by Bioshock and Bioshock 2 looks like more of the same… well, not exactly the same, but “same enough” for me to know I’m going to pass on it and not miss anything. For the folks that loved the game, it looks like they’re in for a treat, but I’ll be spending my time elsewhere.”
Dave: “It’s more of the same, with a big ass drill. I can’t wait to freeze splicers and hit them with it. Since drowning is no longer an issue, under water combat seems possible and enticing, though hopefully [Minor spoiler alert - Ed.] the Big Sister can give us a better final boss battle than the previous BioShock.”
Havok: “I will admit that I was a bit apprehensive about the idea of a “Big Sister,” but after seeing the first gameplay video, my fears have been quelled. The lightning-quick antagonist looks to present quite the challenge, and she actually looks damn cool. My only problem with the first game was the final boss fight, so I don’t mind that the sequel looks very similar to its predecessor. As long as 2K Marin crafts a good story, I will likely pick it up. Plus, someone needs to teach that needle-armed wench a lesson.”
Frawlz: “This game looks kick ass! Story line aside, the fighting still looks fast paced – much faster than I expected a big daddy to move. This will be a definite buy. Plus, did anyone notice how the water looked so much more realer in this one?”
Animathias: “When I heard you would be playing as a Big Daddy, I was worried the game would feel slow and your weapons would be limited. Thankfully, the trailer put those thoughts to rest. It looked fast, frantic and, most importantly, fun. I imagine the story will have some answers as to why you move around so quickly, but don’t forget that the Big Daddies from the first one were amazingly agile in bursts. I can’t wait to get my hands on this.”
Captain DDL: “The video looks great, and playing as a Big Daddy looks pretty cool. I can’t wait.”
Doc: “Meh. I am sure the game will be as awesome as the first one was, but I kept telling whoever was providing this gameplay control to hurry the hell up. Seems like the guy moved too slow and, while the environments looked amazing, I was a little bored with it. Not bad… but not all THAT.”
Yamster: “Dude, I’m outside in a garden.”
Forget us, though! What did you think of the trailer? Sound off in the comments.

I always thought that the limitations put on you fighting the normal Big Daddy’s were what made them suspenseful fights most times you encountered them until nearer towards the end. Now we seem to have Hitomi the ninja Mommy and well…
I played Bioshock and truly, Truly enjoyed it nonstop until after the last part with Andrew Ryan. After that it went downhill a bit, but nonetheless it is about the story for me and never was about the combat. So, all in all I’ve not been sold at all on this one.
There’s no doubt that some people are going to ignore some of the faults and buy it simply because it’s bioshock.
I’m a bit worried about what you said about them wanting to cash in on a sequel though.
Otherwise it looks pretty damn fun.
I must be honest I loved the first BioShock but although this one seems similar I have a feeling that it will be quiet different.
They will probably have some new plasmids and stuff but for me it’s too early to tell much about the game.
I am curious about the story and how it will work when it will be set in the BioShock timeline. Like will you actually witness Frank Fontaine take over and whatnot or will it be set just before the original? So many questions and so few answers but overall I’m excited.
I agree completely with what Doc and Dave said. The person playing was ridiculously slow. They had to completely stop to turn around! And the water aspect could change the game if done right, especially if you had to cross the ocean floor to get to another part of Rapture.
But one awesome part, though, is when the glass breaks, and it has that brief slow-motion part.
@Matt:
It says on Wikipedia that it’s set 10 years AFTER the original.
Also, to everyone else it says that you play the FIRST big daddy created
and that his weapons will overheat if you use them too much.
With the first Bioshock, it was in no way a bad game. I just felt I was missing something huge that everyone found brilliant. I’m hoping it won’t be the same with this second game as I will probably buy it at some point. I would say it definately not a game I’d get on release.
My curiosity is piqued for Bioshock2. Playing as Big Daddy will definitely be interesting considering the mobility but should be fun nonetheless. Hopefully this version will warrant playing the game more than once.
I wonder if they’ll develop a BioShock 3 where they’ll introduce Big Baby Momma, because you know she’ll be the angriest character of all!
Did anyone notice that the Big Daddy fighting the Splicers is protecting a Little Sister who is collecting ADAM? I completely missed that the first couple of times I watched the video.
@ Harlequin
Yes, Big Baby Momma’s with the Hitomi Ninja Mommy’s. We might have something here.
wheres the BOOM BOOM of the big daddys feet?
For this commenting on speed: if you used hypnotize big daddy in the first game you found that the big daddy’s actually could keep up with you and moved very fast. I think the speed in this game was the player purposfully slowing down to seem more ciniamatic.
