The idea of blending two separate universes together to sell a game is nothing new. Sometimes blended things are just better. Smores anyone? Usually it involves a fighting game; some of which were great like Marvel vs. Capcom on the Dreamcast, and some were an insult to fans on both sides like Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe on the PS3 & Xbox 360 (most pathetic finishing moves ever!).

Of course not every crossover game is a fighter, and two of the industries best development studios are coming together to give their fans a third-person action game the likes of which the world has never seen.

With Ninja Theory working on their followup to Heavenly Sword and SCEA getting ready to unleash God of War III, the last thing anyone expected was for them to announce today that the two would be joining forces to create a game loosely slated for a late 2012 release.

In a joint press conference held earlier this morning, a spokesman from SCEA, speaking on behalf of Ninja Theory as well, dropped the first details about the new game, codenamed Holy Blades.

More than a simple collaboration on a new IP, Holy Blades will be a true crossover between God of War and Heavenly Sword. Yep, that’s right, you heard me, Kratos and a yet to be named uber babe with a big sword will come together to kick ass and take names.

Which immediately begs the question; will there be co-op? The answer is yes. Kratos and his female better half will both be available for single or co-op play during the single player campaign. They will alternate who hits square or triangle for the big battles etc, however no word yet on how some of the Heavenly Sword style six-axis control will play out in co-op.

SCEA made a point of confirming that Holy Blades WILL have a sex mini-game, just like always. However, word that the mini-game might actually take place between the two lead characters raised a few eyebrows, as did the allusion to a “sexy, romantic encounter” that will appeal more to female gamers. Apparently getting rescued by a blood covered, tattooed, bald maniac with a huge scimitar is not “romantic.” Chicks, go figure.

Both GoW and HS have special weapons and combo’s galore, and Holy Sword will apparently take them to a whole new level of bloody awesome! Not only will there be new weapons and combos, along with some classic ones, players will also be able to complete complex combo’s together in co-op, for maximum ass-kickery.

2012 seems a long time to wait, but given how awesome this game sounds already, I have no doubt the wait will be worth it.

Of course, since this is all make believe, it won’t matter how long you all wait, it will never happen. It would be freaking cool though wouldn’t it? Especially if they could somehow bring Nariko back, she was hot as all hell. Her and Kratos would make a cute, yet still bloodthirsty, couple.
